The Smelly Cheesecake Cafe - Matcha cheesecake + iced matcha latte = the perfect "matcha"!

Smelly Cheesecake Cafe, I love you so "matcha"!…read more Sydney seems to be having a love affair with matcha as big names such as Café Cre Asion and Chanoma Cafe are topping the lists of must-visit places. Trendy, it is. Healthy, it is also! Matcha is known to be a superfood that is rich in nutrients and antioxidants, improves energy and increases energy levels to name a few benefits. Riding on this wave is The Smelly Cheesecake Cafe with some inspired matcha dishes, namely the matcha cheesecake which was absolutely phenomenal. The top layer of matcha was fluffy, added a pop of pale green color to an otherwise traditionally monochromatic dessert and the flavor was quite subtle but definitely noticeable. The bottom cheesecake was decadent, added a bit of tang and was supremely smooth and creamy. The matcha layer made up about 80% of the dessert while the actual cheesecake layer made up about 20% which may seem like a huge discrepancy but eaten together, it was the perfect concoction as it wasn't too rich, wasn't too sweet and wasn't too tangy. Portion-wise, it was a bit on the smaller side as it left me craving more. Before I talk about the iced matcha latte, I must preface this by saying that I'm a big fan of Starbucks' Green Tea frap. The one I had at the Smelly Cheesecake Cafe was much less sweet and just as creamy and refreshing. I don't have a single bone to pick when it comes to this spot. Plenty of comfortable seating, some pillows, inviting atmosphere and super friendly service! Perfect for a catch up session or even a date.

The cheesecake here is really great! Matcha one had a subtle matcha taste but enough to be…read moreenjoyable, and it was so soft and delicate. Service is pretty fantastic too. Really friendly and really efficient. It felt slightly pricey for the small size, but worth it.

I have been coming to this absoloutely awesome bakery for about a year now, working in nearby…read moreChullora. An excellent port of call, I've had to cut back my visits because the wife told me I was spending too much money there. BBQ Pork Roll Bread: Can be a little hit and miss depending on how busy the rush is but even though it may not be always crunchy its definetely fresh and fluffy. Fillings: Beautiful fresh hot Roasted Pork. I think its pork shoulder. Perfectly seasoned and juicy. Never dry and overcooked. Nice dried pork crackle compliments the meat. Vegetables: Not overly packed out with carrot as many places do to fill the roll out. The carrot is pickled nicely. Also some pickled and fresh crunchy cucumber, and a very thick stem of spring onion gives a nice heat to go with the cucumer. Chilli: Always a good amount of birds eye chilli throughout the roll. Dont have to ask for extra. At least a piece in every bite to feel that burn. Value: $8.50 for a BBQ pork, $6.50 for a standard Bahn Mi. $4.00 for a 600ml coke. Getting a meal for $20 is hard to beat nowadays, so to get two rolls and a drink that fills you up until dinner with change from a $20 Overall: An excellent Vietnamese Bakery in Regent Park/Bamkstown region. Worth stopping off to try their fare. Staff are lovely and friendly, if a little frantic during the busy times. I havent reviewed their standard Bahn Mi (photo attached) but its much the same. They also do some ripper dim sims. I usually go steamed, but their fried ones are excellent too.

Where the bank clerks used to sit are huge plates of baklava or nougat or monster Easter eggs due to the season. They also sell gelato and cakes. And also as a newbie, I had no idea how the ordering system works, but I got by when I said to the lady at the counter, "Can I get five pieces of...." walked to wherever it was and pointed to what I wanted. On my second visit, I discovered that you need to specify which plate size to get and then you can point and pick what you want. The big plates seem to be good value for parties or events. There's hardly any labels at their displays so it's hard to know what exactly it is that you're getting if you're not familiar with what they are. I think we've tried the sfoof and one flavour of their baklava, which are now both my favourites. They are pretty sweet and can get a bit sickening if you eat too much at one go, but delicious nonetheless, and great to get the garlic smell off your breath after a meal at nearby El Jannah. There are some tables and chairs for eating in, I reckon it would be good to get a group of friends together and get one of everything to get a sampler of what they have.
