The better of the two Subways near to Southend high street. The food is great value - each time I have eaten here I have had the 12" sub and drink deal for £5, and there are enough options to not need to look at the regular menu. The quality of the sub sandwiches I have had here has always been excellent; I have seen staff throw away ingredients if they appear to be below-par and bring out a fresh batch. The restaurant is usually very clean and a good standard of hygiene is observed in the preparation of the subs. The staff are personable and not averse to engaging in casual conversation with guests. Weather permitting, outdoor seating is available.
The few criticisms I would make of this branch are that if you visit in the late afternoon or evening, they will be out of several ingredients so you might not be able to have what you wanted. Also around this time, the upstairs seating area will be closed.
As this Subway is quite small, you're not guaranteed to be able to eat in during busy times. Some of the tables are arranged in such a way that they are inadequate for a relaxing, enjoyable meal - for example, if you happen to be sitting on a small table for two next to the queuing area, or on one of the barstool type seats at the front of the restaurant. The idea presumably is to encourage customers to eat their sandwiches quickly and leave, although as someone who prefers to sit and digest for quite a while after eating, a comfortable environment factors greatly in my overall impression of an establishment.
I would certainly recommend this over the Subway at the other end of the high street (which has always appeared to be unclean and uniniviting) and it's a good lunchtime option, although its inconvenient location means I rarely go out of my way to eat here unless I have a lot of time to spare. read more
