Love, love, LOVE the Utica location of Brooklyn Pickle!…read more I first discovered this gem thanks to a paramedic out in Syracuse who told me it was a favorite among first responders. It was conveniently located near my office in DeWitt, so I became a regular--and was thrilled when they opened a location closer to home in Utica. It definitely did not disappoint! My go-to is the hot pastrami on dark rye with Russian dressing. But don't make the rookie mistake of ordering a whole sandwich unless you have an exceptionally hearty appetite! These sandwiches are HUGE. I'm doing good just to make it through half of one. The Utica location occupies a turn-of-the-century warehouse, and the beautiful exposed brick walls give this already great deli a ton of character and a real sense of history. The staff is friendly, helpful, and more than happy to put together whatever sandwich masterpiece you can dream up. They also have a great selection of homemade sides, although I'll admit I've never gotten around to trying them. Between the size of the sandwich and my appetite, I'm lucky to get through half! The homemade pickles that come with every sandwich, however, are absolutely to die for. Parking can be a little challenging given the location, but don't give up...there's additional parking in the back, and the front lot tends to fill up quickly. One of my must-go-to lunch spots in Utica and definitely worth a visit!

Mello's is the quintessential hole in the wall sub-shop that is truly incredible. Nothing reminds…read moreme more of Dibella's(Rochester, NY) than Mello's. Always fresh bread, topping and meat selection is perhaps limited but top notch and generously applied. Like any quality sandwich shop the portions are incredible. I get a small roast beef for lunch and have trouble finishing it, a medium is bigger than most larges and I can't even imagine what a large looks like. The one quirk I can say is they do tend to run out of certain meats some days but I take that as a testament to how busy they are. On days where they are out of roast beef I roll with turkey with no regrets, everything these guys make tastes great. The help is always very friendly, albeit very casual, be prepared to have your balls busted just a bit, but that is exactly what I'm looking for at a place like Mello's, simple delicious food with a bit of personality. I've had lunch from this place countless times, at least 20, and have never been disappointed in the least. As a self professed sandwich snob I gladly stake my reputation on this place, if you like great subs no frills you will love this joint.

There is a counter to the left as you come in, followed by an unattractive cooler case with signs on it. In between is a bakery case that is small but had a nice selection when I was there. I ordered a cup of decaf and a small chocolate almond cupcake, for a price of $8. I declined the plastic box and sat down with the cupcake in an upholstered chair opposite the counter. I thought my coffee would be right up but it took many minutes. I almost left. The cupcake was small but good (fluffy cake, sugary frosting). Then I noticed the sign that said everything was gluten and dairy-free. Surprise! When the coffee was ready, the cream was put in for me. I guess it was nondairy. The coffee was warm like a keurig makes. I had noticed Lunch menus in a wall pocket and Brunch menus behind the counter. So this place is actually full restaurant for people with gluten and dairy allergies. The lunches all seemed to cost ~$18 and seemed inventive. Fries were available as a specialty. There were a lot of tables in the long, cool, dark room. It seemed like a decent place to have an undisturbed meal while talking with friends.
