Was a good excuse to see Hampton's cute downtown as well as get a really good bite. When I saw the special board I sort of wanted that salad.... And I was told there was one quiche special left. But I was hungry so I asked about getting half a panini (turkey with pepper jack) and half that special salad. Was bummed they had run out of feta, but moved to the potato soup and that was such a good move! Left there full and happy!

The menu is simple in all the right ways: sandwiches, wings, salads, and a few other staples. I went with their award-winning tenderloin and onion rings. My wife had boneless wings and the deep-fried cauliflower. The food was excellent across the board. Portions were big, nothing was greasy, and everything was cooked exactly how it should be. The cauliflower was crisp and seasoned well, the wings were solid, and the tenderloin was spot-on--great flavor, not oily, and the onion rings were light and perfectly done. Our bartender/waitress, Jesse, was outstanding. She was friendly, checked on us several times, and made sure everything was right. All in all, a great stop. Good food, generous portions, and the kind of service you don't take for granted. We'll gladly make the 30-minute drive to come back.

That's easier said than done in parts of rural Iowa, but finally we ended up at the Latimer Grocery. Many thanks to the manager who let us use the facilities in this sort of emergency situation. This restaurant was a pleasant surprise to find in a small Iowa town…read more The decor was nothing special, but their food and margaritas easily made up some difference. Our table ordered three different margaritas that were all excellent and their chips tasted like they had been made fresh that morning. Their mild and hot salsas were also very fresh and homemade, as well as their cheese dip. This restaurant had one of the better Chili Colorado's that I have ever had. The other people in my party also loved their food (large shrimp cocktail and pollo la creama) as well. We all would highly recommend giving this restaurant a shot and you will be pleasantly surprised as well.

I think it's great that my first Yelp review is for my favorite restaurant on the planet. I love…read morethis place. I live in California but I grew up in Iowa and Pro's is a great bastion of the classic tradition of "loose meat" sandwiches that I grew up with. When we come to Iowa every year around July 4th, this is always our first stop for lunch. They pack their sandwiches until they are overflowing. The meat is really tasty. Try the homemade pies and the root beer. This is Iowa food! As a footnote, Pro's started out many years ago as a Maid-Rite which is where the sandwich tradition began. There are a handful of former Maid-Rites around Iowa that shed the franchise but still sell the sandwich and have retained the mom and pop restaurant feel that used to be there back in the 60's. Modern Maid-Rites are a bit more fast food oriented and standardized. I still like Maid-Rites, they are my favorite for fast food in the Midwest, but I seek out the old school former franchises wherever I can find them. The only other one I know about is the Canteen in Ottumwa, but I would love to find more.
