The soft tacos barely had any meat in them and what was there didn't taste like meat, more like cardboard filler in beef broth or something, and the chicken quesadilla had maybe 4-5 small diced pieces of chicken in it about the size of tic-tacs. Prolly going to avoid them for a while unless it's late and I don't have any other options.

I ate here since I was doing business with a coworker and we decided to go here because it gave her…read morenostalgia of having one in the city she was born and raised in. Apparently, this chain had many locations at one time, but they downsized to this sole location in all of KY (I think). This place reminded me of Arby's, with its roast beef sandwich; however, if Arby's had salads and baked potatoes as sides. I ended up ordering a Rax, Lite Salad, and water. What I did not expect was the large (I guess they only had one size for water) was charged as if it was a normal fountain drink (later found out on the receipt that it was charged under a combo)? I think the Rax a la carte was $4.99 and the Lite Salad was $2.99. The large water, if a la carte would have been like $2.89 (total was like $11.54)! I noticed on the receipt that it was combo'd and the price of the salad was like $1.50 upcharge? Would I not have saved money had I just bought everything a la carte? $7.98 instead of $8.78 for the combo and a Lite Salad with upcharge, bringing the total to $10.28. Then Kentucky state tax, $0.64 and the city of Harlan charges a city tax of $0.26. Geezus. Not even Lexington charges a city tax. Harlan should be like Beverly Hills (I mean it has the hills part) if they are charging a city tax. If I had known they charged for water, which I just had seen the employee fill up with water from a faucet (not even from a machine, just a sink faucet, with ice); I would have opted for a soft drink. I feel like many places now days are charging for water or enveloping it into a combo (the right thing to do would have been to charge the Rax and Lite Salad separately). It would be fine if it was something like $0.25 or so for the cup (Starbucks does that); however, at the regular price of a large drink, combo'd? That is a bit steep. I am kind of mad, Lol. Good thing my employer gives me a diem to cover meals.

That's a pleasant change from some chain places with their barely above luke-warm offerings. As soon as a guest left, someone was there to wipe down the tables and sweep the area for the next guest. The breakfast burrito was gigantic, and tasty. It was easily large enough to serve two with the right mix of tomato, potato, eggs. Oh, and it may have been breakfast, but the banana split still tasted good even at ten in the morning. A classic small town DQ but with food that really hit the spot when you're on the road and don't want to stop for a full meal. The employees are pleasant, albeit aloof to strangers and make no secret they're talking about you. It's not just paranoia either. They look at you, nudge each other, whisper, and then all turn and look at you. Fortunately, I knew I didn't look like I'd just come in from an all-nighter. It was a little disconcerting It won't stop me from coming here again, though. They'll get used to it.

It has since grown to its present location which has indoor seating as well as outdoor picnic tables and a place to order both inside and out. The four locations are all in Eastern Ky and apparently owned by the same family. The place has the feel of the original Dairy Joints that were started in the 1950's. When I sought this place out that is what I thought I was getting. Every Kentucky town seems to have one and Frankly I am a sucker for them all. This is just like the original one in the 1950's except newer and cleaner. The locals seem to like it. The walls are covered in awards in the "Best of" categories Best Hot dog best Burger etc. I ordered the chili dog and onion rings. Delicious! That is about all I can say Simply Delicious. Now to test them on their authenticity as a 1950s redo I ordered a chocolate malt. Every Dairy place from the 1950s serves chocolate malts to us old guys that still have enough brain cells to remember what a chocolate malt is. Well it was started in the 1980s and no chocolate malt for me. I ordered a Chocolate Milk shake and it was all good. I feel sorry for the younger generation. Chocolate Malts are a million times better but what do you do. Go with the times. The place is clean, the food is good and the service is friendly. When in Harlan stop by the Dairy Hut.
