Scozzafava’s Deli - Meatball sandwich & Italian combo sandwich

Scozzafava’s Deli

The food experience that is Calgary continues. My brother loves this place so we decided to go here…read moresince it was close by. He says that this might be the best sandwich place in the city. We came to the store to order. and you know the service is top notch. The owner is very friendly and there is a warm ambiance about the place. On to the food, My brother order a chicken parm subs and say his sub was excellent as always. I ended up getting two subs. One was the meatball sub which was exceptional. The meatballs were well seasoned and were larger than my mom made when she was alive. the buns were toasted to perfection crunchy but not burnt. They had just enough sauce and cheese to compliment the sub but not overpower it . i also got a turkey pesto sub which had a lot of meat and cheese. This was very good and if i come back to Calgary i will definitely come back.

Now this is how you make a sandwich! There's such a thrill in finding incredible local eats. I'm…read morenot usually a big sandwich person, but a good foodie friend of mine said they heard the hype about Scozzafava's so I went along. No regrets. If you didn't know about this spot, you might easily pass by without a second glance. Scozzafava's serves up authentic, classic Italian sandwiches that just slap. They use a soft sesame seed bun, which probably is the most unique part of the sandwich. For their marinara sandwiches, I wish they used a thicker bun to better absorb all the sauce. The sesame bun didn't keep its integrity, sadly. The meatball marinara was glorious! Slightly spicy, super moist meatballs, slightly sweet marinara, and perfectly paired with bitterness of the rapini. Don't forget the cheese pull! We also grabbed the classic Italian deli, which was scrumptious and very filling. You can't go wrong with either option, in my opinion.

Saigon Deli - Beef satay sub SO GOOD!

My friends were craving banh mi so we decided to try out Saigon Deli. It's located next door to Pho…read moreRang Dong Restaurant (which seems to be run by the same people). The menu is short and sweet; 10 types of banh mi along with a few Vietnamese desserts (sadly they were completely out). There were three workers running the deli; I like how they make all the banh mi's fresh. They actually ran out of bread but lucky for us, they got more delivered. Clearly fresh baguettes and they toast them on request. You can also choose exactly what you want in your banh mi's and if you'd like it spicy. - 2x Banh mi thit nguoi ($5.50) - assorted cold cuts with pâté. This is the classic, the OG. The baguette had a nice crispy outside and soft, slightly chewy inside. The butter that they smear inside is deliciously addictive. Good portion of meat and they stuff the inside with the usual cucumbers, pickled carrots, daikon and cilantro. - 2x Banh mi dac biet ($6.00) - house special sub. We tried this one out to compare; I liked this one a smidgen more. Might have been because we got this one spicy. Cheap hole in the wall spot with good quality banh mi. Cash only!

I tried the chicken and beef sub a few years ago and I didn't get the hype. Recently I tried the…read morecold cut sub and now I get the love this deli gets. The pate has a rougher texture and a stronger, richer flavour than Thi Thi, Trung Nguyen and Kim Anh. The meats were thickly cut and flavourful, and Saigon gives you more meat than other places. The toasted bread was crunchy, but not so hard it cuts into the roof of your mouth. With the smear of yellow butter and the smell of the pungent white onions, I found this sandwich rustic and satisfying. Pro tip - ask for extra butter and pate if you want your sub extra creamy. Otherwise the amount given is more moderate.

Made From Scratch - Special. Clubhouse with chicken rice soup.

Lovely independent spot to grab a homemade breakfast or lunch in Gulf Canada Square. In addition to…read moresome sandwich and salad staples, they have rotating weekly features of different hot dishes and soups. On this visit, I tried the mac and cheese and beef/barley soup. The soup was warm and inviting with real beef. But, the real highlight was the mac and cheese: extra creamy made with real cheddar cheese and topped with buttery homemade croutons. For the portions provided, $10 is more than fair for well-prepared comfort food!

They offer two fresh soups every day which are clearly not canned and made from scratch. They also offer a different special every day of the week that can be supplemented with a salad or a small soup. These specials range from clubhouse sandwiches, to spring roll on vermicelli, to mac n' cheese (scratch made). One of my go-to places for lunches and as a soup connoisseur they are able to beat out most places by providing homemade soups instead of the typical generic Campbell's stuff you find in most delis. One thing I would like is for them to switch up and try their hand at making other soups because I have been here so many times the soups are getting slightly old (but still tastier and better value than Sunterra) TLDR: Soups good, specials can be good, sandwiches fresh, salad available.
