I have been a loyal fan of Subliminal Projects since 2009 and an even longer fan of OBEY and Shepard Fairey. I first came to SP in 2009 where I attended the Martha Cooper show. Since then I have been to almost all of SP's shows. Either on reception openings or during the run of a particular show. Being from Orange County too, it's quite a trip for me. Never the less, Shepard and his Team at SP work hard to bring interesting, informative and well thought out art shows. SP showcases many styles of art. From Street to New Contemporary to Pop and much more in a wide array of mediums that range in oil to mixed to instillation. Not being traditionally art educated, I am always learning something new about the art that SP brings to it's walls.
Located in a wonderful old style brick building located right on the corner of Sunset Blvd. & Elysian Park Ave. with ample space that has three rooms and a small gift shop in the back that features prints or other items that relate to the current show in additional to a great selection of books by Ginkgo Press as well as other OBEY novelties. There are always free stickers too at the counter! The staff is always friendly and are happy to answer any questions one might have. Shepard's personal office is located above the gallery as well.
Over the past years I have been thrilled to see the works of Martha Cooper, Stanley Donwood, Jamie Reid, Skullphone, Lee, Futura, Fab Five Freddy, Mark Mothersbaugh, Dee Dee Ramone Ron English, Ryan Mcginness, Keith Harring, Lisa Kahane, Crash, Daze, Dave Markley, Glen E. Friedman, Curtis Kulig aka "Love Me" as well as Shepard Fairey and many more.
If you attend one of SP's opening receptions one night. You might be lucky enough to catch Shepard in mix! Shepard has always been a fan of DJing shows at SP. You can always count on him to spin a healthy mix of old school punk, rock & hip-hop. Even in between songs Shepard is always happy to take a few minuets to "meet & greet" his fans and patrons. Shepard and his wife Amanda are always friendly. He will also gladly sign anything OBEY (prints, books, etc.) that you put in front of him. The only two things he will NOT sign are the Obama Hope poster and a particular Obey print or prints that was stolen from him by a former intern. Oh yeah, awesome open bar on these nights which serve Modello, PBR and wine. There are VIP receptions usually before the general public. These opening reception nights are wonderful to catch some musician, actor or celebrity buying or enjoying the same art as you. There are valets as well if you are have trouble finding parking. I usually find a spot on Sunset Blvd.
If you come during the day, you may have to be buzzed in for entry. I have always find the lighting better during the day for taking pictures of the works in addition to fewer people as well.
Prices for these works and pieces do command a high dollar amount, but if you are on a budget. There are always limited edition prints that coincide with the currant show.
Overall, this is a great and inexpensive way to see some art and culture. Whether your on a date, hanging with some friends, visiting from out of town or even if your doing the lone wolf thing. You won't be disappointed. read more
