Sub station II is a sub place that is a long time fixture in the Louisville area located in a shopping center off fern valley road situated between the feee way exits and Preston Highway in the okolona area. Ive probably driven/ridden by this location over a thousand times in my life. I grew up in the area it is located in and worked at UPS down the road for a long time in my younger years. For some reason until tonight I had never eaten there before. Which is a shame because I enjoyed my sub sandwich quite a bit so I've been missing out on a good sandwich for over 30 years it seems. I was with the wife and my oldest and youngest daughters (#1 and #4). We decided to dine in. The lobby area is very spacious. You walk up to the register and place your order then you seat yourself. They will call out your order number and you return to the counter and grab your food. Somehow we all ended up with the spicy Italian whole (foot long). We all got ours dressed differently so all was a bit different. I really enjoyed my sandwich a lot. The bread was really good and fresh, the salami had nice flavor and the whole sandwich was just really fresh. I'm a fan of subway but I'll say this place has better subs then subway. Fresher and more substance. More filling. They also list the calories count next to each sub as well like subway is famous for. So that's cool for the calorie counters. My wife and and daughter both enjoyed it as well. My wife got a side of chili and it was not great. It tasted more like cheap mamwich or sloppy joe mix. She fed that to our one year old who was smashing the crackers and will eat anything. So while it was not very good chili it did not go to waste. Overall cool and nostalgic (they had a couple old arcade games) hole in the wall sub shop that I can now see why it has lasted as long as it has. I will not wait another 35 years to visit. Worth a visit and grabbing a tasty sub sandwich. read more

For the longest time, I had no idea Sub Station II was a chain. This is partially because it's a fairly small one; it operates around 40 stores across five states, most of which are in its native South Carolina. Beyond that, it also has a certain type of old-school, hole-in-the-wall charm that just feels effortlessly local. You could compare it to Ollie's Trolley in that regard, which has become an iconic part of Louisville culture despite originating as a chain. There's something I've been certain of for years, though: this is my favorite place in the area to grab a sub or reuben. Actually, I think the latter might be the biggest draw; the Sub Station II reubens are consistently outstanding and I wouldn't change a thing about 'em. Their menu is strong across the board, though, with bargain-level prices and meats that are both tasty and crammed to the brim of each sub. If you're not a reuben fan, my top recommendation would be the Italian (though who could dislike reubens, right?!). In a nutshell, this is one of those restaurants that doesn't reinvent the wheel but is just really, really great at what it does. Sub Station II is also an under-the-radar catering option if you're looking to shake things up from the usual pizza/Panera/Mark's Feed Store. The sandwich I had from Sub Station today was one of the best sandwiches I've had since I moved to Louisville 16 years ago! If you want a sandwich that will punch you in the face with flavor you've got to try this place. I went with something rather basic because I've been disappointed before so many times with boring bread and bad cold cuts everywhere else. But a simple turkey and cheese here was like a symphony! Everything was perfectly portioned, which is quite an art that I don't think many can appreciate until you find a sandwich like this. I loved the seasoning. When a sandwich is properly dressed with salt, pepper and a little oregano, you really taste the difference. The bread stands up to the condiments but it doesn't intrude on the other ingredients and the turkey is sliced very thin, just the way I like it. I finally found my sandwich heaven! I've been eating at Sub Station II for as long as I can remember. It's nostalgic and delicious. So happy they're still around. It was where I played Donkey Kong arcade for the first time. They threw a couple of pickle spears in the bag for me and would have done peppers too but I made a reply fail and only asked for the pickles. The set up isn't like subway so you don't get to see them prepare your sandwiches and mine was wrong and my daughter's was also, once we got it home and opened our sandwiches. This place used to be great when Chip was still alive. He made sure all sandwiches were made fresh. Since his passing the sandwiches are pre-made to accommodate the noon rush Hut sacrifices the quality of the sandwich as the meat moisture gets into the bread and makes it not so fresh tasting. I was very disappointed in this place. The staff was a bit on the rude side and the prices were very high. My daughter did not want ham on her sandwich and wanted to substitute it for a different meat however they refuse to do it I had to pay the full price of the sandwich and get charged an additional for the turkey while they kept the ham. I have never heard of a sandwich shop charging you extra while keeping a portion of what you already paid for never in my life will I ever go back here or recommend this place. read more

I have no idea what the bad reviews are for. I have been coming here since I got out of high school and have invited many people to come eat with me. I grew up in the area but my 1st time here was today. I got #16, #19 and the Gyro. I tasted all of them and the subs were as good (for a more than fair price) as I have found, anywhere! I've lived all over the world and would put these up against any I've had anywhere. The Gyro's are Kronos so, while good, are pretty standard wherever you get them. I will say that they added plenty of fresh onion, tomato & tzatziki so it was very fresh. The staff was very welcoming and friendly as well. I read all the reviews and it seems like the best ones came a few years back and apparently before the original owner passed on the business. Most of the recent reviews seem to be average rating at best. I disagree with the folks saying these sandwiches are anywhere close to average!! If there were more Sub Station II locations the chains would be in big trouble. read more

I may have been one of the first customers who dined at Sub Station when it opened its doors a block up Fern Valley from its current location back in the late 70s when I was attending Watterson College up the street. Through the years, I have come back to partake of one of the better sub sandwiches in Louisville. Theirs is a more an old school take on a sub, rather than dressing it up with fancy breads and such. Meats and cheese are sliced up for your sandwich when you order like in an old deli rather than being sliced up in the morning and wrapped in wax paper like a lot places do nowadays. The rolls are always fresh with a good texture and the meats are also fresh with nice flavors. This is not the fanciest place, and a couple of my friends don't like it because they serve cold subs and my wife doesn't care for the mayo they serve, but I have enjoyed it for three decades and will probably keep coming back for some time to come. read more
