Officially Europe's first radio station for blind and partially sighted listeners - Insight Radio is part of RNIB. Now, first things first - I am not blind or partially sighted. This, however, does not mean that I can't sppreciate Insight Radio! On many a late night when I'm making my way home and Radio 1 has gone past the stage where it's entertaining and every other station seems to be playing nothing but adverts - I often stumble across Insight Radio. Now, I don't normally realise that I've done this. I'm normally happily listening away to Coldplay or the like when the song ends and I realise where it is that I've stumbled upon. Insight Radio offers talking books, blind movie reviews, RNIB job listings and information for blind and partially sighted people as well as good music. They have very good relationships with local charities, and can often be found mentioning charity fundraising events taking place. They also maintain a very up to date and linked in twitter page - which you'll find links to on their website.

It has been kicking around Glasgow for almost nine years now so it's obviously doing something right. Like all student publications, Scotcampus is prone to the odd cringeworthy feature, written by a contributor who will no doubt look back with overwhelming regret in the future, but it's still a good wee read to pick up in a pub or a cafe.

Hi All, I came to Glasgow for a language course, and every…read moreday I walk by the river Clyde bridge "squiggly" to the city and I have before me the building where the logo of British Telecommunications. Looking at this building with the logo of BT something was missing. I came to the conclusion that there under the logo BT is the perfect place for a clock. "I put" under the logo dial of a clock and is now a full picture. If you would happen to the other side of the river and it turns 360 degrees is in sight you do not see any clock. The clock will look every day thousands of eyes watching the BT logo, because the same logo that catches the eye is not a people today often control the time. Paul's review is very enlightening - I had no idea of the cut backs, but I do notice the uncomfortable silence that should be filled by vendors yelling out "final TIMES!" My personal favourite was the guy posted on Agryle Street outside Marks who started off at a bellow and tailed off: "EEVE-NING TIImesssss". What a legend. Sadly, corporacy (and yes, it's always to blame) is eating away at every morsel of local culture we have, so the vendors are no more and arguably the times has stayed more blandly neutral of late. But it is not entirely lacklustre and as Gareth and Paul have said, you can trust the more personalised columns of this paper, not to mention the comprehensive, balanced approach to story telling. No melodrama included - just some facts. It's quite fitting that it's parochial - I'd agree with Gareth on that front but y'know, Glasgow grows smaller with every year I get older - and as Paul rightly pointed out, everyone knows someone who knows someone who dog sat for them years ago....you get the idea. Six degrees of separation. I guess the Times is still a glue which keeps us still together, which accounts for why it still has a 400 thou strong readership. I really like the "Your Voice" section as there seems to be a continuous banter with what is going on in the city, and the Times is always fair in giving a variety of groups and stories air time. But I miss the street vendors. Glasgow would sure be an emptier place if the Times was to disappear along with them.

Their music / film sections concentrate on less mainstream releases, and some sections, particularly the letters, have a very "quirky" feel, for want of a better word, which I'm sure some people like but i just find a bit annoying. The sport section is far weaker than the other daily rags. Still, it's free though, so can't grumble.

The news articles are nothing special; pretty much a rewrite of the wires. But it's the features where The Metro truly shines; as well as the daily "Guilty Pleasures" section, a celebrity gossip update which delivers pretty much what is says on the tin, the newspaper regularly publishes indepth and interesting interview with top film directors, writers and actors; recent interviewees have been Clint Eastwood, Christian Slater and Ricky Gervais. And whoever came up with the 60 Second Interview deserves a knighthood as far as I am concerned.

We may have had far less listeners than Pete Tong, but Subcity was and still is the best way for new DJs in Glasgow to get to play the exact kind of music they want, with no rules, to the public, before inevitably selling out and playing the Grease megamix week in week out at weddings. On a serious note, some of the shows are indeed pretty awful technically as there aren't really any resources to train new presenters. Even if the chat is a bit crap though you'll always likely pick up a good new tune you've never heard before, so it's always worth a listen.

OK, so not all the shows are of a high standard, but then that is what one would expect from a free radio station run by students. However, when the shows are good they can be very good indeed. As it is the radio station for the University of Glasgow much of the music is local in flavour . There are no set play-list and it claims that 90% of the content is specialist programming. To quote their website:"Subcity covers almost every musical base, including Motown, Drum and Bass, Synthpop, Jazz and Techno with interesting and engaging presenters providing information on the music they play. The station broadcasts online all year round and annually on FM. The station is also a big part of the Glasgow club scene and they regularly put on their own nights. It has also been a platform for some of the likes of Optimo, Freakmenoovers, Mixed Business and Mish Mash and Boom Monk Ben to enter the clubbing big school.

It was super busy and full of mostly international students using email and the usual stuff. They didn't have the version of microsoft word I needed in order to do the tasks I had to do, so it was a waste of a journey for me and still had to pay £1 for 15 minutes even though I was there for approximately 3. The rates are reasonable but it is quite cramped inside with uncomfortable high chairs which are quite close to the person beside you which is awkward. Not as comfortable as a nice University library, which is what I'm used to.

So explained the fellow at Yeeha, anyway. On a Sunday afternoon I suddenly remembered I had to print out plane tickets for an insanely early Monday flight. So I was very grateful that Yeeha is open until 6pm on Sundays, an hour and a half later than the closest Staples. It doesn't look like much from the street, just a small sign that's easy to miss. Wear comfortable shoes for the two-storey climb upstairs. You may also wish to bring sanitary hand wipes; the keyboard I used was pretty grubby.

This trinity of west coast media have been in operation together for years though sadly massive, MASSIVE, cuts have saw a significant decline in content. Newsquest Herald & Times was in the news as it fired all of the staff and made everyone reapply and since this event 2 years ago the papers have never been the same. A good friend of mine worked as an intern at The Herald over the summer and now no longer wants to be a journalist. Given that he worked hard at university to achieve this goal this really does highlight how bad things must be here. Reports of a small army (up to 12 at one time) working away for no pay, or even travel expenses, reflect a dire state of affairs. You can buy the Herald (80p) Monday - Friday, the Glasgow Evening Times (45p) Monday - Saturday and the Sunday Herald (£1) on a... well take a wild guess!

What most impresses me about The Herald is that it manages to support artists far more directly than the English magazines: the criticism is healthy and robust, and far more resources are put into covering emerging artists than in other papers. I've recently moved onto reading the broadsheets as papers like The Sun, while convenient, don't…read morenecessarily offer too much insightful journalism. They are however, quite entertaining. Unlike The Daily Record who hides it's sleazy gossip behind a family-friendly veil, or The Daily Star which features little more than reality TV news and pages upon pages of celebrity upskirt shots, The Sun can be genuinely good fun. From a photoshopped image of a puffin dropping it's muck on Berti Vogts after the 2002 Scotland - Faroe Islands debacle to the consistently offensive TV column by Ally Ross, it never fails to entertain, even if it doesn't educate. To that end, it's probably got a hand to play in the dumbing down of everything from politics to TV that's occured over the past few decades, but as long as it keeps giving the public their fix of sport, gossip and nudity, few will complain.

Good journalism isn't completely missing but it's rare. Instead the Sun excels with its sports coverage, particularly of the lower football leagues, and its reliability when it comes to fantastic headlines. Super Caley Go Ballistic etc... was obviously its finest moment, but even when John Terry was caught being a naughty boy as recently as last week, it was the only paper which stepped up to the mark. "Surely some paper must use "A Bridge Too Far"", a friend of mine quipped. And alas, there it was. In the Sun. It's not big and it's not clever, but it does tend to raise a few more chuckles than its fellow comics.
