Officially Europe's first radio station for blind and partially sighted listeners - Insight Radio is part of RNIB. Now, first things first - I am not blind or partially sighted. This, however, does not mean that I can't sppreciate Insight Radio! On many a late night when I'm making my way home and Radio 1 has gone past the stage where it's entertaining and every other station seems to be playing nothing but adverts - I often stumble across Insight Radio. Now, I don't normally realise that I've done this. I'm normally happily listening away to Coldplay or the like when the song ends and I realise where it is that I've stumbled upon. Insight Radio offers talking books, blind movie reviews, RNIB job listings and information for blind and partially sighted people as well as good music. They have very good relationships with local charities, and can often be found mentioning charity fundraising events taking place. They also maintain a very up to date and linked in twitter page - which you'll find links to on their website.

I'd just love to see the look on, for instance, an American's face as they heard call after call of: "Ewan, Celtic are rubbish, Rangers are going to win the league." or "Roughie, Rangers are rubbish, Celtic are going to win the league." Along with Robin and Kat's morning show, the strangely-addictive daily talkshow (the football fan's brain-cell reducing equivalent to Jeremy Kyle) keeps the punters listening to Real Radio and ensures its future on the Scottish airwaves is safe. The station as a whole is not ground-breaking stuff, but it's a better than average commercial offering.

CamGlen Radio is a fantastic resource that covers the Southeast of Glasgow and beyond. All the…read morepresenters are local to Rutherglen and Cambuslang, every day CamGlen Radio delivers information on Community Projects including the upcoming 900th anniversary of the Town of Rutherglen. throughout the Covid pandemic they continued to broadcast from the presenters homes keeping the residents of Cambuslang and Rutherglen informed on where help could be accessed they also ran a food bank from their station premises. they continue to be active in the local community arranging events in conjunction with Healthy and Happy Community Development Trust.

We may have had far less listeners than Pete Tong, but Subcity was and still is the best way for new DJs in Glasgow to get to play the exact kind of music they want, with no rules, to the public, before inevitably selling out and playing the Grease megamix week in week out at weddings. On a serious note, some of the shows are indeed pretty awful technically as there aren't really any resources to train new presenters. Even if the chat is a bit crap though you'll always likely pick up a good new tune you've never heard before, so it's always worth a listen.

OK, so not all the shows are of a high standard, but then that is what one would expect from a free radio station run by students. However, when the shows are good they can be very good indeed. As it is the radio station for the University of Glasgow much of the music is local in flavour . There are no set play-list and it claims that 90% of the content is specialist programming. To quote their website:"Subcity covers almost every musical base, including Motown, Drum and Bass, Synthpop, Jazz and Techno with interesting and engaging presenters providing information on the music they play. The station broadcasts online all year round and annually on FM. The station is also a big part of the Glasgow club scene and they regularly put on their own nights. It has also been a platform for some of the likes of Optimo, Freakmenoovers, Mixed Business and Mish Mash and Boom Monk Ben to enter the clubbing big school.

It's perhaps not the best station to be listening to if you're looking for new and challenging…read moremusic, but I must say I don't really understand the previous reviewer's complaints about Clyde 1. Firstly, I don't see how an eclectic music selection is a problem. The majority of stations play a varied mix of music, and from various eras. This is particularly apparent nowadays with modern pop music being very similar in style to stuff from the 80s and early 90s, and so there is nothing wrong with playing an old song next to a newer one. Secondly, most of the Clyde 1 presenters have been doing the job for years, and as the station is one of the most listened to in a catchment area of about 2 million people, they're certainly not "amateur". They're definitely annoying, but that's an almost essential quality in a radio DJ anyway, as anyone who's ever listened to the repellent Chris Moyles or the rat-like Fearne Cotton will tell you. Finally, all commercial radio stations have just as many adverts, it's how they make their money. Radio 1 doesn't have any as it's funded by the public. Clyde 1 might be a bit cheesy at times, but it's been going for years so must be doing something right.

If you are lucky enough you might win a Clyde One t shirt and a cuddly tiger. Very rarely will you head a song on Clyde One that strays outside the top 40. But you have to applaud any station with a DJ that announces after Lady Gaga Bad Romance finishes "If you listen carefully to the end, it sounds like she's saying "wild jobby romance."" Tiger "Ohhh oh oh oh oh oh oh, goodbye!" Tim was the king of this and admittedly the station has gone downhill as guys of his era have headed out while hip young things like Romeo have sauntered in, but it's just so hard to say anything bad about as inoffensive a thing as Clyde One. I guess it's at its strongest with its football coverage, as for every nugget of nonsense uttered by Derek Johnston, you will get two bits of truly astounding commentary from Peter Martin. For these alone, it's worth tuning in.
