We camped at Harrisville State Park and made it a point to visit here to check this place off of visited places in Michigan, and it turned out to be one of the best lighthouses we ever visited-- not as good as Whitefish Point but several steps up from McGulpin or Manistique. There was much more to see at Sturgeon than just a regular lighthouse tower. The relocated Bailey School added a bit of historicity, and the lady working in there was quick to tell you everything about everything. There was a very small gift shop that had minimal souvenirs. Perhaps, it was a slow day (or near the end of summer when things were closing down), but the lady there offered us a free 14x18" sketch of the lighthouse that fit nicely into a cheap frame from Walmart. They didn't have any magnets to add to our collection on the fridge, but the sketch is much better (and probably cost more than a few dollars). Inside the lighthouse quarters were several rooms that were all historically recreated, and you were free to roam around, while another old guy worker was excited to talk about everything as well. The tower itself was closed to the public on the day we went. We spent about an hour at this complex, and while we might not visit the area again, we have a sketch on the living room wall that looks like the lighthouse.

What a beautiful lighthouse and the property around it is beautiful. The staff are what made it wonderful. Very friendly and knowledgeable.

Stuff for kids - hands on game; area to climb through with tubes, slides, etc... a boat about to be shipwrecked complete with audio. Takes about an hour or a little more. We also did the shipwreck tour... 2 hours - well worth it - need to get lucky enough for a sunny day. Saw 4 wrecks via a glass-bottom boat; guides very knowledgeable and easy to approach. The Captain added some commentary; but we couldn't hear him through the audio. Tour is in Thunder Bay - just outside Alpena - you leave from the museum. Tours are at 10:00, 1:00 and, 4:00 My recommendation - get there 90 minutes before the shipwreck tour - tour the museum, take the tour - and stop in the gift shop on the way out. We got there at 11:30 and left at 3:15. ------------- p.s. - Yelp also has something for the Great Lakes Maritime Museum - it is the same place as this.

Wonderful National treasure. The movies were excellent and the boat ride great…read more Only recommendation I would have is that it would be great to have more exhibits in the museum. Maybe you could have a curator who would work with divers to find treasures hidden in private collections.

The Carl D Bradley and the Cedarville wrecks are in the memorial hall and there is a phenomenal amount of information about these awful wrecks with so many men lost. The museum is wall to wall with collages of inductees with stories of their service, photographs, illustrations, paintings artifacts, and ship models. There's a room dedicated to shipwreck victims and survivors of the S.S. Carl D. Bradley, S.S. Cedarville, S.S. Daniel J. Morell, and S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald with a video display. There's also a separate reading room filled with out of print historical journals and magazines such as "Calcite Screenings". The Lore hosts bell ringing anniversary services in memoriam to the shipwreck victims lost on the Carl D. Bradley, Cedarville, Daniel J. Morell, and Edmund Fitzgerald. This place is very informative and preserves Michigan's maritime heritage and legacy. Admission is $3.
