Berlin Kids International School counters a trend over the past few years, in which expensive private schools are somewhat-anxiously established to meet part of the demand for international education. This does not correspond with our idea of education. With the help of public funding and in cooperation with the non-profit Pfefferwerk gGmbH, Berlin Kids International School is able to accept children from all income groups. Our School is a long-term adventure for our international families. Starting off as a primary school in 2007, Berlin Kids International School will grow with its students to be their home in higher levels too. For this purpose we have found a very suitable building at Weinstraße 1, a large 5-story structure in a leafy park near the heart of downtown. Both English and German are spoken inside and outside our classrooms. Internationality is a vital aspect for the identity of the school, and it stands in the core of our concept. We judge our international, multicultural and bilingual background as a foundation for modern school education in a European and world context. We expect that many families in the east-center of Berlin will profit from our school in the coming years. We also believe that every child has a right to an affordable and accessible education. Therefore, our school will be of service to the fast-growing group of international families in this part of Berlin. Main classes will take place between 8:30 and 16:00. But since many of our parents are self-employed or working full time and therefore depend on longer hours of daycare, our doors will open early at 7:30 and close at 18:00.

It is located in Pankow-Weissensee, inside the Neumann Forum, a shopping center or mall, which makes the school hard to find. It offers a special educational concept, which is open and focuses on independent learning. Unfortunately, the high turnover of staff has meant that it is hard to implement the relatively good ideas. The school offers bilingual options from year 7 onwards, although the management has been vague about how it will be implemented. The school has an art focus. Lessons start at 8 am in the morning and end at 4 pm in the afternoon. There are extracurricular courses in the afternoon and the school uses their own catering company to provide breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. The quality of the food is average, but the prices quite high (organic!). Lessons are divided into an instruction and an independent learning part. If you are looking for something different, this may be it. But do not expect miracles, even though they may be promised at times!

They have sneaky fees that when asked where it is stated on their webpage, they avoid the answer. You also have to send your email multiple times because they typically answer half of the questions. Also they allow the instructors to select the books and the books are terrible. Like if you try to work outside of the class lessons, you are lost. The structure of the class was suuuuper slow. I got to where I brought other work to do at the same time because it was at such a snails pace. I have taken other language courses where there was MUCH more interaction among students, even online. When I asked about a refund, they made it clear that you have to request in the first week of the course. I found that a bit tough because I think most people are hopeful it will get better. Soooo it feels like they tell you it's money back guaranteed but create a system where it's difficult for the consumer to comply. Furthermore, they provide you "options" so that "you are satisfied" but the option to transfer to another course isn't realistic because every instructor uses a different book. Or they offer to let you join a different class in the following month but you have to pay a fee to do that. I didn't want to chance paying more money to have a repeat experience. Furthermore, the month offered isn't compatible with other life stuff, but I was not offered to select a month that is more suitable, hence providing options that aren't doable to say that you provided options of "good will" (they bolded "good will" multiple times in their email). So I guess it depends on what you want, something cheap and you may learn something, or higher quality, probably more expensive but will most likely learn more than a few things.

Great little school where the staff will take care of you…read more I've studied German for months to this school and I can tell that the courses were interesting, my teacher was good and would pay attention to each of us. If you have any problem you can surely find someone at the office to help you. I enjoyed being to that school, I think they put the priority on being here for each of us and to the quality of the services. The bad points would be that it's a little bit expensive and that you cannot find intensive evening courses.

When I first contacted Das Akademie, the support staff responded quickly and were very friendly and supportive in helping me find the best fit for a class. I was only in Berlin for seven weeks and wished to develop more confidence in speaking. I also have mild/moderate hearing loss and felt it might be better to have a one-on-one teacher to work with me. I wear hearing aids and with them most people don't realize I have trouble hearing, but language learning can be more difficult. On my first day, I spent time with the Director at DAS Akademie as he helped to choose a teacher that was a perfect fit. She quickly figured out that although I had learned many individual vocabulary words, I was still having difficulty with pronunciation and sentence structure. Rather than rush through exercises to "cover" material, we spent extra time practicing asking and answering questions so that I felt comfortable actually speaking in public. She was not only very creative in coming up with different ways of helping me practice, she did so in such a positive, energetic and fun way. My seven weeks passed way too fast. Each day that I walked into Das Akademie Berlin I was greeting with big smiles and encouraging words from everyone. Next summer I will likely come back to Berlin and if I do I will definitely be coming back. Everyone from the Director, to the teachers and all of the support staff are wonderful.
