The owner sells mostly to architecture and art students, but that is not all he has. He is a painter, and post-industrial lamp-maker! "What is that?", you ask. He takes ordinary objects that people see as junk and turns them into the funkiest one-of-a-kind lamps you will ever see! Some of them look like bugs, some look like robots, and some are just ...well... unique! This place is a Gainesville original!!! He makes his lamps from: guitars, microwave glass plates, fixtures, cars parts, brackets, or most anything that has used up its usefulness (post-industrial), and most people want to throw away! Just to see what he comes up with is amazing! When I was there, he was working on a lamp made from an old tuba! Yes! A TUBA!!!! You have to see this place to understand. He has a corner strewn with parts for his lamps. Wmay see junk, but he sees light!! I bought two jars of paint for my art, shook his hand, and said I'd be back to see hiw the tuba comes out! Check out the pics! Update: I went back amd bought a teach-yourself-to-draw book, and now I am drawing for the first time in my life!! Wow!!

So, the last time I ordered stuff from this Michael's, they didnt put everything I got with my order, and also included stuff I didn't order (wtf?). I decide to go in-person. Michael's has decided to go the way of stores like Winn-Dixie and Wal-Mart. They'v fired most of the employees. The employees that do work there are underqualified and cannot answer questions adequately, and simply- there are not enough employees working at the store period. I think there was one guy there manning the four front registers. No one actually seen working today in any other department. The four aforementioned registers are now touch screen computers- which are not-at-all intuitive. They begin by asking you numerous annoying questions about giving up your personal information so the company can pester and track you. Then, you notice in horror there is a camera now zeroed in on your face the entire time you are checking out, which is dystopian and makes you feel claustrophobic. It made me feel like the store thinks of me as a criminal. Finally, it was really tough to figure out where to pay- like three different places in the pay area looked like they could have been where you put your card. The whole thing was extremely tedious, depressing and invasive.. as well as deeply dehumanizing. Also whatever happened to customer service- oh wait, it was only ever all about getting our money. I won't be back to Michael's.

I've slowly come back into doing cross-stitch and it's been tough to find a local store with supplies, designs, and hand-dyed floss and fabric. There were a few kits at Reddi-Arts prior to their closure, but I haven't found much that isn't, at least, an hour drive away now. While the cross-stitch/embroidery section was a bit smaller than I hoped, I was excited to find some great Satsuma Street designs, some hand-dyed thread, and some different fabrics that were available. I definitely could come by with a floss color key and gather all I need for any project. I didn't get a chance to fully explore the books or even get into where the majority of PV Arts & Crafts fabric is held, but I'm looking forward to my next trip to delve in even more. As I was on my lunch, I didn't have too much time to poke around further into the store, so I'll have to make a return trip when I don't have a time restriction. This is a spot that is much bigger on the inside than it appears from the outside, and everyone would benefit for having some time to explore.

I walk in mostly for the great array of gifts spanning from geeky cookbooks and plushies to cute, niche purses and crafting kits. There's some adorable gift wrap and greeting cards, too. I'm not so much of an artist, but do need things framed from time to time. The framing department at Reddi-Arts is one of the best kept secrets in Jacksonville. I've gotten some wonderful pieces framed by them over the years as gifts and for personal items of my own. The folks there are wonderful to work with and there are plenty of options for frames to choose from at affordable prices.

But that browsing came after my visit to the framing department, to which I brought a certificate for framing. The service was excellent, the framer explained all the numerous frame, glass, backing, and other options with details on pricing. There were a ton of choices, I doubt you'd be unable to find something to go with whatever you're getting framed. The price was excellent too, though I came at a time when they were running a 20% discount. But I was heartened to know that you get discounts in the future just by becoming a customer of theirs. Great store, I will be back in the future the next time I need to get something framed. And I hope my daughter will have hours of fun getting craft supplies here in the future.
