Problem between sisters program

Street parking was relatively easy to find. Very welcoming and professional staff to assist and ensure a wonderful experience. They went above and beyond to provide outstanding customer service. The theater is clean, refreshments are sold, and the vibe is perfect. Looking forward to returning.

A beautiful theater space with extraordinary performances! My friend and I were very impressed by the quality of the musical Fun Home, the kind ushers, the beautiful space, and the cleanliness too!

Studio Theater is one of the most respected regional professional nonprofit theaters in the country, known for producing thoughtful and original plays with world class actors in an intimate setting. It's one of the treasures of the Loan Circle district.

Improv show!

Came here for my friend's Improv Level 1 class performance! The venue was clean with accessible bathrooms and in a great location with food and shopping all down the street. I brought in food from Whole Foods to eat before the performance and afterward, we walked down 14th street to have lunch and drinks! I'm interested in checking out what other events or performances there are here (anyone could have dropped in to watch the improv show!)

Great performance venue. Cozy, comfortable and quaint. Went to see Fat Ham and enjoyed the entire experience and the play was so much fun! Look forward to seeing future performances here!

Was one of the lucky ones to catch Pass Over this past weekend before the Studio Theater closed due to Covid 19. Pass Over is intense, tragic. It's an emotional play and touches on many heartbreaking social issues. I wasn't sure what to expect and got an earful and eyeful. The actors are superb; with a cast of only three (most of the drama is just with two), the audience gets to know these characters intimately. I did laugh at some of the humor thrown in for levity but overall this is one gritty, realistic dramatic production. It's perfectly suited for this venue. Really liked the set, too. Congrats to the playwright, director, cast and supporting crew for a quality staging. I think it would be difficult to carry off this particular script as well as it has been performed here, at the Studio Theater.

View from seats for Fun Home.

Fun Home musical was great. Seating inaccessible to people in larger bodies. Arm rests painful. Was extremely uncomfortable having to touch a stranger next to me for the whole show.

Where the drama happens during 'The Remains'

It's been way too many years since I've visited the Studio Theatre, and yesterday's matinee reminded me of what a great space this is. We saw 'The Remains', a compelling and entertaining drama about the trials and tribulations of a long-married gay couple facing a lot of the same challenges that straight couples have been facing for years (including dealing with family members who, of course, all have an opinion). You'll be in for the full 90 minutes, except for the last dissonant scene that really didn't add anything to the play - something that they'll hopefully work on before the play moves on to its next engagement. The Mead Stage itself is quite intimate - nine rows deep in the center, four rows deep on the sides - so even if you're towards the back, you're still quite close to the stage. We were in the next-to-last row and, quite honestly, I think those were some of the best seats in the house as you're slightly elevated from the rest of the center section, giving you a nice view of the stage. If you get to the theatre a little early (or would like to stay and linger with friends), there's a nice bar right outside the Mead Stage and, after performances, they open up the big garage door near their long high-top table, making for some great people-watching. The Studio Theatre's known for supporting up-and-coming playwrights, where you'll be able to see some amazing plays that may not be Broadway-bound (so few things are) but are equally as compelling, if not more so. Support your local theatre scene by checking out the Studio Theatre!

The Studio Theater is notoriously picky and perfectionist. If there's one place in the entire city that showcases the kind of theater that transects social mores and questions conventions, while using the highest performance standards and brilliant actors, it is the Studio. If you ever need to impress someone with your artsy side in a manner that will transport you to another world, take your emotions for a ride, and surprise and startle your regular thinking, then you should bring them to a Studio Theater performance. This place stands toe to toe with the elite theaters in the entire nation, Broadway, Chicago and Minneapolis included. I've watched plays here for over 15 years. During their season, they offer cutting edge interpretations of plays, with unique sets and staging. Their productions rightly receive critical acclaim. Watch out that their shows get sold out for weeks .... you need to think and plan ahead. The actors are drawn from the best theatrical programs in DC as well as New York and Chicago. You'll most likely see some gems when you go. Performances take place on four different stages, including a black box stage which allows a fully immersed or surrounded kind of theater experience rather than an apron format stage or an arena stage. They have an excellent lobby up on the second floor, with bar and foyer that offer ceiling-high windows looking out on the lively 14th street scene. Studio theater was an anchor of P and 14th Street waaay before the Whole Foods came and gentrified the entire neighborhood.

This venue is clean and contemporary and we were greeted by volunteers, nice touch. Inside the Mead theater we were seated in the last row and I grabbed the end seat so I could visually see the stage, however my tall hubby couldn't see above or around the gentleman in front of him because the his seat is on the same level. My hub was at first lucky to move to another seat. During the play dialogue I heard clear voices and realized they were coming from the street since we were near the exit door. My hubby also heard the street noise. It was a definite distraction especially because this production was confusing. Location, location.

On any given day, you can find a diverse slate of performances and events, ranging from classical & opera, to jazz, dance. broadway & musicals, theater, country & bluegrass, comedy, popular programming, kids/family shows, films, variety, and special themed events...always an abundant lineup! I've been to the KC a fair share over the years and have attended all sorts of events here: orchestra performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, productions by the Washington National Opera, chamber music concerts on the Fortas Series, galas, festivals, indie shows, and community programs at the REACH. And each time I'm awed being at this cultural center in the Capitol city, which exhibits the highest caliber of artistic excellence in the nation and on the world stage. The building itself is huge and imposing, but there are helpful staff everywhere to answer questions and direct you where you go. Because the footprint is so big, if it's your first time visiting, definitely leave plenty of extra time to walk up to the building and find the right hall/entrance, pick up tickets, and get settled in your seats. For pre-concert dining, there are a couple of options on premises: the more formal Roof Terrace Restaurant, or the casual KC Café which has hot food as well as grab-n-go sandwiches and snacks. Both are located on the Terrace level above the Hall of Nations. Otherwise, there aren't many options super close by without venturing into Foggy Bottom. Tazza, and Kingbird at the Watergate Hotel or its lobby bar/restaurant Next Whisky Bar are the only outside options within a 10-minute walk. The only thing I don't love is, if you're taking a taxi/Uber, it's pretty crazy at the end of the night when everyone is leaving and you're all waiting for your car on the long and chaotic line in the taxi stand area. The Foggy Bottom-GWU metro station is about a 10-minute walk. (There are free shuttles between the metro stop and KC.) Oh and check out the back of the building which has a lovely promenade where you can stroll along the Potomac River! It's peaceful and scenic. Too bad the recent politicization of KC is casting a shadow over the institution, but it is not going anywhere, and my review speaks only to the many wonderful performances that have been put on there and the hard working staff who continue to produce the best season possible. To quote conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya's thoughtful and passionate op-ed in the Washington Post (which you ought to read in its entirety): "Art is no mere commodity, like a boycotted product sold by an exploitative corporation or an aggressor in a war. Art has the capacity to change minds, shift cultures, challenge assumptions. Choosing not to perform deprives artists and art of power, and it aids regimes that fear being culturally challenged. Choosing not to attend performances of content we support will only ensure that this content is not presented in the future." Wurd!

We each got a credit, which made it nearly free. On April 12, 2019, I went to Arena Stage for the 1st time, and the INWEGO era began. You'd pay $19 for 1 show a month, $39 for 3 shows, & $59 for 5 shows. This included plays, concerts, sporting event, comedy, & other various events. I visited National Theatre 4 times all on INWEGO: 1. Tuesday, December 10, 2019: Fiddler on the Roof 2. Thursday, December 19, 2019: Jersey Boys 3. Tuesday, February 11, 2020: King's Speech 4. Wednesday, March 4, 2020: Bandstand A lot of great shows. Some good vantage points from the level to upper level section seats that I got along with my girlfriend of that time. It was a cool, grand venue. Each time was its own unique experience. December 10, 2019: I'll be honest that I was upset with my girlfriend of that time on that day. I had gotten home from work to quickly eat & take Metro down. I had some couscous at home. She was making it, but she had doctored it with cannabis. She had feminine issues that day, but I was pissed she ruined our couscous that night. I barely could talk to her I was shaking with anger. Ultimately, we were committed to going, and I still wanted to see Fiddler on the Roof. It was a great show with a great first impression of National Theatre. December 19, 2019: My girlfriend & I didn't break up on or shortly after December 10th's couscous. We were pretty good for Jersey Boys. This time my friend who got me to join INWEGO was joining us for the play. I remember my g/f & I had some disagreement in the early part of the evening around dinner, but I don't remember what it was about, and it didn't spoil the night. Jersey Boys was my favorite of the 4 plays I think. February 11, 2020: King's Speech was a great play and a good night for us on the lower orchestra level. That was the only time of the 4 we were on the orchestra level. March 4, 2020: Bandstand was another funny story. We were in the upper balcony section once again. We met up with her friends another couple sitting next to them. At the time, we were taking this Covid thing with a grain of salt not realizing what we would be facing soon, saying time to social distance & fist bumping but not thinking much of it. After the show, I learned my friend who got me to join INWEGO was there too. We were texting about the Metro or something after the show, and I was like what a coincidence we are at the same Metro. He mentioned Bandstand. We realized we were in the same row. He was like 8 seats further down, but we didn't notice each other. My girlfriend & I thought it was interesting he didn't try to coordinate with me. Conclusions: National Theatre is a great venue with a lot of memories. Sadly, INWEGO went out of business in Sept. 2020 as they couldn't survive the still Covid environment at that time. Perhaps, I'll visit National Theatre again if it was ever convenient.

(FYI: STC has productions in two separate theaters - Harman Hall and Klein Theatre, so make sure you know which location is the location for your production). Harman Hall is beautiful - modern, bright, large. We sat in the front row of the mezzanine, and the seats were great but I think most of their seats would be great. Unlike the prices are outrageous, I often like to sit in the front row of the mezzanine when I attend the theater, because I'm short and often find my view obstructed by people in front of me in theaters. Because Harman Hall is modern and newer than historic theaters (on Broadway in NYC, for example), the incline of seats in the theater is much more pronounced than in other theaters. I didn't need to sit in that front row, because I probably could have seen from anywhere. Our performance wasn't sold out, and the theater was not packed or crowded - short lines for the bar (especially on the top floor where we were sitting anyway), short lines for the bathroom. The location is convenient, near a couple of Metro stations, lots of restaurants and bars, and a few museums. We parked in a garage I reserved a spot in on SpotHero, which was less than $15 for the day, too. Although I tend to focus my reviews of theaters on the theater itself (you could see a good production at a theater and then a production you don't like as much - but you can still appreciate the theater - its comfort, its location, its amenities), I will say that the production we saw was interesting and thought-provoking. I'd say I'm likely to return, but I have tickets for a production in April, so I know I will be.
