Studio 200 is a dancer's hidden gem in San Francisco. Hands down the most beautiful floor I've ever danced on. The space is HUGE and could easily fit 30+ dancers with room to really move! Yet somehow no one seems to know it exists. I suppose that's why I can't even find it on Yelp!
Whenever I'm in town, I take modern with Mary Carbonara or Robert Moses.
I followed Mary from having taken class with her for a few years at Alonzo King Lines Ballet, where she still teaches one day a week and holds occasional workshops. I love her choreography, her warmup and progression through class challenges me while still being approachable and specific. I feel properly warmed and ready for the material she gives us, and I always leave class with a huge smile on my face.
I knew Robert's work and knew of his company before I ever met him, and felt honored to have the chance to dance with him. I've taken just a few classes with him, the first being a mishap when I arrived on a day class had technically been cancelled. Still he was there, and talked with me a while until we determined no one else was coming. I was disappointed we didn't dance, but it was so lovely having the opportunity to pick his brain a bit and tell him a little about myself and my experience in the (dance) world. A little celebrity interview of sorts, it was refreshing and invigorating to hear him talk about dance and it's worldly impact. The conversation we had was enough to walk away pretty happy that morning, but what made it even better was that Robert kindly offered a complimentary class next time I was in the studio (after all, I did travel all the way from NYC).
Studio 200 deserves to be loved on by hundreds of dancing feet every day, so get your butt in there! Just don't crowd me on the dance floor. :) read more
