Great yoga studio with friendly people and a wide variety of classes. Have been a member since it opened in January--highly recommended

This studio experience turned into a complete nightmare for me. The facility is filthy, smells like…read morecheap incense, and clearly doesn't meet basic health or safety standards. Every corner is covered in dirt and dust, and it feels completely neglected. The mold stench is in all of the bathroom facilities and locker rooms. The worst part was the low frequency atmosphere and lack of staff. The "instructor" Esther was aggressively rude and disrespectful. She locked us in the studio and refused to wait one minute for me to grab my bag after using the restroom. While I was washing my hands, she told me I should've just used the open showers--where several naked men were already showering or just standing around in their underwear on their cell phones. Absolutely NO privacy, NO boundaries, and NO policy to prevent public exposure or protect people's comfort. During class, a predator (male) was in nothing but see through underwear, and the instructor didn't even tell him how inappropriate this is for a public yoga class. This is simply not okay, considering this is expected to be a health and wellness experience. Nonetheless, this rotten place appears to be associated with Bikram Yoga, and if you haven't heard of the disturbing allegations behind it, I strongly encourage you to look it up. The culture at Movements reflects all the worst parts of that legacy. They merely disguise the names with "Hot C" and "Movements". Sincerely creepy, gross, and beyond frightening the demonic behavior Esther exhibited! I left feeling disrespected, unsafe, and honestly violated. Beware, consider your privacy and safety before stepping foot in this place.

For me in Amsterdam, this was the heated YogaFit 60 class at Movements with Lize, and it was incredible. Great, fun playlist: Sia and Spice Girls! YogaFit60 is like a Yoga Sculpt class (CorePower chain in US) for those unfamiliar. It combines yoga with light (or heavy) weights. Quite a few hardbodied gents in the class, which is always a welcome motivation boost. I found the class testing my limits, which was also welcome. The studio is gorgeous and has a tea nook. The actual practice rooms are located in an annex outside. The yoga room was spacious with mat and towels provided. Don't forget your complimentary coconut water with Yelp check-in!

I wasn't sure what to expect before arriving but I was blown away once I walked in. My welcome was warm and I immediately felt welcome into the space.. and what a space it is! The studio is gigantic, incredibly open and naturally (beautifully) lit with two yoga rooms (upstairs) with extra room outside to practice should the weather permit. They've put a lot of attention into the detail of the place and most importantly, into the details of the classes they provide and teach. There's plenty of space for people to sit, chill and vibe out, and there's even a small shop to buy sweet healthy nibbles if you're in the mood. Happy vibes all around here guys, namaste in the studio for the next little while.. ;)

Signing up for classes was very easy to do on line; a walk-in class is 10 euro, and the more you buy the less expensive it is. The studio provides a changing room and small lockers for personal belongings such as phones, wallets, and keys. Mats and any props you might need are also provided, which was great since I didn't want to bring my mat with me on the plane. The spaces are beautiful with lots of natural light and windows that open to allow breezes in. There are a variety of practices, from meditation to yin to vinyasa flow to 'power and play', with opportunities for arm balances and inversions if you choose. As special shout-out goes to Gregory, Beatrice, and Liisa, exceptionally gifted teachers who helped me feel welcome, comfortable, and challenged. Thank you for being my yoga home while in Amsterdam!

Alright. Phhooooooo....okay…read more I'm a stuck-up, super-spoiled, vegetarian-mega-brat. Why? I come from Los Angeles where if you want a macrobiotic, vegan, raw, super-green slice of ANYTHING, we've got it. It's pretty much amazeballs. Really. We do it up in California without any pretentious vibes at all. We're just super stoked to be healthy and that's that. Oh, we also like options. So, when I heard about Unlimited Health yesterday from my holistic masseuse (Massage Marin - I've reviewed her, she's ridiculously great), I was so pumped. Their website looks stellar - they have a cafe+juice bar+restaurant. Yoga and detox center, too, but I'm not a stretchy kind of gal. So, I grabbed a friend this morning, hopped on our bikes and rode over there, so elated for the insta-health we'd find here. The setting is bland. No music. Feels like a cold cafeteria in a hospital. Granted, it was only around 11:30am, so maybe the older women working there just don't know ambiance is a 24-7 kinda thing? Not sure. Anyway... The grocery store. It has a small, but neat assortment of raw snacks. An okay assortment of supplements. Water bottles. Green powders. Skin care. Okay, good. So, there's stuff I can buy to feel awesome. Oh, but wait. 10euros for 300 grams of a raw cereal? You're, like, kidding right? Right? 40euros for a small green powder. Um, you are SO funny, store! What a crackup. Right? Right? Bottom line: the concept is ok. However, you're getting ripped off. The same products in the US go for half the price. Maybe more. It's nice to have a small grocer with even more upscale raw/vegan, etc. products...but come on. Is the wallet-raping necessary? I left with some kale chips and a shot of wheatgrass. I'll go back. For Liquid Aminos. After my paycheck. ;)

A classic 90 minute, 105 degrees Fahrenheit (41 Celsius), 26 pose, Bikram sequence. Need to know: cash only! They teach in a mix of english and Dutch. Show up early to check in. The instructor likes to meet you and know your name. A friendly touch. I loved the blend of languages our instructor taught in. But if you're new to Bikram and/or yoga you should just be aware. Watch your fellow yogis and you'll be set. You must. Must. Wander to the back of the studio and dip your feet in the plunge pool in the back secret garden / zen space. It was the best surprise after sweating our butts off! Lovely staff. Lovely structured instruction. GORGEOUS unassuming studio space in the heart of Amsterdam. Next time I'm in town, this is a MUST! Yea, love that stuff, especially when it pours out of you and makes you work so hard. This location is in the De Pijp and well I was exploring in the area. It is a bit Bohemian so perfect place for a yoga studio. They also have a very famous tattoo parlor just a few doors down. How way cool! I arrived for the 8pm class and paid for my single class. This studio is a lot smaller than the sister one. The female changing room is really small and the showers and toilets are not in the changing room. They are in the hallway. The practise room is also smaller here, and the night I went, the studio was absoutely packed. Our instructor was Spanish, so she just taught the class in English but of course with a bit of a Spanish flare. She was very good and I got an excellent work out that night. It is just amazing that even after practising for over 5 years, you still learn something new, or that you realized all along your hand was in the wrong place. And then when you correct it, something actually stretches quite nice, and the tension is released. I really love that about all forms of yoga, in that it allows you to grow as you become more flexible. It really is about where you are, and how far you can stretch. No judgments, just do what you can, but only with you pushing yourself. I have to say that the night I went, it was extremely hot in the room and the instructor did not once even crack the door open just a little bit for some relief. At times like that, it really tests your patience with your body but most of all, with you mind. Both men on either side of me fell to their knees and had to rest. Wow, even strong grown men can succumb to Bikram...now that is powerful.
