i was going to write this review in danish to prove the good this school has done me, but i realized that may complicate things for someone looking for a good place to learn danish. it's good! i took evening courses twice a week, each class lasting 3.5 hours with a 15 minute break, and i got my prøve i dansk 3 certificate after a year and a half.
HOWEVER. i've had some strange experiences in this school.
my first teacher was very effective though very strict, and she seemed to be particularly hard on the one mexican girl in our class and later a black girl that joined in the next module. while we did conversational exercises, she walked around and listened in. during one of those she accused both of them of 'not doing the homework,' which is nonsense since i got together with the mexican girl previously during the week and did homework together with her. learning to pronounce danish is hard, but she was not so harsh with other (white) students who had problems with it. the black girl actually argued that she had in fact done the homework, which the teacher interpreted as backtalk and told her to leave the class. the girl refused to leave, as she had already been in the course for a few weeks and was pretty intent on learning danish, but our teacher threatened to cancel the rest of the class for that day if the girl didn't leave. talk about immature! the girl left for our sake, but she did file a complaint with administration .
another teacher made us do an exercise which was writing a sort of job application... for a cleaning job at a school. note that this was an evening class where many of us had jobs already, most with bachelor's or master's degrees. couldn't it have been for some other position? are they preparing us for reality in denmark? or maybe i am reading too far into it. this teacher also told me i would never be able to use the word "kedelig" for anything except "boring," though the word has several meanings. when i asked why, she said it is because i am not danish and no one will understand what i mean if i use it in another context. k, thx. /:
i am not saying this is a bad school! i have had some really good teachers here and made some great friends and of course learned the language as well. maybe this sort of thing happens at every danish language school? anyway, that was my experience, hope yours is better. read more
