I'm noticing it's not being kept very clean, with dust and dirt on the ground during an 8 am class. And unfortunately, I went to buy some Toesox today because they're Buy 1 Get 1 Free for a special promotion. I chose 4 pairs and the girl at the counter said they're making her charge for the most expensive pair and giving the cheapest thing for free. So where I would've paired my $24/$22 socks and my $18/$18 socks, she charged me $24 and gave me the $18 socks for free, and wanted to charge me $22 and give me the $18 socks for free. She said that was the policy Club Pilates is making them follow. I was already charged for the first set and let her know I didn't want the others. I was honestly really bummed! I'm a member and pay more than $110 a month for 4 classes so for Club Pilates to be so stingy to get just $4 more out of me is really disappointing. And making the front desk people be the one to deliver that, especially after I was already charged, is just a shame. When there are so many Pilates studios opening up nearby, I'd encourage Club Pilates to focus on their current customer base and service before folks go elsewhere.

After that, we were given a "tour" of the facility (shown the studio and the back room where the equipment was), and then we were told what equipment to grab and sent to claim spots in the studio. I was a little surprised that the intro didn't include the instructor talking about any physical limitations we might have, which the email said they would do. I have an old kneecap injury, but I know how to take care of it. After walking into the studio, someone (presumably another member?) immediately approached us and started asking questions. She asked if we knew the owner, we said no because it was our first class, and she said "oh you'll meet her soon" which . . . What? Then she asked if we liked to read, to which I said yes, but then she tried to get us to join her book club and shoved her phone into my hand saying "here! Give me your number!" I felt so uncomfortable and panicked and just gave her my number. For me, working out is really not a social outlet. I like for my workouts to be solitary. I don't want anyone to look at me or talk to me except for the coach. For that glorious hour, it's just me and the exercise. This immediately scared me that workouts would be a social event, which I'm not into. Then came the class. Pure Barre uses isometric exercises which I LOVE. I did ballet for a long time, so some of these movements felt very familiar to me, but lots of them were completely new too! One thing is I wish that the coach would demonstrate every move that we were doing instead of using words to describe it. Especially during the first class, it wasn't intuitive what we were supposed to be doing. While they assured us that this would get better class to class, I'm not convinced. I think that the hands on corrections were super helpful, but I also don't think they'd be effective in a full class, especially when we don't do an exercise for long enough for the coach to get to 10+ people, so I can't imagine learning and keeping good form in this environment. Another surprise was that at the beginning of the class, our coach said she'd be offering ways to make the exercises easier or more difficult throughout. She didn't once offer a way to make an exercise easier, it was all just challenges. I found the instructor to be super peppy, and it definitely detracted from my class experience, but that's more of a personal thing. As someone who works out in the morning, I like a no frills, straightforward coach, who just times us and corrects form as necessary. After class, this team made a hard sell. They supplied us with schedules and explained the different types of classes. Personally, I likely only would've been interested in the align and empower classes, which didn't work with my schedule, so membership didn't seem like a good investment for me. My friend was looking for something a little lower speed and lower stress, so she didn't sign up either. I think we both would've been more likely to give it a shot if there weren't a 3-month commitment. The crew at pure barre called me and texted me multiple times over the next few days. They were clearly driving a hard sell, but it wasn't the right time for me. There may be a time in the future when I'm more interested in the workouts they offer, but I feel that the culture of pure barre wasn't a good fit.

I've taken both types of classes - reformer and hot mat, and I enjoy them both for different reasons. I am constantly humbled in every class, and leave feeling like I had a great workout. I would not recommend the reformer classes to absolute beginners because the classes are fast paced and the reformer machines have a lot of working parts and can be overwhelming at first. Sometimes the music and the instructor's microphone are too loud but that seems to happen more often in the reformer room than in the hot mat room. The majority of the instructors here are friendly, but I have experienced one or two classes where the instructor wasn't very polite or patient (and seemed to get frustrated when I didn't understand her cues for switching positions on the reformer and raised her voice). I love the music and the lighting and I enjoy the workouts.
