The litmus test of the cost of beer ($5 for Mythos) passed (not $7 like DC). Unfortunately, a half of the fun is opening the bottle and having it there, but at this festival it had to be poured in the plastic cup by the bar personnel. The food was good. The Greek Ladies have prepared their authentic Greek fare using recipes passed down from generation to generation and producing a menu of Greek favorites like, Moussaka, Pastitsio, Manestra, and Spanakopita as well as succulent Greek pastries such as, Baklava, Galaktobouriko, Diples and Kourambiethes. Unfortunately, the cost was sometimes not justified - $4 for a small hand of the french fries is a lot - even it is "for the church." The picture shows two portions of french fries that I combined in one. The Greek sausages did not meet my expectations - yes, they were lemony and a lot of spice in them but the consistency was too soft and the final mix of taste was not impressive. Not much choice in the deserts department but the credit goes to cook for the excellent Galaktobouriko and Kataifi desserts. There was not any entertainment program going on for 60 minutes I spent there and that was a big downside, where on the other festival you have either bigger market (Bethesda) or non-stop entertainment (Annapolis). The average crowd was mostly retirees but never the less more diverse then at many other festivals. There is no entrance fee and the parking is free.

Songkran Festival serves hands down the best food of all the festivals the area holds every year…read more The festival celebrates the Thai New Year, which is the 13-15 of every April. Unlike all the other festivals such as Fiesta Asia, Adams Morgan Day Festival, Fiesta DC, Greek Festival, etc, Songkran is catered mainly to Thais and actually serve very authentic Thai food. There are all kinds of food that you won't find in area Thai restaurants. One of my favorites is the Nam Kao Tod, which is a huge seasoned ball of rice, pork and tripe, fried, then broken up and mixed with chili, lime juice, red onions and cilantro. It is entirely street food but unbelievably flavorful. The Sakoo Sai Moo, tapioca flour balls filled with pork, is also fantastic. The lady that sells the Nam Kao Tod also makes papaya salad fresh from scratch, which is a must if you're a fan. I would also suggest getting there early to get in line for the stall that sells the different kinds of meat braised in a big pot because they tend to run out by 1pm. Another stall sells grilled squid on skewers that look delicious but they are so popular that they tend to under-cook the squid so in my opinion it is not worth waiting in line for half an hour for. For people that are not adventurous, there are 2-3 stalls that sell grilled chicken/beef/pork on a stick, which I think are not worth getting. For dessert, one stall sells little balls of fried sweet potatoes that are divine. And you can never go wrong with mango sticky rice. Food is reasonably priced, for most dishes you pay $5 and get quite a bit of food. There are also stalls that sell Thai music, movies, clothing and accessories. The stage in the center of the festival has performances of Thai dances and Muay Thai.

What a fun and deeply meaningful festival! Whether you are looking to attain more literacy in…read moreUkrainian culture or to connect with what you already know, this event offers that! There are musical and dance performances -- with the singers, dancers, and presenters being decked out in Ukrainian-style clothes -- savoury and sweet foods, and vendors selling clothing, paintings, and all kinds of arts and little souvenirs ... not to mention an indoor exhibit about the war and several areas for photo-taking with beautifully arranged fabrics, flowers, wheat, and other traditional Ukrainian garments and objects. Not only that, but everyone is friendly and caring, making for a real community feel. I went all three days! It was not boring for one second. It's also a nice open space in which to walk around, to wander and browse, see cute kids and dogs, and sit at a blue tablecloth-covered table and eat while gazing at the fresh yellow flowers in the centre .... If you happen to attend wearing the yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag, you will be in great company! Looking for some vyshyvanka? There are shirts for women, men, and children plus dresses and vests .... Plush of Mriya, ducks with little vests, keychains, bracelets, and so much more is available! So many of the arts and crafts were made by people who are at the festival themselves so you can meet the artists, and sometimes the wares are being sold by the crafter's family members. It's a real family event! Hairbands with flowers (vinok), hand-painted wooden hair clips, dolls, socks, tie-on pockets -- so many things it's a stretch to remember, let alone list them all! One might say this is a festival filled with much 'eye candy!' A feast for the eyes! A feast, in fact, for ALL of the senses! Many of the vendors are raising money for non-profits, too -- and the festival itself is a fundraiser, an awareness-raiser, and I'd say it's an aesthetic sense-raiser, too!

My most recent visit was during their 99th year, held on Tuesday July 23, 2019. Parking is free and is located on the grounds next to the Thrift Store and across the street from the Hospital (you may have to park on the hilly grassy areas if you arrive later in the day). There are several parking attendants directing you on where to park once you get on Prince Philip Drive. There is something for everyone at this festival and they are all at a minimal price. In 2019 they had: An area for kids with Pony Rides - there were 2 ponies, Inflatable rides (each manned by an attendant); Books, CD's and DVD's all sorted in different categories - these tents were rather popular. From what I remember, the prices were between $1 to $2 each. Some the books I purchased were in great condition. Most others were in average to great condition; Antiques was in a separate tent from the one with Jewelry. The Jewelry tent is quite popular as well - folks will line up in the rain for this tent to open up. They had everything from necklaces, earrings, rings, watches, scarves, etc. Plants / Fresh Produce / Framed Art - all in their own separate tents. Stuffed Animals - some of which were Beanies. All between $1 to $2 each and there were many. We purchase one or two a few years back. Games - I saw lots of board games, card games and lots of jigsaw puzzles. If there were pieces missing for a game, it would be listed on the game. The prices were listed as well. Prices looked between $1 to $2 each. Bakery - where folks made bakery items and they were available for sale / Ice Cream - there were selling 3 different types of the novelty ice cream / Drinks - I can't remember if anything else was sold other than sodas. Food - you can get Fried Chicken (they are known for having good fried chicken each year), Corn on the Cob, Fruit cups, Wings, Roll, pulled beef, Hamburger/Hot Dog and there is even a Vegetarian Wrap available for purchase. There are times when I have been in the line for food and it was very long, but everyone waited patiently - they also provide lots of tables and chairs for you to eat your food. Entertainment is also available for watching as well. You could also enter a raffle ($5 per ticket) and for the choice of prizes that you get to pick from (if you won), it is totally worth it, plus it is going towards a good cause. You do not have to be present for when they select the winning raffle tickets. The festival reminds me of a gathering of a community - everyone relaxing and just having a good 'ole time. I am already looking forward to when they will have their 100th Women's Board Picnic & Bazaar (in 2020) as they will probably go all out for that and then some.

We were so lucky he agreed to drive well outside of his usual area to perform. His illusions were mesmerizing, and he expertly handled a room full of inquisitive and skeptical kids by getting most of them involved in his performance. He gave a great message in the end of the performance also, drawing on the themes of inclusion and acceptance from the Harry Potter stories, which the adults present also mentioned as being a highlight.
