The tea room is housed in the old boiler room of Smeaton House (now sadly long gone). It is not smart but it is very relaxed and cosy, the staff are always very friendly and helpful, and the baking never disappoints. I also really like the fact that the nursery is just that wonderful plants, none of the usual 'garden centre' ephemera. The nursery staff are also extremely welcoming. I recommend Smeaton unreservedly except that I don't want it to become too popular as I love its peaceful atmosphere!

The cabin is kept warm in winter with a feature stove fireplace and the owner is equally as welcoming. We fancied a snack, so opted for homemade soup with crusty bread. One of the party had a cheese & spring onion toastie - good uncomplicated fare. For afters, Mum had the Meringue with a pot of Earl Grey. Being more of a savoury fella overall, I don't often go in for cakes etc, but I decided to try the Apple & Cinnamon Scone with Butter & Jam. It was delicious, I have to say. They are expanding at the moment to allow more visitors to the cafe. Given the quality of the food, I think this will prove popular with ramblers and those looking for somewhere to relax that's a little bit different from the norm.

This place is awesome…read more I have NEVER seen a garden center this large, and I'm from the land of large things. I recently became a homeowner with a bigass garden. This baby's huge. In that garden lives a greenhouse. In that greenhouse lives about 30 tomato plants, four cucumber plants, two strawberry, and various herbs. I'm not taking the gardening thing lightly, clearly. I got everything I needed for my garden here. The staff were helpful and chatty, and their pricing holds up to the exacting standards of my retired accountant father in law, which is saying a LOT. They have a garden club for £10 where you get a £5 discount card and then 10% off all plant purchases, as well as vouchers for their cafe. I'm not sure if it would be useful for me beyond this year when I'm starting up, but 10% can go a long way when you are building a garden from scratch. So, I'm thrilled to have this place 'round the corner from my house and I'll be visiting as often as The Man allows me to run away from steaming wallpaper. Plus, there are highland coos who live down the way from the garden center, which makes it even cooler.

It is one of the most pleasant places I have ever been for a peaceful cup of coffee. The coffee shop itself is in a log cabin in one corner of the garden. it is a reasonably new building, but sits well with the ambience of the rest of the garden. There are bird feeders outside one of the windows, providing hours of entertainment watching the numerous birds. The furnishings are aged pine tables and chairs. There is a woodburning stove and bookcases with books/magazines on gardening and cooking. The menu is very small, 2 soups, the variety of which changes daily, half a dozen different kinds of sandwich with interesting fillings, and about a dozen different kinds of cake. All the produce is homemade on the premises and is delicious. Many of the ingredients are organic and local. I love Woodside - just the place for recharging the batteries.
