Ordered the Rueben. Tasted fine...the amount of meat was kinda skippy compared to some, but more then other Rueben's I have had. The servers were well schooled, taking care and made sure we were satisfied. Great patio area with live music starting at 6:00. Cold weather would limit the overall seating capacity. Flights weren't available for some reason or another. But if you want a sampler of the different brews, just buy a mix and match six-pack for later. read more

A much better tour than we had at Victory Brewery in Philly area. The guide was young, can't remember her name but she knew the whole process inside and out. I am a home-brewer and I couldn't stump her, not that I was trying to. When touring Victory, the guide there didn't know much and I wound up giving most of the tour. Straub is very small in size and operations but all employees we met and observed were very courteous and friendly. The endless taps were a nice touch to experience by letting guests sample from 3 varieties of brew. You were able to have 2 full sized cups, not a 4 ounce taster. In the bar/restaurant there were multiple choices of brews on tap or canned/bottled and a vast selection of mementos for the collectors. We didn't eat there as we had packed a picnic lunch for later, but the food we were smelling was very enticing. We want to return for one of the weekend parties they have in their courtyard. It was so nice to finally visit the Straub Brewery, and even nicer to sit outside in November! We had a great waitress and got to enjoy all the scenes of the property. My husband loved getting a flight of pick any of your four favorite beers! For food, we kinda ordered a little bit of couple things and shared everything. We ordered the bbq pulled pork Mac n cheese and the beef on weak with the homemade sausage potato and cabbage soup. The soup and homemade croutons were the shunning stars of the meal...so amazing! The Mac n cheese was really good. I loved the cooked onion straws, but I might have like just a little more sauce. The sandwich was also good...homemade horseradish was ridiculous...the meat was just a little dry. All in all it was a wonderful Saturday afternoon, and we can't wait to go back! read more

We went there hoping to take the tour and then get lunch. My husband has mobility issues and we were told the tour has lots of stairs, so we decided to skip that. We went into the Tap room for some lunch. The waitress came over to get our drink orders and told us about their special features for the day, their stuffed pretzels and the soup of the day, sauerkraut soup. I asked about what was in the pretzels. "Jalapenos in one and cream cheese in the other." The menu says 2 for $12, so I asked what was the Special price. "Oh it's still $12. they aren't on sale we are just featuring them". I found that sort of deceptive. Then I asked if we could get 1 of each flavor. She couldn't answer the question, had to run to the kitchen. No, both had to be the same flavor. So we got the Jalapeno which was supposed to have cheese too. When they came, we broke one open, looking for the filling. There was a tunnel, but really no filling. As we broke more of it open, we did find small amounts of the filling, but for the most part, both pretzels were empty. Then I asked about the sauerkraut soup, what's in it? Again, she had to run to the kitchen again. I thought this was pretty bad, 2 questions to the waitress, and she couldn't answer either one without going to the kitchen. We went ahead and ordered a couple sandwiches. I got the Panini with pulled pork, cheddar cheese, husband got the Cuban with the way it's listed on the menu, ham, pulled pork, sweet pickles, etc. They both came with a side, chips and a pickle spear. The sides we chose were the sauerkraut soup for me, chili for him. They were cups, not bowls, very small. When the sandwiches came, my so-called Panini was plain white bread, grilled on a flat-top, not a Panini press. (No grill marks of any kind visible on the bread). The pulled pork was poorly seasoned, very little flavor, and not there was very little of it, it didn't come close to even covering a thin layer on the bread. My husband's Cuban didn't really have much more meat, even thought it was supposed to have 2 kinds of meat. And the chips were sure nothing special. In a day when so many little places are making homemade chips, they use the lunch size bag of Lays potato chips. He had 2 bottles of beer, I had water. Our bill was just a few cents shy of $58.00 (included the tip for a waitress who really didn't deserve much of a tip). Neither of us felt like the meal was not worth it. We don't plan to ever go back unless we find out they have made changes. School the wait staff better, and let's give the customer enough meat on their sandwiches that we don't have to look for it. Oh and how about some seasoning on the meat too. ONE MORE THING, A BUSINESS SHOULD NOT TALK ABOUT WHICH CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT THEY LIKE. I OVERHEARD HER TELLING SOMEONE SHE LIKED HIS MAGA HAT. An excerpt from my book going LOCAL! When a family has been making something for 135 years, you've got to assume that they must know what there doing. If what that family's been doing is brewing good beer, and that beer is sugar free, salt free, preservative free and carries the motto "Honestly Fresh," there's just no assuming. And if they have something that to my knowledge no other brewery in the world has, you've got to know about it. Like my friends at Tröegs, Straub Brewery is not a restaurant, pub or café. However, that "something" they have that no other has, allows you and me to taste the goodness of their beer fresh from the source anytime we want and whenever they're open - totally complimentary. This something is the famous Eternal Tap. Ah, The Eternal Tap. My first recollection of this bottomless well of fermented goodness flows from the stuff of urban legend and lore swirling in the imagination of a teenaged boy. As a youth growing up in central PA, I would imagine a brewery where they had a beer tap sticking out through the wall of the building and old dudes would hang out there all day drinking for free. It never ran out and was always on - 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I would imagine endless summer days, with chairs and tables placed in groups around the tap. The dudes would play cards or chess, drinking glass after glass under the shade of a grand oak and everyone having a good ol' time and no one ever getting drunk. Unfortunately, my dreams where shattered one Sunday afternoon when my riding buddies and I rolled up to Straub Brewery and not a soul was to be found - no gathering of gentlemen playing chess under a canopy of green, no laughter and spinning of tales and most sadly, no spigot sticking out of the wall with a continuous flow of beer. My friends watched as I stood silent in the parking lot. Now years later, after having scouted out pub after pub where they proudly serve Straub, I met a forth generation Peter Straub at a PSU tailgate party. He offered me a beer and gave me a name of someone to contact at the brewery. So I made a call up to Saint Mary's and arranged a meeting with the guy named Dan. When I arrived on a chilly morning in September aboard The Steed, steam was rising from the brewery, men and trucks were moving about and the distinct smell of fermenting mash was in the air. This time they were open. This time The Eternal Tap, if it even existed, would mine. When I walked into the small office I was greeted by Dan Straub, President, who is one of 80 some Straub family members who still claim their beer making heritage with pride. Dan loves his brewing legacy, he loves his community that supports him, and he is proud of that fact that his small family brewery has lasted so long. "It's an amazing success story when you see how few breweries are left that has stood the test of time." At that, Dan asked if I wanted to try his beer. I think he wanted me to taste the pride, to taste how fresh and how good his beer really was. And he invited me to taste it at its source - the enigmatic and haloed Eternal Tap. Finally! After all these years, all the daydreams and despite disappointment, I was finally going to partake. Not only that, but I would partake with the president of the company - the great, great grandson of the founder himself. I was tingling with excitement and anticipation as we walked out of his office, down a short hallway of memorabilia and into the keg room. There, sticking out of the wall (just like I imagined) were two (regular and light), plainly appointed, but absolutely beautiful tap heads (I swear there was a glow around them). Dan walked up, picked up a glass and asked which one I wanted. I didn't even hesitate and picked the regular. He pulled back on the handle and sweet Straub beer flowed out into the glass, forming a snow white head over a golden body. Dan handed it to me and drew one for himself. He raised his glass and made a humble toast to life and beer. At that, I put the glass to my lips and drank in 135 years of hard work, pride, success of a small mountain brewery and the goodness of a locally made beer. And let me tell you, urban legend, lore and my imagination did not equal this moment or the taste that flowed so smoothly over my tongue. Straub beer is good, damn good and Honestly Fresh! Straub Brewery is a small family brewery still making beer the way it was intended by Peter Straub over a century ago ("honestly fresh, fiercely independent"). There's history here and even if you're not a fan of the beer you have to respect the tradition. The brewery offers tours (I was there on a Tuesday for the 10:30am tour). The tour of the brewery provided a history of their process and some fun stories (brownies vs greenies!) and lasts about an hour. Be warned, you walk up and down quite a few flights of stairs for the tour. There is a small gift shop on site where you can buy the usual brewery souvenirs along with bottles of beer. Straub continues their tradition of the classic lager line (no added sugar, salt or preservatives) and they've also expanded to a signature line of beers for the ever changing beer market. It's good to see that even with age Straub understands the need for additional new products. The best part of Straub Brewery though is the Eternal Tap. Anyone from anywhere can come in to the brewery and enjoy a complimentary beer from the tap (2 beer limit). The tap does not appear to be well supervised so they expect you to be honest in exchange for their generous hospitality. They just ask that you wash your glass. Even if you don't have time for the tour (which lasts 60-90 minutes depending on your tour guide, the size of your group and any questions asked) make time to stop by for a cold one from the source. So I stopped in to Straubs this Saturday for a quick visit and a beer at the eternal tap. You walk past a gift shop and up some stairs right to the brewery and bam, there it is. The eternal tap was actually about 5 taps and a few bottled beers in a bucket of ice. There weren't any employees around, which was kinda weird but whatever. A handful of people just stood around drinking free beer samples from the tap. I liked the double bok and the lager myself. They also had Amber in tap. The beer was good and cold, two thumbs up. There are no tours on Saturday unless you make an appointment. I didn't, so no tour for me. No worries, on the way out we stopped by the gift shop and bought a glass and bottle opener. WOWWWWW. I am in love and only wish we lived so much closer! Unfortunately the Eternal Tap wasn't available when we visited, but the beer was so delicious! We tried a few and they all were amazing. So crisp and refreshing. The place was booked and we requested to sit on the hill behind the patio, and I dare say, we had the best seats in the house to enjoy the lovely summer evening and FANTASTIC live music. Matt Silvia was playing from a local town, and had some people joining in and harmonizing, and they were awesome. We ordered the soft pretzel which came with beer cheese and mustard, it was huge and we ate it all. We shared the brat and potato salad, and they were both sooo good. We were too full to even finish so we ate the brat for breakfast the next morning. It was great! We took some beer to go, and will hopefully find their beer at our local beer distributer here in town. The gift shop was super neat, lots of info about the brewery history. Great family owned regional brewery - the third oldest family owned brewery in the US. The "eternal tap" is unique ( first I've seen after visiting well over 200 breweries over the last 25 years)! The tour starts at the eternal tap on the ground floor and goes up to the top of the brewery (many steps with no elevator) and follows down using gravity as much as possible - remember this brewery is almost 150 years old! The tour guide was a part time employee (full time nurse), but did a fairly good job explaining the brewery history and the nuances of brewing done by the Straub brewers. The owners are in the process of building a visitor center a couple hundred feet from the old building, which is where the tours will start and the gift shop will be located. But do not fear, the eternal tap will not be relocated. Straub is experimenting with newer craft style beers, which are quite tasty. Also, we learned that their canned beer, which is currently contract brewed and canned by Genese Brewing in upstate NY, will be brewed and canned in the old brewery in the near future. They are currently in the process of modifying the shipping area for their canning equipment. All in all this is a stop any beer "affectianado" must complete. read more

The review covers the "American Lager" only. This beer is totally without a depth of flavor on any level. Poured into a proper glass it yields no head. It's really quite awful and I'm sorry I purchased it. I have offered it to a few friends and none have requested a second bottle. Atmosphere is great. Can sit at the bar, a table inside or a table on the outdoor patio. Small menu with a great taste. Portions are a bit small but so are the prices. By the smell of things they smoke their meat for the sandwiches on site. Good size tap selection of beer and prices are very affordable. Small gift shop on premises and six packs to go. Great people who make great beer. Tours of the Straub brewery are limited to 15 people at a time. That's a good thing, because Straub is a small brewery, and you really get to see things up close. I love Straub beer--it's smooth and ultra-fresh with no additives or added sugar. We got to try a Straub "greenie" (in the green bottle) fresh off the line; the bottle had just been filled, and wasn't even capped or labeled. It's no exaggeration to say it was the best beer I've ever tasted...fresh as mountain spring water indeed. Our tour guide was very nice and knowledgeable. And, of course, we had our refreshment at the Eternal Tap (remember to wash your glass). The tour ended with a visit to the gift shop. If you love beer made the old fashioned way by good ol' Pennsylvania folks, you'll love this tour. read more

Oh what a glorious place! Straub beer is one of my favorites, and I am happy I have finally made it to it's birthplace. Nestled in a lazy little mountain town, they keep pumping out some of the best beer I have tasted. All natural and I swear that keeps any hangover to a minimum. I have not tried the Straub light, however the regular Straub's and Straub Special Dark are great. You can get a brewery tour here or you can simply come in and grab a few beers from the eternal tap. I have to say I was a little disappointed when I actually kicked the keg on the regular Straubs, but the special dark was flowing. Another cool thing about this brewery, is I believe it is the last brewery in the United States to still sell beer in returnable bottles. If you are anywhere near Saint Mary's and are a connoisseur of beer, this place is a must stop! read more

I have been a life long proud Straub Beer advocate. The people that work there are great. The traditional brews are a constant in my fridge. The IPL, Maibock, and 1872 are a great addition to the line up. I've even used the 1872 as an ingredient in sauces at my Resturant and my guests love it. I'm currently working on a bbq sauce with the IPL. I love making beer cocktails with all the different varieties. Visiting the brewery and the eternal tap is always fun and I love bringing my out of town guests along. I honestly can't think of a single negative thing to say about Straub brewery.
