A bit of a dark basement tavern feel, especially at the front of the house. Not sure about the back dining room as I did not explore that area. I was seated at a booth which I did not mind, good view of the bar area and TVs from there. Place was half full and not loud at all. Drink order was taken quickly and served promptly despite there being only 1 person serving! She took my food order as well and I did not have to wait long despite the large parties being served in the few other full tables in the restaurant. I ordered the steak demonico and a side salad. No complaints there, steak was cooked to my specification and the added peppers and onions were tasty, mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious, veggies were great too. "Gunners: Eat, Drink, Sleep"...a motto I can live with, especially when the food and service are this good. In this small town of 12,000 in north central PA, Gunners was named for the guns sold to local hunters by the owners of Ammo and Arms when those owners branched out into the restaurant business in 2004. New owners took over in 2013 and have aimed to transform the local sports bar into an establishment with much wider appeal. Today, Gunners offers both the burger & a beer (from Straubs Brewery just down the street) all the way up to fine dining for both locals and travelers alike. Here on business, several locals recommended that we dine at Gunners over a more upscale Italian alternative...good call! With the wise guidance of our cheerful server Tabitha, our group of three ordered a Delmonico Steak, a Honey Glazed Salmon and a Tuna Catch. Each entree far surpassed our expectations in quality and taste. Straub Brewery's various selections on draft perfectly complimented our dinner choices. OK . . . I have a wild hair about moving to the PA wilds . . . or technically buying a second/vacation home or some big piece of property where I can commune with nature and get away from it all. I've been looking for a while, but some of the places closer to State College are surrounded by strip mines . . . so, we decide to go further north than ever before and head up to see what's exciting in the St. Marys area. This included looking at a house in Kane, PA. Apparently there is NOTHING to do in these two cities. Multiple locals confirmed it for us. HOWEVER, in St. Mary's we did find this neat little restaurant that is also an Inn (hotel). St. Marys is quaint . . . but it's big enough to have a WalMart. We sat in the lounge area which includes a bar and a large area with tables. If you go past the bar, you will find the fancier Piano Room that is done in reds and blacks, has a little grand piano, and has walls graced with blown up old photos of old time musicians and actual musical instruments fastened to the walls. Very nice . . . and per the locals . . . the only nice restaurant in town. Apparently, the lounge area is formally called the "Neighborhood Lounge" which seemed to be an accurate moniker because many of the patrons knew each other and the staff knew many of the patrons. Definitely a small town vibe . . . even though St. Marys is not tiny . . . just small. Being a wing girl, I opted to try the Parmesan Pepper version. A one pound order ($4.99) includes 8 wings (4 of those drumstick types and 4 of those middle sections). They were will fried and were lightly doused with a garlicky butter sauce, peppercorns, and some Parmesan. Not bad. I didn't like the burnt garlic flavor at the beginning but at the end I found myself using my finger to pick up the little peppercorns and not wanting to miss a speck of the butter sauce. The hubby tried the "Jesse James" sandwich - which he LOVED. It was a large pile of thinly sliced prime rib on a soft bun. It was covered with mozzarella. He asked for a side of horseradish with it, but he liked the sandwich so much, he only used the horseradish as a way to dip his chips. Sandwich was about $7.99 - I can't find a menu listing for sandwiches on their site and they didn't have a take home menu so I'm guessing on the price. The kids split Gunner's "new" mini-taco appetizer. For less than $6.00 the kids split an order which included about 10 tiny fried tacos. They tasted like taquitos (corn filled with bean/meat and fried). They offered several sauces and the kids opted for ranch dressing and that toxic orange squeeze cheese stuff. They weren't thrilled with the food - but then again they don't get much junk food. Their menu has a lot of the standard "American fare" similar to the mid-level chains like Applebees. However, they do a significant amount of cooking with cedar planks. If you haven't done cedar plank foods you are seriously missing. And they have some interesting things I had never seen before. I don't know how often we'll get there, but I'd definitely go back. The next time I want to try their more upscale entrees. Their menu has a sort of "gun" theme (possibly inspired by the Gunner name?). They have a side dish called Ruger Fries - I'm interested to know what that means (I know a Ruger is a gun, but what does it mean to be a Ruger fry?) I also tried a sample of something they call the Jimmy Buffet Stew - it's like a thick cheese- based soup with hamburger, potatoes, and spices. (Get it? Cheeseburger In Paradise? Jimmy Buffet?) It tasted a little like hamburger helper . . . but interesting and not expensive. If I'm back there with the kids it's what I'll order for them the next time. Overall, I'll give this two thumbs up. I sorta feel stupid because I didn't read the reviews here before I went.But my sister wanted to go.So,what's you do. We all had their prime rib special. It was the worst prime rib I have ever had. The meat was so tough the we struggle to chew it. Service was bad. The bar maid was good . Once I found her. The bartender blew me off when I first ordered only because he was making a cocktail for another patron which obviously he was struggling to make. It's sad that out of four prime rib orders all cooked from rare to medium well not one was edible. Sad. I am only given it a 1 star because you can't rate it any lower. read more

In town for business. Walking distance from my hotel (and many others)... This place was great! Very good selection of craft, beers and cocktails. Bartender was attentive and informative. I had my mind made up going in that it was just going to be an appetizer and a beer. However, the Delmonico special caught my eye. Cooked correctly and seasoned perfectly. I used to frequent this area for work and I've eaten here atleast a dozen times. Surprisingly, my favorite thing on the menu is their grilled salmon - it is probably my favorite restaurant (other than Bonefish Grill) to get it at. Literally every time I have it, it comes out perfectly cooked and seasoned. I've tried a few other menu items as well, including their burgers, a few pasta dishes, and a loaded chicken breast. Everything is pretty good. Although this is pretty much the only nicer restaurant in the area, it's worth a stop. Prices are on-par with what I'm used to paying, but granted I live in a bigger city with a variety of dining options. Might be a little pricey compared to other restaurants in the area, but it's worth it. As far as the staff, they're usually standoff-ish and don't seem to care about serving most people except for the locals at the bar. I quickly learned that you'll get service much faster sitting at the bar instead of sitting at a table. The actual restaurant is pretty outdated and doesn't seem like much, but the food makes up for that. read more

I've been to Gunners several times. I would stick with the burgers and sandwiches on the menu. The one time I ordered an entree, it was terrible. I ordered a chicken breast with sauteed spinach, and for some reason it came with a puddle of butter in the dish in which it was served. I mean, butter is great - but let's not go over board. Service is spotty. Sometimes its quick and pleasant, others its unbearably slow. There are not many options for dining in St. Marys, so this will probably remain a staple, but it's not the best either. A colleague of mine from out of town stayed in the hotel once because the other two chain hotels in town were booked up. He said it was sketchy at best. read more

Not sure where else to review this since Gunners is only listed as a restaurant on Yelp, but we stayed in the motel above the restaurant while on a road trip and it was perfectly adequate. The staff were incredibly nice and hospitable. The room was dated and a little dingy, but it was honestly the cleanest motel I've stayed at in recent memory. Literally spotless. The shower was hard to figure out, but so CLEAN. We could hear other guests in the hallway, and we could hear someone's phone ringing in the middle of the night, which was frustrating. We didn't dine at the restaurant, but there are tons of other food options nearby. Because of covid, breakfast was in a first-floor guest room converted into a lovely breakfast room. Perfectly clean, lots of choices, single-serving pre-packaged items available. It was very thoughtful. This isn't upscale by any means, but if you're just looking for a comfortable, covid-friendly place to stay for the night, this is a nice choice. read more

This review is only about the bar area, not the dining room. Over the years, 20 or so, my family has frequented Gunner's bar. I personally don't know what draws anyone here. It's not very clean. The main exit area is always blocked by customers. I think, not sure, that they have a wait staff. The staff never waits tables. Instead you have to belly up to a crowded bar and wait for several minutes for a bartender to notice you. If there was a bar in Saint Marys that cared about its customers, Gunner's ain't the one. I really dislike this place. But, my family seems to tolerate Gunner's lack of customer service. read more

Gunners is probably one of the nicer places to eat in Saint Marys, and if you are looking for a drink they have that too. Any time that I have eaten here the food has been very good. The people manning the bar are usually really good, but the wait staff for tables can be a bit odd (and absent minded). Still if you are looking for a burger and a beer this is the place; if you are looking for a steak and a glass of red wine this is also your place. It should be noted at the time of this review they have stopped serving lunch. read more

We were just driving through st Mary's and hungry. Using yelp, we selected Gunners. Broad menu of avg fair. I had the elk hunter burger and my wife the corn chowder. Neither were special, but both were good. My potato wedges were mixed. A few burned, again nothing special, but good. We didn't try the seafood and stakes, which are supposed to be better. read more

I used to enjoy this place; however, they raised their prices while serving the same quality of food. I ordered a $16 burger and it was not cooked to my order. I don't mind that they raised their prices, as they are trying to be the "fancier" option in town, but they better at least cook my $16 burger to order. Excellent food severely marred by poor management. Four of us went for dinner Saturday night September 29. We were seated at 730pm. Excellent menu. Even better craft beer list! We ordered drinks, one order of fried calamari, and four entrees. Our doe eyed waitress Natalie was stressed with a 20 top in the main room and with the four of us in the back room. Needless to say the wait for her was often terrible. We didn't leave until 1030pm...three hours later. First, they were out of the beer we ordered from the craft menu. But we had to wait for her to come back and tell us. Next...they were out of three of the entrees we ordered. You're correct...we had to wait for her to come back to tell us. In fact...one of the entrees was the Saturday night special....and it was still listed on the board at the restaurant entrance when we left! This place is in desparate need of a restaurant makeover! The decor is terribly dated and the food (from a menu that sounded really interesting) was mediocre at best. I find it inexcusable to serve generic crinkle cut french fries with a $20+ steak entree, and our other side (cheddar jalepeno mashed potatoes) was a gray, sour, mushy mess that tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for days. The bar and kitchen were also extremely slow, although our server was really nice and apologetic. read more

The Shrimp Alfredo was pretty good and a HUGE portion. There aren't many eateries in St. Mary's and this one is a throwback to the 1990's, but the food is decent. I would definitely eat there again. Made reservations with my boyfriend's family to gather at Gunners. We told them when making reservations that we were going to have 10 people. So on the phone they told us we were going to have to have a limited menu for a party of 10 or more. When we started showing up for our reservation only 7 or 8 of us showed up. They still gave us the limited menu. My boyfriend and I ordered the whisky barrel steak and there wasn't much there at all. Food was good and all but paying almost $60 for 2 meals that you don't feel full after eating is ridiculous. I also heard that they raised they're prices recently with the same portions. The only reason I gave them an extra star is because they have a wide variety of beer. I don't think I'll be eating here anytime soon. read more

We have been coming here for years and I have never had a bad meal. Favorite menu items are the steaks or Ahi Tuna (App menu). The craft beer selection is one of the best in town with a few rotating draft choices and a decent bottle selection. They have two seating areas: The bar area and the Piano Room area. The latter is the best choice for more intimate meals and business meetings. The bar area can get noisy, especially on weekends. There aren't many choices around here when it comes to sit down restaurants. This one should be at the top of your list. read more

If i could give the place negative stars i would. The only thing good was the waitress. I ordered the cowboy steak extra rare which i can only assume is to cook the hell out of it for 45 minutes. The calamari must have had the salt shaker fall all over it and for being steak night i received free shrimp cocktail in which i must say, I never ate tasteless shrimp jerky before. So I've been here a dozen times and the drinks are awesome and the bartenders are wonderful! My waitress and bartender tonight Ashley was amazing and talkative and attentive! But I've had issues with the food. Every time I've gone I have had one item burnt to where it was inedible. Waffle fries last visit, and this time my chicken was visibly burnt and my waffle fries had a few bad ones but that was tolerable. I didn't eat my chicken and when Ashley took my food she saw I was unsatisfied and I told her why I didn't eat it. She was completely understanding and so kind! Immediately said she would bring me new ones. The runner Sam came out and was rude and was rolling her eyes. I could see her through the door as she was throwing a little fit. Extremely rude and a total put off. I've been here many times and tonight will be the last. All the staff has always been so nice so why they'd hire someone with such a bad attitude I do not know. Totally disappointed considering the owner is a good friend of my fathers and a really awesome guy. Lackluster service at best, down right rude at times. If you're looking for a nice place to have lunch or dinner with your significant other, or family, keep looking. If you're looking for a place with food that will make you want another drink so you forget what you're eating- you've found it in Gunners. Long waits to be seated, have your order taken, get drinks, get your food, get your check- you get the idea. I'm sure it might have promise as a spot to go sit at the bar and get hammered- but that's not my thing. Things are not fresh, not well cooked, and just generally a really half-assed attempt at a restaurant. Maybe they should have stuck with being an inn, or a bar, clearly they don't know what they're doing in the restaurant arena. So.... two thumbs down for me. We showed up on a Saturday evening at about 7pm. There were 4 adults and 6 kids. They had to set tables up for the 10 of us which they did rather quickly and we were seated with menus in hand. After mauling over the menu of all the choices and the kids trying to figure out what they wanted, I realized i was a little thirsty. I looked around and there were other tables being attended to. It wasn't overly busy. There were still empty tables in the dining room. After setting for half an hour without even getting drinks, we gathered up the kids and left. I'm not even sure they ever noticed we were gone. The food sounded good. We saw some burgers going by to other tables which looked good. The prices for some seemed a little high but I don't mind if you get what you paid for. Just sad that I'll never know. I noticed the last review said the wait staff was a little absent minded. You'd think they would notice 10 people setting at a table for that long. That's 10 dinners, drinks, deserts and tip. Money lost but i'm sure Pizza Hut didn't mind. Probably within 20 minutes we were actually eating. I hate that one bad experience would draw an opinion but come on. A table for 10 people. I won't be returning to find out if i'm wrong. read more

Food was good and large creative selection to choose from. Good Steak, although my steak was over cooked but my wifes was done perfectly. Good sides and appitizers. The bartender was as other have commented on not all there. Persons working at this establishment should know more about thiere beers and food selection. You would think a small town place like this would employe friendly personnel. Also, we are from MI traveling to St. Marys for business and I asked the bartender where the Straubs Brewery was in town and she could not tell me. The decor is out dated but overall the place is the only place in this town that I really think I would come back to again. Okay so a friend and I went out to Gunner's Last year. He had told me that his friends and him stop in there when seeing the elk. I was super excited to stop in myself. Not knowing what to expect when I open the door, A beautiful clean atmosphere with some of the most professional friendly staff ever. My friend had the flaming ribs our sever lit the ribs on fire right in front of us wow this was one of the most exciting parts of our trip. I had the endless crab legs they were absolutely delicious. Now my friend and I are bringing two more guest with us in just a few days I cant wait to write a review again about how great this trip will be. As long as the food is the same and the staff hasn't changed I'm sure everything will be prefect.
