    Van Gogh immersive experience
    Muneerah A.

Great experience. Definitely loved the immerse experience. Also kids friendly so feel free to take your little ones (my kids 1.5 and 4 enjoyed it as much as the adults). Minus one star because getting hold/ purchasing the tickets was a little bit difficult. Also when I bought the tickets the address listed was different and was glad I doubled checked the address. Overall great family experience and would recommend doing it.

Imagine Van Gogh Immersive @ Strand Theatre , Boston Loved the experience! I took my time walking through the exhibit and reading every piece of literature made available with lively digitally immersive displays of his paintings attached. Amazing if you are a Van Gogh enthusiast or newcomer. ( as this is something for everyone with interest in great master artists) Found it interesting learning about the fact that Van Gogh was a color-blind artist and they make that fact very lively as they display what color factually looked like in the eyes of Van Gogh digitally. ( opening up fascinating new perceptions of the artist) The exhibitors created the exact painting replication of his actual housing room in the mental asylum in France. It was interactive ( meaning you can enter the room and be a part of the painting. Even wearing his hat etc. I did enter and only pictured myself wearing the top of his hat in the room as I did not want to take my Covid - 19 mask protection off) Very cool! I would have loved a deeper photoshoot in this atmosphere if Covid -19 was not existing. The optional virtual reality experience for an additional $5 was very worth it to me, as I noticed a lot of people skipping it. (If you have not tried VR before, I would say try it and if you don't like it, just take the goggles off.) It was fascinating and at first, I thought I would fall over, as the experience carries you through the old town in France on a pathway and meshing his paintings with the live scenery, and a verbal tour. ( such as Starry Night, the French Cafe, and additional famous paintings ) Lastly, the digitally immersive displays of Van Goghs famous oil paintings morphing into each other ( flowers, and all, etc )throughout the entire exhibit were visuals I could have sat and watched for hours. I'm glad I caught a few videos on my iPhone because it is hard to describe beauty with words. ( if I could post videos on Yelp I would ) . I loved it!

Boston Opera Collaborative presented Jacques Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld at the Strand Theatre. It was general seating, and I had arrived early enough, so I selected an aisle seat... ummm, my knees knocked against the back of the chair in front of me. No good, and I'm not tall. But I found the spacing more comfy at the next seat I tried a few rows away, and noticed that the folks in the row behind me had no such knee issues. The theater is on the smaller side, so we could see the facial features of the actors, which was nice, because I was even able to recognize the one of them as having been in a recent OperaHub production of 'Midsummer Night's Dream.' Refreshments were available for purchase out in the foyer. Bathrooms were across the ways, off a separate orangey room. Their toilet paper was way too thin, causing a slow turnover of stalls. Some lovely parking info I located on the internet: "There is plenty of on street parking on Columbia Road in the evenings. Free off-street parking is available in the Ramsey Street Municipal lot. Ramsey Street is located at the intersection of Dudley Street and Columbia Road behind CVS Pharmacy and Payless Shoes. Free parking is available for evening and Sunday shows in the Citizen's Bank and Sovereign Bank parking lots. The Citizen's Bank lot is located at the corner of Columbia Road and Cushing Avenue, next to Bank of America. The Sovereign Bank lot is located in the rear of the bank at 585 Columbia Rd."

I recently came here for the New Year's Concert by Boston Baroque. The theater itself was old but I can see that they have kept it clean and made some upgrades in the infrastructure like the the seats and Lighting. Moreover, bathroom floors and what have you. For the community, I really think that this theater is pretty decent.

Ask the Community - Strand Theatre

Where is there parking for Wednesday November 10 at noon?

If you are willing to walk a bit, there are some residential streets around the theater that have free parking. It would take some time to find and a bit of a walk, but that's what we did.

It's a really good location in terms of reaching the urban residents of North Dorchester and Upham's Corner since it runs right on Columbia Ave.

The seating is setup like a dinner theater the front half has tables and seats, these are the most expensive at $20.00-$25.00 and the back half are regular seats which are $18.00. The venue as a whole is very beautiful and much larger than one would assume by looking at the exterior. There is also a room in which you can purchase beverages and snacks for cheap. The theater itself is beautiful with its high ceiling and chandelier you can tell it is an older building which adds to the beauty. The only downside is it was a little bit drafty so bring a sweater or jacket. The stage was the right height so everyone even the people sitting in the back could see the stage well. The actors were great and so were the musicians and the set was very well thought out and worked well with its limited settings. After the show I felt bad for not coming to see a show sooner!

We were surprised to find a line at the top of the stairs! It was a fairly quick wait in line before we were seated and the show began. The stories themselves? Good, to very good. I was surprised to see most of these people to tell a story in the allowed 3 minutes. It was very enjoyable to listen to most of them. What didn't I enjoy? The emcee was not good. Haltingly passed information on to the crowd, and awkwardly moved the show along. The musical intermission of sorts - seemed strikingly out of place and fairly inappropriate in it's introduction and presentation. I like the idea of how the show works, with audience participation, it seemed like there were a few stressors going on that didn't normally occur, perhaps cause the first year of shows were drawing to a close? Who knows. I'd go back to see one of the shows. Usually held at bars, a good opportunity to grab a drink, a meal and be entertained.

Took a weekly 4-week class Intro to Storytelling last year…read more Each week instructor reminded participants to "own your story and allow yourself to be vulnerable." I did just that. On week 3 we each told our stories to the class for feedback. When I was done telling mine that instructor's feedback (in front if me and the entire class) was, "I'm not buying your story and no one else will either." Thankfully two participants called her out as did I. A few days later I sent her an email to let her know that she had made a mistake. Never received a reply. It's probably best for this organization to screen their instructors for actual TEACHING ABILITY (and not hire adult children with unresolved passive aggressive tendencies who will attempt to do harm to people for being vulnerable) which is different from being able to tell a story in front of a group. Regretfully I can't recommend MASSMOUTH as a teaching entity. Since I've not attended their slams I am unable to comment on that.

I've been meaning to check out the free "Your Terrible Ex!" show at The Riot Theater for a few…read moremonths now. But it takes place at 10pm on a Friday night, and I tend to have to wake up early the next day. So what finally brought me out to this area of JP? A free ComedySportz Improv show courtesy of CSZ Boston and the Yelp Elite Culture Club. With ComedySportz at 8pm - 9:30pm (free for me that night only, otherwise $15 plus $1.50 fee) and Your Terrible Ex! from 10pm - 11:30pm (free all the time, whether for you or for me), I decided, yes, it was time. I would show up for the first, and just simply stay put for the 2nd. Being a girl arriving by myself, I drove by maybe 6-8 times before a driver magically appeared to get into the car situated right on the corner by The Riot Theater. I didn't want to park too long a walk away, although there were some spots maybe 3 blocks off on South Street. According to their website, The Riot Theater, is housed in A Far Cry Chamber Orchestra's storefront rehearsal space, and seeks to bring quality comedy to a part of Boston that has a wealth of support for the arts but little in the way of a regular comedy scene. ComedySportz was fun and entertaining, and entirely family friendly - but I knew this already from a past experience. Ideas were requested of the audience, so it was interactive and what I imagine improv to be - thinking on your feet with information that you have no control over. A myriad of games were played, each with its own name and rules, such as Pile Up, Dirty Hand Randy, Five Things, I Can Do Better, Four Corners, Twinsies (with actual physical audience participation) and 185. I found out that night for the first time that ComedySportz is not just a Boston Institution, but is located in 23 cities across the country, and even in Manchester, UK and Berlin, Germany! That was pretty cool. After the ComedySportz crowd (aka tonight's loyal fans) exited to high fives from our show's cast, a new group took over the space, removed the score screen, set up some folding chairs along the stage, and adjusted the audience's seating a bit. We were told that Your Terrible Ex! would start 5 min late as always. A single private bathroom was available for use, and concessions were available at a table by the entrance. As often happens at events, the headlining show was preceded by a pre-show. And this evening, the guest comedy troupe was The Gorge, a four person group. Perhaps I missed something, but I didn't remember any audience participation. They just flung themselves into acting out a number of situations that confused me and seemed to confuse their improv partners as well. After The Gorge were done, Naffy Improv took over the stage for Your Terrible Ex!, interviewing one eager audience volunteer about his ex with whom he and his current girlfriend (who had introduced them) were no longer friends with. Taking from the interview the fact that he'd gone to museums on dates with this art student ex, the cast ran with it and came up with a skit that took place in a museum. Swears and certain intimate body parts were tossed nilly willy. The scene from Ghost was reinacted to a degree. Children died. Wine was bought; then promptly broken over someone's head. Oregano was requested. Naffy did a bit better on the improv front. Professionally, both groups were a bit lacking, as they would react to each other's bits when as actors they should not have. But hey, it was a free show that runs on donations. Based on this one visit, my order of preference by sheer entertainment value would be: ComedySportz, Naffy, guest group. Background music beat through the wall from Jeanie Johnston Pub & Grill next door, where it was suggested that we could grab a quick shot since The Riot Theater didn't have anything alcoholic.

This review is for Riot Stand Up Comedy at the Riot Theater in Roslindale, Saturday night at 10pm…read more I would not recommend this comedy venue for anyone over the age of about 30. On this evening, the audience was made up of comics and friends and partners of comics, and then there was our group. It's a very small space, so we immediately stuck out. Initially we didn't find the host or the first couple of comics very funny, and we politely chuckled and smiled. As the night wore on, the comics seemed to take offense that we were not laughing, and took it as a personal challenge to "break" us down, until toward the end of the evening the entire focus was on us. The jokes also got more vulgar with one pointing to our group to see if we might want to try a couples swap. The last straw was the next comic who worked himself up to saying he wanted to blank us and we just walked out. I can understand that this is a venue for budding comics to try develop a craft, but this group of 20- and 30-somethings couldn't connect outside their own generation. Some jokes were mildly funny, but too many had obscure references and missing punch lines. Even more, most of them didn't grasp the basic concept of comedy--present your material and if it doesn't get a laugh, you move on rather than take offense and single out or bully people not laughing.
