There are 3 types of tours: sightseeing, combination (which includes sightseeing and Wings of Mackinac), and Mackinac package (which includes combination and Fort Mackinac). We got the Mackinac package. There are no set departure times. You fall in line then once the next carriage for your tour comes, you go on it. Grand Hotel is not included in this tour but at the end, you can be dropped off to a spot that is about a 10-minute walk to the Grand Hotel. The Mackinac package includes the Surrey Hills Museum and the nearby Wings of Mackinac. Before going in the Surrey Hills Museum, the picture of the group in your carriage will be taken and this will be available for a fee inside the Surrey Hills Museum. The doughnuts here are a must try. They're served off the oven hot and fresh. Different shops selling different items (magnets, clothes, and other souvenirs) can be found here. Wings of Mackinac is a butterfly conservatory. It's a little small compared to other butterfly conservatories I've been to but it's still nice. Arch Rock is another stop where you can have your picture taken! Fort Mackinac is another stop but we decided not to go here. You can spend as much time at any stop since the carriages arrive frequently. The guides are assigned a carriage; your guide will be different on your next carriage ride. Our guides were very nice and knowledgeable about island and its history. We had a good time touring.

Cody was a great taxi driver. Friendly and personable. Alex was awful. He was talking on his phone when he finally picked us up. He made the horses trot most of the way back to The Grand. By the time we got to the incline up to The Grand, the horses were wiped out and were visibly struggling to get there. All six of us on the taxi noticed. He asked if he could drop us off at the ice cream parlor end rather than take us to the main entrance. We all got off to hopefully help the horses. He has no business being in charge of them! Hopefully this is his final season.

While it's more expensive than the public carriage tour, it's well worth the money. You can call them directly to book in advance or same day, and they were flexible when I initially booked for the morning but needed to reschedule to mid-afternoon. Gough's can pick you up directly at your hotel, as well! Gough's only hires locals, and our guide Justin is a longtime Mackinac Island resident with roots dating six generations back. He took us on a custom 90 minute tour to see things we had never seen--West Bluffs, Inn at Stonecliffe, the airport, Harrisonville, and Turkey Hill. He and his horses Tessa and Champ were great guides through their stomping grounds. It is one of my favorite Mackinac Island experiences ever, and I would definitely do it on my next visit to explore even more. P.S. Note: I believe the elevator only goes up to the third floor and then you'll have to take the stairs from there. Our bedroom had a nice view of the hotel, porch/patio area, the turret housing the 1852 Island Grill, the main street, and Lake Huron. Thank goodness the A/C worked just fine as we were on the top floor. My only concerns would be the slanted roof top which made it difficult to get in and out of the bed without hitting my head and the bath tub which could get slippery and had no grab bar. Amenities included a swimming pool, hot tub, firepit area to roast s'mores (s'mores kit not included, but sold in hotel store), a front porch with rocking chairs with views, bike rentals, and two restaurants. The hotel is within walking distance of Fort Mackinac and the downtown area, but a good distance away from all the hubbub that made for a relaxing and quiet stay.

Housekeeping was very helpful, and the continental breakfast was very good with an attendant always available when needed. Unfortunately, several issues kept this from being a great stay. The check-in experience on Thursday, September 17, 2026, was extremely disappointing. The front-desk employee was unfriendly and seemed unwilling to answer basic questions about the hotel or guest accommodations. On two occasions between approximately 5:00 and 7:30 PM, I tried asking questions about the hotel and was essentially told that everything was on the sheet in our room. I also had an unpleasant interaction when purchasing fudge at the front desk and paying cash. When I asked for a receipt, I was told rather abruptly that there was no receipt available. The internet and streaming service were atrocious. The connection was unreliable and made streaming nearly impossible. For a hotel at this price point, I would expect dependable Wi-Fi. The air conditioning was another concern. From roughly 5:00 to 7:00 PM each day, it barely kept the room comfortable. I would be concerned about how it performs during the hotter months of July and August. The frustrating part is that most of our experience was good. The room, location, breakfast, and housekeeping were all positives. I would consider staying here again, but I hope management addresses the front-desk customer service, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning issues. Those problems can make a significant difference in an otherwise enjoyable stay.
