I really enjoyed my g&t made with Botanic gin and Indian tonic water, lecker :-) The crowd was small but I guess if you cane back here in a year you would find the same people at the same seats in the bar ;-) overall a nice place and I will probably end up here again at some point.

We came on a Friday evening, and there were many people but not overwhelmingly crowded. The place is adorable with its stuffed animals/flowers decor hung on the ceiling. There was a DJ spinning indie dance tracks, perfect to get me dancing. I saw that one could reserve tables there, and there are 2 Foosball tables, books on a shelf, electronic gambling slot machine -- pretty much one could not be bored there. I first came to think of Substanz as my favourite indie dance club in Munich. The people are friendly, interesting and willing to get to know new faces, and the music starts early. They do play electronic and some hip hop stuff, but save that for much later in the evening. Sometimes folks are a little bashful to start the dance party off, but I've found that just one or two people getting up when they feel the beat seems to be enough to get things going here. Secondly, Substanz also frequently hosts poetry slams, so the young, artful souls of Munich find haunt and haven here too. Occasionally, they also host benefit parties, meaning that you can shake your groove thing and pay a small cover to go towards a great cause. Admission is €6 to the slams and the benefits are usually around €5 admission. Otherwise, there is no cover to get in here. Thirdly, Substanz is ultimately also a bar with television screens, meaning you can come here to watch the football (soccer) game of the night complemented by the liquid gold brewed by our good friends at Tegernsee and the fairly tasty bar snacks (wings, cheese sticks, etcetera).

When I was visiting, there was a guy playing vinyls (not mixing at all though) really experimental tunes that kept heads turning. Bar: Very, very nice bar staff, good mixes of drinks, fair prices and always a smile! Guests: People know where to have a good conversation, fun and chilled people on a spot. No stress and no attitude. Interior: Really nice old-school feeling seating opportunities.

This place is unadulterated rock and roll. It hits you before you even make it down the smokey stairs. The smell of piss, beer, and puke, I mean. But that is also the smell of rock and roll. Most folks here wear a lot of black, but I somehow always to find my way here when I'm wearing something like a pink t-shirt or a white button-down. No big deal. Everyone is too cool busy minding their own business to give a rat's ass. Foosball, darts, and pool are in the back and around the corner. Tables are everywhere. Everyone is friendly and perpetually in a good mood. Must be something in the leather and spikes. Or maybe the hair dye. Or maybe the great prices on shots of liquor. Beer prices are average, but the liquor prices are great. If you really love your punk and metal, and you're nice, you'll probably eventually get into a cool conversation with the bartenders about their first viewing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, comparing scuba diving notes, or debating the merits of early versus later albums from Bad Religion. This isn't the type of bar to have loud voices pouring over the conversation you are having. It's like a place to sit back, relax and enjoy a few beers with your friends. The bar tender is sweet and very friendly. Decor-wise it has little ceiling painting of angels enjoying their beers which adds an overall good touch to this place. Mirrors line the outer bar to give this place the feeling of a larger place inside. Add to that, this place's cheery music selection and you get a great vibe. Oddly enough for a place who's name means beer heaven there aren't too many beers on tap (Augustiner Lager and ... something else). Other than that it's mostly hard liquor composing of your standard Jim, Jack and of course Johnny. Totally matches the scene though but not a skevey place either. I would return.

Though it doesn't exactly fit the typical "dive" bar stereotype because it is right in the heart of the Gaertnerplatz area (thus making it insanely crowded on a Saturday night), if you come here on a Sunday you will get the same hole-in-the-wall rockbar atmosphere, but slightly less loud. You also won't find yourself sitting alone at the bar either....I think about 15 others were there. Not bad for Sunday at 10pm :D If a cocktail is what you're looking for, I'm sure the bartenders can make it for you, but you might fare better at one of the cocktail places down the road. However, if it's beer, shots, or straight liquor you want then Holy Home is the place for you. Just don't drink too much or you might find yourself staring at the wall of knick knacks behind the bar hahah I'm going again Thursday this week, so it'll be interesting to see how a weekday evening compares to the weekends!
