Riders Beware: Fraudulent Charges and Terrible Service…read more Please protect yourself and look elsewhere for rentals. We rented bikes overnight without taking initial photos, which was a huge mistake. While riding into Tofino, the bike experienced a mechanical chain issue. Upon inspection, we noticed deep, rusted scratches and old zip ties holding the spokes together--corrosion and wear that takes months to form, not a single night. Because we reached downtown late and the shop there was already closed, we had to ride the malfunctioning bike all the way back to the campground rather than addressing it that day. The bikes were only ridden on the main path into town and back, and they were never involved in any accident or crash. When we tried to report the mechanical issue the next morning at the campground location, the staff member completely flipped the narrative. After a ten-minute phone call with the owner, he falsely accused me of "crashing the bike" and pushed through unauthorized repair charges. When I tried to calmly explain the pre-existing rust, he began mocking, gaslighting, and laughing at me. Being openly ridiculed by an employee was incredibly upsetting and ruined our trip.To make matters worse, the owner is now using the heated exchange--which her employee entirely initiated--as justification to penalize us for damages we did not cause. This business has an untraceable damage process and uses its own lack of documentation to exploit customers. If you absolutely must rent here, photograph every square inch of the bike before you leave, or prepare to be blamed and charged for their failed maintenance.

The bikes looked roughly used and there was no picture prodedure where they documented damage like a car rental. We rode the bikes into town and locked them up. When we picked them back up it didn't look as though they had been disturbed while we were parked but when my husband started riding it he noticed the chain acted funny for a moment. We looked at it again and noted, again that it was in rough shape the bike place had old zip ties on some of the spokes to hold them in place. We decided to ask if we could swap it for a bike in better shape when we got back to the rental place at Surf Grove. Unfortunately when we got back to try to swap it out the guy who worked there accused my husband of crashing it. We explained we hadn't been in any crashes. We hadn't taken any pictures before pickup to show how rough the bike had been. We asked them for photos of the bike showing that it was in good shape and didn't have zip ties and such on it when we picked it up but he just insisted that himself and the owner said we crashed it and would need to pay to repair the old broken bike. It's probably also worth noting that it clearly had been crashed at some point in the past as there were lots of scratch marks that had rusted after the paint had been scraped off. Rust doesn't form in the 24 hours that we had the bike... We are very honest people in our 50s, my husband is a nurse and I work in cancer research. We aren't people who damage other people's property and lie about it. I once hit a parked car and left a note with my insurance. I know there are a lot of bad people in this world who are dishonest, but the way we were accused by the man who worked there and mocked was very disheartening. Especially since we now probably have to contact our lawyer and deal with our credit card company over something that could easily have been avoided by them having appropriate procedures to check bikes for damage before lending them out. Unless you want stress and to be accused of being an immoral person during your vacation, don't rent here. Will update this when we know how much money we are out due to the disorganization or potential outright scamming?

We were so privileged to have Andy and Ben as our guides and what they contribute to this world is deeply meaningful. They met our humor, excitement, and passion step for step and this trip was made all the more incredible thanks to them. As Ben and Andy shared with us local history, resiliency of the Tofino community to protect the land, or fun facts about the local plants and animals - they spoke with such an overflowing passion that truly brought everything to life. They love what they do and it made our trip so much more fun and meaningful - all thanks to them. Extra Props: - Our paddle started in some challenging weather, yet Andy + Ben were great at reading our group and we always felt safe and supported in all conditions. - 10/10 shout out for the food. You won't go hungry as PWK plans for teas, coffee, snacks, and each meal was balanced and filling! They did a great job accommodating dietary preferences too. I still dream of the salmon chowder! - We saw: sea otters, seals, bald eagles, a pine marten, so many starfish, fried egg jellies, moon jellies, banana slugs, and a garter snake. - Our paddle was in late June and we had 1 day of heavy rain (which really added to the adventure!), 1 day of sun, and the last day was partly sunny with rain that evening. On our last day as our trip was coming to an end, my heart was as equally full as it was sad to be leaving. I only hope to make it back again sometime soon. If you're even remotely on the fence about taking a trip with Paddle West - DO IT!! I promise you'll love it and then some!

Sam, our guide, is studying oceanography, so was a good resource in showing us the sights as well as explaining about the currents and tidal flow in the area. The boats and gear were all good quality and using the online registration made check in a breeze. Our only negative was in the timing of the outing. The other group in our tour, a family, was late in arriving, then needed time to get organized. We ended up starting our on shore orientation quite late. In addition, we returned to the landing before the scheduled ending time. All in all, we lost probably 30 minutes of the scheduled 2 hour tour, which was a bit of a disappointment. Also, the level of paddling was easier than I would have liked, but that is to be expected in a shorter family - oriented trip like this. Overall, a fun was to enjoy the beautiful coastline around Tofino and learn a few things too.
