It is the easy way up to the cathedral and Castle as opposed to Steep Hill. It even has a bench to sit on half way up. The greestone Stairs are so-called from the old english `greesen` or steps. The stairs were an important walkway from the 12th century,linking the medieval suburbs of Butwerk at the foot and Eastgate at the top. Both had grown up to the East of the old city walls. In the 1600`s, many of the cathedral cleaners lived in the cottages on Greestone Terrace,just off the stairs.In the later centuries,when this became a more exclusive area,one of the houses took the name `Grecian House` mistaking `greestone` for something of a more classical flavour. During an uprising over the Cathedral Spires imminent removal, in the 1720's, the rioters knocked on this gate and the keeper stuck his head out. They knocked him out and went in but the Bishop gave them ale and calmed them down. For my guide it has a few ghosts: A phantom, rolling head is reported to bounce down this steep area, bowling over anyone not quick enough to move out of the way! The area has also had reports of phantom monks and a ghostly woman holding a baby.

Hard to find this is in the middle of nowhere. Sited in a farm yard it has a place to park and they…read moredon't mind visitors. It is one of the few Templar Sites, other than the odd church, with any remains above ground. This is a tower and you can see where the round church stood and that the farmhouse is made from the stone. The ruin consists of the intact square south tower, one of two added to the original structure during the Templars' tenure, north and south of the chancel. The car park is on the site of the round nave. The Templars financed their military campaigns through the income generated by their estates all over Europe, including several in Lincolnshire. It was founded in the period 1150 to 1160 and the order was dissolved in 1312. The tower has strange effects on people..some rush out. I love it and find it exhilarating. I climb the barrier and up the worn steps and sit at the top feeling wonderful yet shaky. A friend walked the land around with dowsing rods and (I am a sceptic) he handed them to me and they were going crazy..I could hardly hold them. In the tower the graffitti is very interesting ..British and American airmen from Bomber County etched their names and base/date. I wonder how many of them ever went back? It was a preceptory and training would have been done here but at Temple Bruer, the Templars were leaders in the sheep farming industry..knocks the myth a little?

There are many incidences of screaming skulls around the country. This is Lincolns: The woman who haunts this building may be connected to the skull which is bricked up within a wall. The skull once stood in a room, but when it was removed from the building it started to scream. The owners decided it would be for the best to brick it up in a wall to prevent future accidental removal.

Lincoln Castle is a an interesting location in the heart of Lincoln, England. The medieval castle…read moreremains mostly consist of a large,well preserved wall enclosing the grounds. Inside, the buildings include a courthouse, still in use, and an interesting prison, with an original Georgian part and a much larger, and interesting, Victorian prison which was considered cutting-edge for prison designs and theories at the time it was built. One can tour the prison and get excellent views of Lincoln from walking atop the walls. The castle also houses one of the original surviving copies of the Magna Carta in a special room.

The first gate here was probably the 1st-century timber gate of the legionary fortress, but no trace has yet been found archologically. A stone facing was possibly added to it in the early 2nd century. Constructed c.AD200 it is the inner of the arches standing now. It would have had a bastion. After many rebuildings through the centuries it has since been subject to damage from vehicles, particularly to the upper part hit by a lorry in July 1964, when it had to be dismantled and rebuilt. Anyway its importance is that it is the only Roman gate in Britain with traffic passing underneath.

It also hosts the medieval christmas market, which is lovely, quite small and quaint but especially in a lovely setting, and with a cup of hot christmassy booze, it's a surefire win. Definitely get yourself there for either the palace itself and/or the christmas market when it's there.

You can go in and climb to the top looking at all the working of the mill and a friendly miller will answer questions and explain things. Views from the top are amazing. Children will love it. The sell little books on mills, postcards and flour. It still works and can be very noisy inside on a windy day.

Off the beaten track this place is huge and the gatehouse is the largest remaining in the country…read more Very impressive and loved by artists. You can go inside for, a fee up, the new staircase. Within the grounds stand the ruins of the monastic buildings, notably the elegantly decorated octagonal chapter house of 1282-1308. An early example of brick building in England, it proclaimed the wool trade-based prosperity of one of the wealthiest English Augustinian monasteries. Its founder Sir William le Gros, Earl of Yorkshire, was buried here. (Will the Fat) It is free to wander around it and I find it very atmosphering at dusk and eerie. I swear I have heard whispering voices. By day it is a lovely place to visit. They say if you take stone from the abbey you will die and there is a legend that a manor house build of it suddenly collapsed. Now you will think me mad but once on a sunny day I was walking back to the gatehouse from the chapter house and found myself rooted to the spot. My friends asked what was wrong and I said I couldn't move my legs and I couldn't! They pulled me and suddenly I was free. NO idea what it was but it scared me!

This is a memorial stone dedicated to the Pilgrims going to America…read more In 1608 the attempt to leave for Holland was made, this time from Killingholme Creek near Immingham where a Dutch ship waited. Men were ferried aboard first, but before the women and children could do so an armed crowd intervened. The Pilgrim Fathers left from the bank of the Humber at a place called Immingham Creek to Holland in 1608. The actual spot was marked by a memorial which was erected in 1924. The granite top stone of the memorial was taken from Plymouth Rock, Mass and presented by the Sulgrave Institution. The memorial was erected by the Anglo-American Society of Hull. The memorial became surrounded by industry as the Immingham dock area expanded and was moved in 1970 to its present site in a small park opposite the church in Immingham. According to Alan Tailby in his book the Pilgrims did hire a boat to take them to Holland from Boston in 1607 but the skipper, after taking their money, betrayed them to the authorities and they were imprisoned for a time. Many of the streets in Immingham are named after the Pilgrims: e.g. Clyfton Crescent and Brewster Avenue. Some 22 million Americans claim descent from the Pilgrim Fathers who sailed in the Mayflower and related crossings. The memorial stone, erected in 1924, on the estuary, was moved in 1970 to near St. Andrew's church because of re-development.When I worked in the archeology department I remember listing this as an SMA. (Sites and Monuments). Many Americans visit it each year.
