They take the time to discuss our specific lawn needs and give you a recipe (reminds me of how hair stylists will give you the same for your hair color). The shop is cute, with lots of parking, and cute products and plants inside for sale. They have a wide variety of outdoor plants, as well. A classic spot run by genuinely nice people. I came in wanting a few plants for my apartment with no knowledge of how to care for them. They were really helpful with picking out some great plants that are now thriving. Stacey was great helping me pot everything and everyone I interacted with had such a good attitude. They have a large selection of rubber trees and fiddle leaf figs. These aren't the easiest of house plants, but they look great and are worth the work. read more

It's easy to overlook this garden supply store but they've been around for decades and cultivate a nice, folksy atmosphere. I've gotten vegetable plants and seeds here. The staff is pleasant and knowledgeable. During the home quarantine, they were limiting the number of patrons in the store at one time -- which is perfectly fine by me. If you want to support local businesses instead of big-box stores, this is a nice place to check out. read more

Lovely experience. There was ample parking on the gravel beside the building. Fuller was kind and knowledgeable, definitely not a pushy salesman. He helped me choose the right plants for my space and gave care instructions for them as well. Great experience and I'm sure I'll be back for more. I frequently drove to Durham just to shop at Stone Brothers before I moved to Tennessee and before Stone Brothers became Stone Brothers & Byrd. Now that I can't drive there as easily as I could when I lived in North Carolina, they're shipping charges are very reasonable. Stone Brothers is the best company I've ever seen for all your gardening needs, and a lot more. It's fun just to look at all the stuff they have. They have everything you could ever need for your gardening needs or can get it for you if it's not in stock at the moment. The people and managers at Stone Brothers are the greatest. Stone Bros. is a family owned garden center around the corner from the old Durham Bulls stadium in downtown Durham. We go here for almost all our lawn and gardening needs. The staff is exceptionally helpful. The store sort of rambles and it is fun to explore nooks and crannies and stumble on some gardening goodies. They also rent and service garden equipment at extremely reasonable prices. For the foodies on Yelp, Stone Bros. has a 55 gallon drum full of molasses, and a lot of old-school canned items and cured meat products. We haven't tried any of this yet ... but maybe someday. One day we were in the store and someone was on the phone wanting to buy the molasses from a distance (they don't ship it, though), so that's a good sign. I debated giving only four stars because they're closed on Sunday, which means weekend projects need to get underway before then. But the positives far outweigh this negative. read more

This place has a special place in my heart my mama Patsy Bishop worked here almost 16 yes before she retired, if ever went there, you knew Patsy!! All of her customers miss her but I think her energy and enthusiasm made the store what it is today. With her ideas of the additions of more garden decor, chimes, garden gifts, wider variety of gardening tools and nesscities, expand orders of bulbs, trees and plants has boosted the popularity of the store. It's a modern, yes, still dusty, nursery that has anything you need for your small garden or large farm. From fertilizers, mowers, old fashioned dry bean bins, delicate wind chimes of coloured glass or copper, concrete bird baths, Lily pond garden, any tree, flower or vegetable plant, they have it. What I love most is the food, yes food!! They've been known for their country ham and hoop cheese but with the extra additions of pickled orka, beets, spicy green been, asparagus, salsas, jams, jellies (FROG is my fave), BBQ sauce and so many other condiments!!! All these changes bought a dusty old feed store to a trendy gardening nursery! Always been popular place with natives but the transplants need to know, pass off that big chain garden store and come support long, time local Durham business! It's just a fun place where you can take your kids and learn about gardening, buy what you need, grab some hoop cheese and strawberry jam! I hope it's there forever! This place is fantastic. The staff are always helpful and knowledgable, and gave great advice about how to care for my new fiddle leaf fig! They have a variety of plants and even organic jams/foods available in the store. One thing I didn't see as much of when I stopped by were herbs, so call ahead and make sure they have what you're looking for! The location has easy street parking out front, and a driveway you can pull in to load your vehicle if necessary. read more

Passed this place many times on my way to the farmer's market, but always forgot to check it out on my way back. Finally took the opportunity this morning. They've got an extensive supply of all things garden! Outside, they have a number of perennial and annuals of both the edible and non-edible variety. Not quite sure how the prices match up to other garden centers. Inside there was a warehouse full of soils, amendments, decorative stones, tools, etc. The people working there were very nice and helpful. This place is adorable. I looked at the different Yelp "Shop Local" offers prior to Christmas, and saw that there was an inexpensive deal for a combination package of 3 different fresh herbs, plant pot, and bag of dirt. I had driven past Stone Bros & Byrd dozens of times to go to Motorco, Fullsteam, etc but never paid attention to it. As one can imagine there is a huge array of different plants (including some gorgeous poinsettas) and gardening tools, but to my surprise, I also saw big slabs of house-cured ham, and long tubes of different sausages draped over the beams of a wooden structure (cart?) in the middle of the main room (it sort of looked like a scene from Walking Dead). There was also an extensive food section with old fashioned candy, locally made bacon, freshly shelled peanuts, little bags of rice and grits, and jars of locally made familiar things (strawberry jam, pickled beets) and strange things (moonshine jelly? jalapeno eggs? toe jam?). The people who work here are brimming with Southern charm and hospitality, and couldn't be nicer. I got the herb deal, but I will definitely return to try some of their strange and wonderful foodstuffs. I had no idea this place had a lawn mower repair shop. When I had asked a friend where to get my mower repaired, he had told me to take it to Stone Brothers and Byrd! I was absolutely astonished they even did this kind of work. I had always gone there for my grass seed and veggies, but was amazed when a guy named Steve, not only got to my mower within one day, he addressed issues I hadn't been able to get resolved elsewhere, not to mention he was a lot less expensive. Ask questions and get straight answers. My wife and I've been been doing business here for 20+ years. Yearly now they tune-up my lawn tractor in the winter, and have repaired our tiller to like new performance. This year we used their landscaping experts to take down a couple trees, clear out overgrown areas and mulch our property. We are greatly pleased with the fine results. read more

If there is a product beyond the ordinary that we need, we usually find it at this business. I just got off the phone with someone at SB&B. After asking if they carried a particular lawn product, I was told they carried the product BUT he couldn't advise me to purchase it because it is the wrong time of the year to apply.
