For those who may be wary because of the reviews from a few years ago about an unpleasant lady - things seem a lot different now. There are two super nice guys who have been working there the last handful of times I've been. And the quality of their plants is the best I've seen around, and I've been to all the nearby garden centers in the last year, and this place has really nice looking plants. Their seeds are great too, they have all sprouted for me. And I love that they will take your empty plant containers and put them out for people to take for free (I always see a wide variety of sizes!). It seems like they are mindful of waste, which I appreciate, because they also were selling old bamboo plant ladders for $1 each (they have new ones too). Their prices are good, appropriate for the quality. Very happy to have this lovely center nearby! read more

This place is adorable! Tons of gorgeous houseplants, a plethora of chic planters (including hanging options), and super helpful and knowledgeable staff! I stopped in with my mom and my sister on a Friday afternoon. They have signs about masks, distancing, and limiting the number of people in the shop at one time, so we felt very safe. I picked up a parlor palm and a polka dot plant. Their signage clearly labeled the prices and also care instructions, which is a really nice touch. Will definitely be back! read more

They have a decent selection of plants for an urban landscape. Not very big, but they carry a lot of the new and commercially-interesting cultivars from local universities and arboretums. In general the staff is pretty good. Prices are definitely on the high side, particularly with their larger plants. Trees cost at least double compared to some other nurseries. Not all the plants are well taken care of. The most recent tree I bought had roots in such bad shape that the pot needed to be cut off the roots. Once I got it off, the plant was so potbound that I had to cut off about half the roots. I do like, however, that they keep their inventory reasonably up to date on their website. I was looking for a specific houseplant, a Zenzi ZZ, and this was one of the places that was recommended to me that may have some available. Called a few shops and Durham Garden Center was one of two that had them in stock and they only had one left. To my luck, it was still there when I got a chance to go that weekend. The gentleman who was there was nice and helpful and pointed me right to what I needed. They have a nice quaint area for houseplants with a nice variety of common plants. My Zenzi ZZ is one of my favorites and is thriving beautifully and putting out new growth! read more

Reasons I used to like to go to Durham Garden Center and spend all my money - excellent, healthy plant selection, helpful and knowledgeable and kind staff. Well, the plants are still good! Several times lately the woman that seems to be running the front is so snotty and snarky. I am a polite customer, but I do usually come there with a question or two, like if they have a certain plant in stock. My questions are few and they are normal questions one would ask at a nursery where they plan to spend money. The answers I get are not really answered and delivered with smart-ass attitude. It does not feel good to be treated so. So if you don't want to help people spend money on plants, and you hate the typical person that frequents your store, why poison a good place? Also, please know that many customers really really appreciate an offer by staff to help put large heavy stuff into their vehicles. read more

This place is on the other end of Durham from us but I saw an Instagrammer post about them and it reminded me about this business. We stopped in to get a new bush for our front yard. The staff was accessible, knowledgeable and friendly. I also liked that they clearly had a section for sunny plants and shady plants. We found a nice, healthy flowering bush and planted it in the fall -- we'll see the full benefits next spring. We'll have to remember them in the future for plants before looking at any chain stores. read more

Was in yesterday to select a plant. The woman in the store did not seem to want to be bothered helping me. Realized when I got home that the punch card she gave me was "under punched". She gave me credit for $40 (2 punches) when I spent over $100. I guess it is moot because at this point I have no intention of returning, between the mediocre service and the error on the punch card. read more

Beware when you shop for plants at this establishment since the owner/manager will NOT exchange any plant, under any circumstances; whereas, Lowes Garden Center will give you a full refund if you're unhappy with your purchase. Unfortunately, I chose the wrong species and offered to pay more to exchange for the correct species, but was not allowed. They do not put their customers first as most businesses do and their plants are much more expensive than other garden centers. I would advise folks to make sure you can return or exchange if you are not satisfied before making a purchase since they don't tell you that up front. read more

First off - I don't know why in the heck this place has 3 stars when this is the best garden place I have been since moving to the triangle area 7 months ago. *People need to quit being whiny children.* Hannah and James were absolutely fantastic. James is genuine, passionate, & was there to answer my questions immediately! Yea this place is good. We went in for pumpkins and mums- not a large selection, but we found exactly what we were looking for AND the quality was good. I think the price is probably on par with other garden centers in the area. The indoor plant area looked like there was a lot, I didn't take much time to look around as it is a small place and easy to feel crowded inside. read more

This place is great & has fair prices. The low star reviews are completely unwarranted (requiring masks during the pandemic, not being priced like a big box store etc). It's almost like someone is out to get them lol. I've only had positive experiences here and appreciate their native section. Support small businesses! Also, I was able to find some awesome plants I haven't been able to find elsewhere, like a pineapple guava and firecracker plant. read more

Updating my review just because I feel like this needs to be said: the store is requiring that customers wear masks due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this is a GOOD thing. They also have taken the time to post social distancing guidelines around the building. However, on my recent visit it appeared as though the actual staff are either not included in these policies, or they just don't care. You can have all of the signs and guidelines you want posted everywhere around the store, but it means absolutely nothing to me as a customer if I see your POINT OF SALE employee sitting there ringing people up unmasked. Seriously, it is just unbelievably irresponsible and self-defeating. I've been shopping at Durham Garden Center forever and I've always wanted this place to do well, but I'm sorry to say that due to this seemingly blatant disregard for the well being of their customers and the general public, I will not be returning to DGC in the future. read more

This was once a wonderful little garden center. They had everything, could answer just about any horticultural question, and carried all manner of interesting garden art, fountains, pots, etc. Think Logan's in Raleigh but smaller. Then they were sold. Today's version is a higher-priced, small version of the big box stores...no unusual plants, no unique locally-made garden art, no interesting pots, etc. The staff doesn't know what they have in stock, most can't answer horticultural questions, they frequently ignore you when you're clearly looking for something specific, and can be incredibly rude when they do engage. Now when I visit, I frequently leave empty-handed and end up at Lowe's. What a sad way to ruin a great local asset. read more

I don't expect excessive cheeriness but our interaction throughout felt perfunctory at best. Visited here with my son. I really enjoyed my visit! They had an excellent variety of houseplants for sale. I found a Hoya Publicalyx Splash with the biggest leaves I've seen. The prices were competitive and the plants looked very healthy. I saw some uncommon plants like Monstera Adansonii and Hindu Ropes. They also have a nice selection of pots and seasonal items like pumpkins in their front room. The staff is friendly. Although everything isn't grouped together by type, it was nice to walk around and see all the plants for sale. If you are ever in Durham and have the time, this is a great place to check out if you love plants. read more

I really, really wanted to write a nice review for this place. My garden consultant recommended them and I'm all about supporting a local business. In fact, I drove 10 minutes out of my way to support a local business as opposed to the Lowes that is down the road. I spent a good amount of money to get my garden set up for spring. I bought a dog repellent for the garden because they swore to me that it was the best and worked really well. Well, it didn't work at all. The dogs walked on it, peed on it, sniffed it, were not repelled at all. I tried spraying it again, same thing. So, no big deal, I went back to return it. But I was met with a somewhat willing store credit offer. However, this was after the woman in charge, or at least she seemed to be in charge because she was ordering people around, told (with a bit of an attitude) one of her underlings in front of me 'Just throw the spray in the trash. There's nothing I can do with it.' What happened to good customer service? Here's the situation. The product didn't work. I had the receipt. I returned it. It's not my problem what you do with it after that. And I certainly don't need to be made to feel guilty about it. I decided to buy something else since I didn't need to have a small amount of store credit floating around. So, I went out back to look at plants. They do have a fairly nice selection. I asked a woman putting out plants and organizing them, 'Do you have Iceland Poppies?'. She said, 'No, we don't have any of those'. I went into the next row of plants, literally six feet from where I was standing before and looked down and saw two of them. I pointed it out to her and she basically said- 'Oh'. No apology or anything. Weird. Okaaaaaaay. Back to checkout. I just wanted to get my couple of things with store credit and go. I had basically figured out in my head that I would owe them about a dollar with my store credit applied. One lady was checking me out. The manager was sitting behind the counter with another guy trying to give orders to her. It took these three people between 5 and 10 minutes to figure this out. (And I don't know exactly how long because I put my dollar down, told them I didn't care about the change and left.) I also noticed that the woman who was standing in line behind me (there is only one register) put her items back and left the store, not wanting to wait any longer. Durham Garden Center, I like your store and your offerings but your staff really, really needs some help. To compete with the larger stores, I would hope that your strength would be in your customer service. I am sharing this feedback so you can hopefully make some changes. I really wanted to love this cute little shop. I follow them on Instagram and twice now I have gone in to buy plants they have posted on Instagram and both times they were not in stock. It's hard to believe they could have sold out because I went in as soon as the pics were posted (I live right around the corner from them). As well, for one of the pictures the plants were displayed on a bookshelf that was nowhere to be found in the store, I'm pretty sure they're just posting random generic pictures regardless of whether or not they carry the plant, feels a little like false advertising. When I asked about it on Instagram my comment was deleted. Luckily there are plenty of other local nurseries in my area so I will be shopping elsewhere from now on. No need to waste my time on their bate pics. read more

I randomly passed it on the way to the Eno River Quarry and had to stop in. The staff are friendly and helpful. I needed gypsum (which none of the big brand stores like Home Depot carried, or even hear of) and the lady found it for me right away. They had a great selection of herbs, which we got on sale ($1.50). They also a large number of non-edible plants as well as an abundance of gardening supplies. It's not too big, but worth a visit. read more

The plants are nice the employees are not. They are not friendly, helpful or welcoming. I think the only reason they ask if you want help is because you haven't left yet. When you say you need help they act as if you are a major interruption to whatever purpose they think they serve. After today, I will not shop there again. Three years I have tried to make this experience work and this is the last time. To me shopping local is going to be any store that employs local residents AND has good customer service. This is a charming garden center with a wonderful selection of well-tended, healthy, reasonably priced plants. Their staff is wonderful - very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. They carry a full line of garden chemicals, fertilizers, mulch, soils, and soil amendments along with pots and statuary and bird feeding supplies. Great place to visit. Great location. The plants are very healthy, and the variety is fabulous - much better than you would find at a big box store. I like the local feel, and I love that they participate in and support many Master Gardener activities in Durham. Of course, their prices tend to be higher than at a big box store. I mostly shop here for a variety of shrubs/trees, or plants that are unusual, or varietals that are hard to find, not for your everyday kind of plant (like most standard annuals, for example - since the selection tends to be more abundant and cheaper at a big box store). The layout is great. The store inside is fun to roam around in and often I find unusual things I can't find elsewhere. But it is more expensive for basic items. The staff are very knowledgeable, but as someone else wrote, they are not always that friendly. When I have asked questions, some staff seemed to get an attitude or answer without much interest. Customer service could be better. But I think it just depends on the individual you are working with - as I have also had very good experiences too. The primary staff (the ones that appear to be "in charge") are the ones that seem to have more of an attitude. The more "hired help" kind of staff are more helpful and caring. Which is unusual.....you usually see things the other way around at small local businesses! I just wish their hours of operation were more flexible. They close at 5pm, so during the weekday I cannot go there due to my own work hours. And they are not open on Sundays. So Saturday before 5pm is the only day that many people can visit. It is very limiting - and if I want to get my weekend started early (buying the plants in advance for example), I have to go somewhere else, when I don't necessarily want to. read more
