Empanada
Olive M.

Trivia is so fun! I think every other Tuesday? Empanadas were yummy, the restaurant is spacious. I heard another table mention you can bring in outside food with the purchase of a drink! How interesting. Maybe next time!

What an absolutely beautiful space. I have only been once and I know I will be back many times in the future. My boyfriend and I walked over here while waiting for a table at Bantam and enjoyed their pinot noir very much. The live music and overall aesthetic was such a vibe. The owner certainly has an eye for beauty and symmetry. I look forward to coming back and trying their meat and cheese board!

This is a beautiful tasting room, located on the Westside of Santa Cruz. I love the interior, and the addition of the outdoor space as well. Come on a Friday evening for their event "Sip, Savor, and Sway". They feature a local food truck, and a live band. It's always a great time. Their wines are a bit more expensive than some of the other tasting rooms in the area, but I find that it's worth it. Service has always been great, everyone is super friendly and knowledgeable about the wines.

The ambience and customer service at Stockwell was amazing. It was quiet in a Saturday night so we were able to get a big comfy couch to ourselves. They also have high top tables to sit at. Although it is indoors, it is a drafty open space so the heaters were a nice touch. We had a bottle of the Syrah and a charcuterie plate. To our surprise, they did have gluten free crackers to accommodate my partner who has celiac. The employees were very friendly and helpful. We would return!

Eric: if you want your place featured in the next "Sideways," better get in touch with the Trefethen, Hess, and Bedrock wine folks.

"Driving Miss Moblee," Act IV, Scene I (15/18). [Interior shot of Stockwell Cellars' high-ceilinged Fair Avenue winery and tasting room. It is just after 1pm. E. and B. are seated in the back right corner on a solidly built wooden bench mounted onto steel support beams constructed by the winemaker himself, who is also a welder. They are sipping Santa Cruz Mountains wines from two open bottles: a 2017 Regan Vineyard Pinot Grigio Ramato and a 2014 Regan Vineyard Merlot. "Still the Good Old Days" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqFD2ja-9Fs) plays in the background as E. and B. sip their wines with bowls of saffron sesame popcorn, shelled habanero pistachios, and Marcona almonds with fresh rosemary and Maldon sea salt flakes]. E: Dude, this Ramato totally rocks, Salinity balanced by yellow stone fruit and just a hint of earthiness at the end. Makes me rethink the whole Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, to be honest with you. And this Merlot! It's frickin' delicious, but in a boysenberry, brambly kinda way that is herbal and leafy rather than overly oaky or sweet ripe fruity. Who needs to order Pinot when you can drink a Merlot this frickin' good instead? F-word you, Miles & Maya! F-word you, you OK Boomer 2004 Hollywood movie losers! B: I know, right? Good thing the dude here stopped just forging metal and started crafting wine as well. Still, that 1909 anvil of his dad's does look pretty frickin' awesome up there behind the tasting bar, doesn't it? Napa Valley has got nothing on the Westside, baby. E: Totally! I mean, I asked Bryce W. to review this place in The Press and all, but now I realize that his tag line, "The Central Perk of Wine," was pretty frickin' stupid. Or, if not stupid, then just really, really corny and way too Gen X for our intended demographic iGen web site users. Come on, Bryce! Can't you do better than that? Stockwell so rocks! And the music is great, too! This new Sheryl Crow album is really, really good, isn't it? B: Sure is. Sheryl, she never gets old. Like Kris Kristofferson, Keith Richards, Neil Young, James Taylor, and Willie Nelson - all of whom sing with Sheryl on the album, by the way - she'll just one day fade away, slowly, like a bottle of Santa Lucia Highlands Tondré Grapefield Pinot that has passed its prime after 25 or 30 years in bottle, I guess. [E. looks at B. with a tiny glint of awe in her beautiful brown eyes]. E: Wow, B. You sure know your wines! Not bad, for a Williams dude. [E. winks]. B: Yes, well I definitely didn't know about such things back then, in the 90s. I do recall seeing a case of Ravenswood old vine Sonoma County Zinfandel arriving once at the Foreign Language Center, where I worked as a student, that the chair ordered for some big faculty party at the end of the academic schoolyear. Dude got his Ph.D. in comp lit from Berkeley, which explains the ordering a case of Ravenswood Zin, I guess. E: Sucks that Gallo has closed the Ravenswood tasting room and shut down the brand, doesn't it? Nothing but jealousy and venal corporate greed, if you ask me. That's why I left the Spectator and jumped like Jack n' Jill on the Chronicle gig when Jon up and left for England. B: Yeah, I figured you were stoked to hang out here in Northern California with the cool kids. Since you arrived, you've been picking some great Winemakers of the Year, and your Renaissance Winery article last year was pretty frickin' awesome, even if I did review it on Yelp about a day or so prior to when it was first published. E: Seriously? You posted a review on Yelp even before my award-winning story on Renaissance appeared online and in print? B: Well, you obviously had done, like, a ton of research on it and also interviewed the Frenchtown Farms folks and Clos Saron and all, but technically ... my Yelp FTR was first. I was kinda shocked when I logged into the Chronicle web site from the B&B in Nevada City where we were staying and saw your feature length article in the Food and Drink section. Great stuff, E. Really great writing, for a Smith graduate, at any rate. [B. smiles]. E: I would throw this glass of Ramato in your face, but I think I like it too much to waste it on someone as undeserving as you! [E. finishes off her glass of wine, then wrestles B.'s glass of Merlot away from him and does the same]. E: Time to hit up a few more of the Surf City Vintners, I'm thinkin. I don't get down here much, so I gotta stock up. Got anything else in mind, Mister Santa Cruz Mountains AVA resident wine expert? B: E., I've got a couple more places in mind that will ... blow ... your ... Smith girl slutty mind! E: F-word you, you incestuous hillbilly jerk. But take it slow, dude. I need some time to recover. [E. and B. both get up from the couch, wave their goodbyes, and wander outside to "Love and Happiness" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn9nTvjbTDE) as they meander lazily onto Ingalls Street, arm in arm, for another tasting]. [End of scene].

A chill adult hangout place in Santa Cruz. Yes, not open to those under 21. - 5 stars for ambience (live music, heated gas lamps, spacious outdoor area) - 4 stars for the wine (I am not a wine expert but the 2017 Pinot flights are on the citrus side) - 4 stars for the cheese board (a tad boring selection of Brie, Gouda, and manchego for a cheeseboard. But I did enjoy the generous portion of cheese with figs, almond, olive, and chocolates)

Covered patio.

Nice outdoor patio, enjoyed the wine and our server Marisa did a wonderful job! Ended up joining the wine club!

Red sangria slushy. Delicious!
E P.

Went here for a food truck event and we got the sangrias. Tried both the red and the white but the red was the outstanding favorite. Forgot to take a picture of the white. Customer service is wonderful and they are very attentive and professional. Will definitely be back!

Wine tasting
Katrina S.

Based on experience, I would give it four stars. Based on the wine itself? Three stars. The sparkling wines were not for me. We all got the mixed flights and the pours were all on the smaller side. The wines we tried in the tasting were pretty average. The outdoor seating was nice and we had made a reservation beforehand. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. You are allowed to bring in outside food and there is a grocery store across the street which is nice if you need last minute snacks. Overall, fun place to gather with friends but not my favorite wine in the Bay Area since there are so many options.

K A.

It all started with great customer service over the phone! Called to book a reservation for ten and the lady was so friendly/helpful . Once we showed up the hostess was extremely attentive: dragging outdoor heaters to accommodate us & keep us warm, when we requested seating inside in their beautiful set up she kindly moved us without hesitation, she noticed we had some low music playing on a phone so she matched the genre on their personal speaker, not to mention continuously checking in with us. We did a wine tasting, she kept it short and sweet. It was perfect! Thank you stockwell!

I do not see any menu. Is there a wine tasting fee? Do we pay 4 samples for a certain amount?

$12 to taste 5 wines right now. Pours are about 1 oz.

A tasting room with multiple bubbly flight options?! Yes please!…read more I knew Equinox had bubbles, but didn't know they also had a wine label and made still wines as well. They had 3 bubbly flights and 3 still wine flights to choose from, all of which offered 3 wines for a $20 tasting fee. They also offered a you pick 4 flight for $25. As a bubble lover, I of course had to go with one of the bubble flights. It was a tough decision between the sparkling white and rosé, but I ended up going with the white. Lucky for me, they also let me taste one of the sparkling rosés as well. I liked that they poured all 3 tastes at once so that I was able to compare each wine and ultimately end on my favorite of the pours. I think I typically prefer other methods than méthode champenoise for my bubbly, but it was still fun to try a variety of their offerings. They had a few different seating areas inside as well as some outdoor tables. We opted to sit inside at the bar so that we could chat with them a bit more about the wines. We were helped by Sue and one other tasting associate. Both were super nice, personable, and fun to chat with! Definitely worth the visit if you like sparkling wine!

How much things can change in six years. Except not atop Silver Mountain, that is. 2013 was just another year, one that blessedly was spared major earthquakes, wildfires, droughts, or damaging weather at harvest time. So, the grapes picked were good, and the winemaker was confident in his technique, and the results - while unknown at the time - would prove to be wonderful, indeed. Flash forward to November 2019. No Clintons in the White House, but there are great 2013 vintage wines available for tasting at the Silver Mountain Vineyards Westside tasting room. Estate Chardonnay from organic vines planted decades earlier using a highly prized Mount Eden clone; and a reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from a Grand Cru Classe vineyard, the fabled Bates Ranch, located on the Santa Clara County side of the Santa Cruz Mountains, close enough to Gilroy you'd swear there would be touches of garlic on the nose, but there isn't. Just rich, dark, brooding black fruit brimming over with brambles and flower scents and a minty touch of eucalyptus - not unlike Heitz Cellars' famous Martha's Vineyard Napa Valley Cabs, except at a mere fraction of the price (1/5th, more or less). Silver Mountain has a backstory like you wouldn't believe. Even I can't make this up. A WWII pilot who returns from combat saving America and much of the known world from fascism and Japanese imperial aggression who then makes a mint in the commodity futures trading business (which sounds scarier than flying an airplane in combat, if you ask me), and then promptly dumps a good amount of his personal fortune into rehabilitating an old apple orchard 2100 feet above the Pacific Ocean overlooking majestic Monterey Bay, high above the sleepy but quickly growing university/beach town of Santa Cruz. Years later, after rebuilding his home and winery following a major earthquake (1989's Loma Prieta), said vigneron eventually transfers some of the winemaking operations to an assistant, who was a Shakespearean actor from England who makes his own wines under the "Sonnet" label and who can quote from the Bard just as easily as he can craft a great bottle of single vineyard Pinot. At some point, this vigneron (let's call him "Jerold") decides to open a satellite tasting room on the Westside of Santa Cruz, as part of the so-called "Surf City Vintner's Collective," driven in part by the success of Randall Graham at Bonny Doon. That's where we end up, at the Westside tasting room, sipping 2013 vintages of organic estate Chardonnay and Bates Ranch Cabernet while Mark Knopfler songs echo from the stereo and a young toddler with his proud parents are quaffing Bottle Jack wines (the parents, not the toddler, you understand. We aren't all savages out here, you know!) across from the wine barrel table you're using to steady yourself as you finish off your 5th or 6th pour of Silver Mountain wine, and as someone in Washington, D.C. prepares to leak something to someone in the media about what some Ukrainian official promised to do for some sort of American shadow diplomatic fixer and go-between. Will a visit to Silver Mountain Vineyard's Westside tasting room solve all the world's problems? Will having a 2013 Bates Ranch Cabernet in your cellar for Thanksgiving help to drain the D.C. swamp? Or tear down walls? Or save American democracy? Maybe that's asking a lot of a single bottle of wine. Better buy a second bottle, then, just in case.

Instead of casually ordering from one location, you're handed a map, transforming the experience into a wine-themed scavenger hunt. It's like Where's Wino? But rather than simply being served, you might have to chat with someone, where you can either pretend to know things about wine ("Mmm, this one's red!" or "Ah, it has...grape notes") or really take the conversation off-road, diving into deep topics like their grandparents, tattoos, skincare, pets --it helps if your mind is like magnetic poetry-- as I print the email addresses of my co-workers on their mailing lists. (Enjoy the biweekly 10% off tasting coupons, Mr. Green.) Plus, each stop brings a fresh vibe. You're not stuck in one place. Each store is an Easter egg hunt for snacks as you sip among quirky socks, pet sweaters, and art that could double as motel bedspreads. Plus, you get your steps in. And, the event is on a three-hour timer if you want to catch every last drop of chardogrigio (I never rinse my glass), adding a sense of ticking-clock urgency to the fun. Compared to other wine walks, this one had only 12 locations, far less than half of what is offering from Los Gatos (my favorite), Campbell, Saratoga, and Willow Glen, so you may have to put on fake mustaches and hats to make some unsanctioned return stops.
