I watched from the second floor as they greeted every customer but when a black family walked in they were not greeted and the old white woman at the register turned and made a face not realizing I was watching her from the top level while the other employee followed me around. They have a lot of racist materials for sale all over the store in several displays. They have a large picture hanging with a slave on it. Ive read the reviews and it seems like this is a regular complaint and occurrence so I contacted the local better business bureau and placed a complaint. This is truly my go to antique store and I always look forward to seeing the curated display cases at the entrance and then spending hours exploring every little area. Building is beautiful, service is wonderful and I have never not felt welcomed. Everything is reasonably priced and it is most definitely the place I recommend to everyone. They're located on the first floor near the back right hand side, large booth. Boy oh boy do they have awesome prices and selections. I spent entirely too much time here, just perusing every magazine and pouring over every single shoe and dress. Near the front of the store is a booth specializing in handmade earrings. Colorful trendy also great prices. Another gem that most of the public does not know about is on the third floor. What feels like an old house go up a narrow staircase through the library and then all of a sudden you're in the blue room with all this gorgeous blue glass surrounding you. It's like color therapy. You don't even have to buy anything. Just stand there and marvel at it. They have a whole room dedicated to what was I guess a kitchen and there's lots of teapots in there. The prices are just fantastic. It's not like across the street where they separate a nesting doll and sell each piece separately insert giant eye roll. No these guys keep it real. Just the visual feel of everything coupled with the prices. It's so easy to decorate your home without even taking a second thought. Our youngest was still in a stroller and our oldest was holding my hand throughout the store. My baby started to get fussy in the stroller when the owner/manager approached my husband and said,"why don't I get out of your way since you are leaving now anyway." My husband asked her if he was being asked to leave and she replied, "I think that would be a good idea, don't you?" Meanwhile I had several vintage fisher price toys and puzzles I was about to purchase (around $200 worth) when I overheard the conversation and asked her if she was asking us to leave because we had children. She replied, "Yes I am." I again asked her, "Really? You really don't want our business?" She said "No I don't." I could understand if our kids were running around the store, tearing things up but one was in a stroller and the other was holding my hand. The woman became so escalated that everyone in the store actually left. Outside the store people came up to us and said they would never shop there again because of how we were treated. We had just been in Duluth at the antiques store there the week before where the shop owners could not have been any more friendly and welcoming to our children... so it was extremely disappointing to to be treated so rudely. I looked around and tried locating some nice matching ceiling fixtures at local stores, but it all looked cheap and was that offensive, shiny lacquered, brass-plated garbage that you would find in a rental home. I had used "Let There Be Light" for some other lighting projects and decided to make the two-hour trek to Stillwater. Although they do tend to be on the high side for pricing, the selection is nice if you're looking for period lighting. Both Carol and Steve were great to work with on this project and found me period fixtures with matching shades. Additionally, there are some decent restaurants and other antique-type shops to browse through if that's your thing.
