American Gothic Antiques is the best antique store in Stillwater! Have an amazing selection for anything from vintage toys, signs and furniture to little things that you would have never thought of! This is truly my go to antique store and I always look forward to seeing the curated display cases at the entrance and then spending hours exploring every little area. Building is beautiful, service is wonderful and I have never not felt welcomed. Everything is reasonably priced and it is most definitely the place I recommend to everyone. Antiquing is a rite of passage. Stillwater is the perfect town to do this in. In the oldest town in Minnesota along main Street inside of American Gothic antique is Estelle vintage. They're located on the first floor near the back right hand side, large booth. Boy oh boy do they have awesome prices and selections. I spent entirely too much time here, just perusing every magazine and pouring over every single shoe and dress. Near the front of the store is a booth specializing in handmade earrings. Colorful trendy also great prices. Another gem that most of the public does not know about is on the third floor. What feels like an old house go up a narrow staircase through the library and then all of a sudden you're in the blue room with all this gorgeous blue glass surrounding you. It's like color therapy. You don't even have to buy anything. Just stand there and marvel at it. They have a whole room dedicated to what was I guess a kitchen and there's lots of teapots in there. The prices are just fantastic. It's not like across the street where they separate a nesting doll and sell each piece separately insert giant eye roll. No these guys keep it real. Just the visual feel of everything coupled with the prices. It's so easy to decorate your home without even taking a second thought. If you have some time or if you have some time to kill, make your way to American Gothic and especially Estelle vintage. I promise you you won't be sorry. This is a great antique store with two levels packed full of unique finds. We love walking around both levels finding all the 'nooks and crannies' at different turns. The second floor is especially fun to explore. Prices are good and customer service is even better. This place is a a must whenever we visit Stillwater. read more

My wife and I came here to look for some jewelry recently on a Sunday. The minute that we walked into the store with a stroller and two kids, the crabby old lady at the front desk told us that that would be hard to get around the store. Fair enough, but what really ticked me off was that when my wife said to me that maybe we should just leave if it would be a problem was scolded by the man behind the counter asking us if we had a problem. Seriously, we just entered your store and you want to be confrontational? My wife and I were already embarrassed but we decided to spend the next five minutes walking around the store trying to at least shop for a ring. We felt like we had eyes on us the whole time and that they were just waiting for us to leave the store. The funny thing is is that we went across the street to the Antique Mall and purchased a $1,200 diamond ring. I think I was more ecstatic that my wife bought a ring so that we could "Pretty Woman" the awful people across the street! I almost convinced my wife to walk back into the other store and say that we may have bought something from them if they wouldn't have been so rude. Seriously, who does that? I know that the couple will probably never see this review judging by how archaic they are and they probably don't even realize what Yelp is, but just so you know young families do have expendable incomes and you never know what a person might want to buy so it might be a good idea to be courteous and respectful to every single customer that walks through your door. I will not set foot back in this store and will not spend $1 ever at the store again. Seriously, don't waste your time here. Go across the street to the Antique Mall where they are welcoming, service is a thousand times better, and the selection is bigger. read more

This is an average antique mall with tons of junky, rusty, dirty stuff. The best thing I can say about this antique mall is it has a LOT of inventory. There are many thousands of items for you to dig through and explore. On the other hand, it's very dark, cluttered, dirty, and disorganized. I didn't see many really nice things. By "nice" I mean a distinct lack of rare items that are over $100 or $500 or $1000. There are literally thousands of junky barn type items with a smattering of intriguing things throughout. I found some interesting paper and cardboard items that were actually getting damaged because they were stacked with other things - kind of a bummer to see antiques getting messed up because no one cares. One of the owners popped in on us several times and scared the hell out of us! I'm not sure if she was really trying to help us or if she was checking to see if we were shoplifting. Did we look like shoplifters? Maybe I should have shaved and dressed nicer! Don't be skeered by the name...yeah there are some antiques in here actually a ton of stuff. A lot of big pieces of furniture. The reason I like to frequent this store is because upstairs in a dark little corner you can find amazing bear prints by a local artist name Sue Rowe. I am a huge fan of her work and unless you happen to catch her at an art fair this is one place that you can view her stuff up close and personal and purchase. This store is tucked right on the corner of main street so as you are going up and down why not stop in here and check it out. You just may find a treasure and nothing is going to pop out and git cha. read more

Owner is a jerk. Crabby lady at front desk. Was in there end of August. Very hot in store, no air circulation. Climbed a few flights of stairs to look at items up stairs. Because of how hot in store and catching breath from climbing stairs, I pulled the Covid mask away from my mouth. I checked no one was around before doing this. Then I hear this guy so very rudely saying, turns out to be the owner, "Maam" you need to put your mask on. I said I was catching my breath. He becomes angry and mean. He told me to get out of the store and called me trash. Hey, yeah, Covid masks I get it, guy was a jerk. No one was near me at all, I couldn't even see another person at all when I pushed the mask aside to catch breath from cling stairs in his hot no airflow store. read more

My 6 year old daughter and I walked into the store today on our mommy/ daughter day. We had been in stores all day enjoying ourselves downtown Stillwater and everyone in every store we were in was kind and happy to have us. Within minutes an old crabby man came up to me and rudely asked me if I had read the sign on the door. I apologized and said I didn't see a sign and asked him what it was. He said any child 5-12 years old has to wear a mask if they are not vaccinated and asked me if I was vaccinated and also asked if my six year old daughter was. His behavior was unexpected, unacceptable and inexcusable. It was an awful experience. My daughter started to cry. He was incredibly rude. If he would have kindly told me what the sign stated and kindly asked if I could put a mask on her I would have pulled it out of my pocket and put it in her. Instead he made us feel like we had done something terribly wrong. I stood their in shock and then we walked out of the store. The most awful experience I have ever had as a customer. Not one person in any other store had a sign on their doors stating any child 5-12 years old unvaccinated had to wear a mask. I walked up and down the block to look at all of the doors. There isn't a mask mandate for children in Stillwater. I fully respect if store owners want that for their businesses but being incredibly rude and nasty isn't going to get you far. We left and I kept reminding her that she did nothing wrong. We prayed for him and moved on. It was a teachable moment and a moment for me to realize that I should have been more observant of signs on doors. I share this because I don't want any other child or parent to experience this. It was my mistake for not seeing it ...we were just so excited to go in I missed the sign (I have never seen a sign like this before today). Needless to say we will never walk foot in that store again. And if this is what is going to be required to be able to step into a store with an unvaccinated child I will happily spend my money elsewhere. read more

Super rude worker. Would give it ZERO stars if I could. I'm a collector and a parent. Took my son in to find another vintage Playmobil; he bought one there pre Covid. The woman working on our visit was an absolute grouch. She accosted us about masks and vaccinations stating she wouldn't get paid if she didn't enforce "the rules." My son cannot mask (and he's under 5) - we left. Took our business across the street where they actually treated us like human beings. In the past I purchased many things from this store. It's a shame for the dealers that rent there. They are losing out on sales because of her demeanor! I doubt I'd ever go back. read more

Boyfriend and I were on a bramble in Stillwater today and we ended up stopping here randomly. It's a super cute place, with at least a nod to rhyme and reason in how they arrange their stuff. There is a gorgeous kitchen area that probably was a small studio apartment years ago and has all sorts of cool gadgets/wares in it. There is also a great little annex that has retro clothes and some upcycled stuff that will definitely appeal to old movie/decoupage types. Their prices are also more than fair, with only some of the furniture really giving me pause. The only sadface to be had is that they close at 7pm, so for a Saturday, that's kinda early (everywhere else is open til 8). I like to take A LOT of time in places like this before I decide to buy anything and we had to dash out quickly with nothing to show for ourselves... will be back though! read more

I was literally just in this shop. My son was being watched like a hawk looking at coins. The person stood less than two feet away. The woman at the front desk was very crabby. The man who carried down a coin and coin holders never said anything to her about a ten percent discount for my item. Her excuse was nobody said anything. He carried my sons items down stairs and didn't even offer to take mine, gee I wonder why? People should learn to be nice in there maybe they would sell more items if the were nice. read more

I was in your store on Thursday the 4th of July. We were having a beautiful day in your lovely town. We walked into your store and enjoyed all the antiques you have on display. We were on our way out and a we stopped at the front of your store. I decided to walk up into the window display area and stood in the window like a statue. When people walked by I noticed how many people put the biggest smile on their faces and laughed and then I started laughing. When I came down from the window display area I missed the small step and fell. I lost my balance and went to catch himself and grabbed the shelf on the left side and broke a couple of items. No one in the store including the Owner asked if I was okay. All you cared about is how many things he broke and how much we owed you. You thought we were goofing off and acting like irresponsible adults. You have no compassion for people. I am very disappointed in the way this was handled. You asked us to pay $5 dollars and some change. We did not have that much cash so you told us we will accept a charge card for $10 dollars. How ridiculous it that! We will never return to your store and believe we will pass this message along to everyone we know. Reading your reviews online we see that other people feel the same way as we do. Although quite unnerving for the less graceful folk like myself, with the spine tingling fear that I might make a spastic or jerky body movement sending thousands of dollars worth of breakables plummeting to the ground, at no fault of the shop keep's, this store was the birthplace of an amusing game of what I'm certain will be a time honored tradition, of what we call "Where's Jesus?". It's just like where's waldo, but with..You guessed it, jesus. one might think it to be difficult to locate pictures of jesus in every room of an antique shops but fear not, his presence reigns blessings upon you from every corner of every antique shop within the area and quite probably beyond. This store has a lot of cool stuff and we come here for ours and our parents Christmas Village pieces but we will never be back. We brought our ten and five year old children who love antique shopping with us and kept them close to us at all times. As always, they were very respectful and careful with the items. The saleswoman followed us upstairs and proceeded to watch us, waiting for anything to yell at our children for. Our ten year old squeecked a santa squeaker toy and the lady immediately scolded her while I was right next to her. She told her not to play with the toys and to put everything back where she found it (we hadn't moved anything) in a very harsh and rude tone of voice. I understand that children in an antique store can be a concern but it's not a good reason to treat your customers that way. Won't be back. read more

I was very dismayed to see a copy of "Mein Kamph" displayed in a regular display case with no kind of censoring over the cover. It's hard for me to recommend such a blatant display of such a problematic book. Keep such things behind the counter as the type of person who would buy such an item is sure to ask. read more

Awful, terrible experience here today. My aunt and I were shopping to furnish her new condo with antique furnishings. While inside American Gothic Antiques she checked an email on her phone, unaware that there was sound attached. She immediately went to turn it down, but before she could the man who works behind the counter told her that she was very rude and needed to leave. She walked out. As I gathered my two small children to follow her this man approached me and yelled - yelled - that I needed to talk to my aunt about her behavior. When my aunt when back in to explain that she had been trying to turn down the volume he chased her out of the store and told her not to come back. He raised his hands like he was going to push her out and in fright she dropped a bag from another store and broke an expensive antique teapot. So disappointing - she was my guest from out of town and I'd just described what a wonderful town Stillwater is and how kind the people are. I'm happy to report that the other shops and experiences were lovey, but the owner of this shop is clearly an angry little man who takes his frustration out on his customers. We spent a lot of money today, but none is his shop. I'd advise you to avoid this place and spend your money at the other wonderful antique businesses in Stillwater. read more

Every summer, when I go home to visit MN, it is understood by my inlaws who live in Mahtomedi, that I will have my "Stillwater day", and American Gothic Antiques is always on my "must visit" stores. The variety of content and all the nooks and crannies to explore is wonderful. There is something for everyone, high end furniture, artwork, glasswork, all the way to the other end of the scale, which is where I hang out! I never know what I'll find, "new" pottery to add to my collection, a Parrish style print, a Vikings coffee cup to replace the one my husband broke, that odd piece of Franciscan Ware my sister in law needs for her collection, linens, books, old tools and rustic items, and don't forget the wonderful bear artwork done by Sue Rowe! read more
