Our stay at the Holiday Inn Statesboro-University Area location was OK. We had a better experience…read moreat and preferred the Hampton Inn Statesboro: https://www.yelp.com/biz/hampton-inn-statesboro-statesboro That said, the Hampton Inn is newer and it was more expensive when we compared prices for this visit. The Hampton Inn opened in 2013. This Holiday Inn opened on June 15, 2008. Both hotels have been around long enough to get their fair share of wear and tear. We stayed at both hotels in recent years. I think the Hampton Inn has been maintained better. It's nicer. This Holiday Inn is not to be confused with the Holiday Inn Express that's closer to downtown Statesboro, on South Main Street. Two nights in a standard room with one king bed cost us $418.12. We redeemed 10,000 Chase Sapphire credit card points worth $125.01, so the final dollar amount billed was $293.11. Regardless of the credit card points, it cost $209.06 per night after surcharges. Check-in time was 3pm and check-out was 11am. Breakfast wasn't included. Amenities included a gym, pool, and event spaces. There was an event going on the Thursday night that we checked in. Overall, I do think this is a nice property with a good, functional layout. It just needs a little more TLC. When we checked into our room, there was debris and hair on the floor throughout the living room and bathroom. There was soap scum on the standing shower door and separate glass panel. There was mold/mildew, rust, and stains at the base of the shower and on the wall and floor in front of the shower. So yeah, the room wasn't very clean. We called the front desk to notify them about the above. Someone came within 10-15 minutes. They appeared with a vacuum cleaner, spray bottle with some sort of cleaner/disinfectant, and a rag. We had to leave so we didn't see the cleaning. When we returned, some of the debris and hair had been cleaned up, but some of it was completely missed. Oh well, better than nothing. As a result, I never felt completely comfortable in our room. I didn't feel the same way at the Hampton Inn. I actually felt comfortable in our room there. A few minor gripes: (1) The toilet roll holder was in an awkward location. It was on the wall behind the toilet, above the trash can. Not ideal. It should be repositioned. (2) The Keurig coffee in the room didn't taste good. (3) The cable TV setup on the LG TV was weird. It wasn't possible to watch HD in full screen. If I wanted to watch ESPN in HD without the image getting distorted/stretched, I had to watch it in a small box within the TV display. As for the positives, there were several: (1) The bed was comfy. My wife and I liked it. (2) Our room, 335, was spacious. I thought it looked modern enough. My wife thought it looked slightly dated. (3) The room had a nice corner view, facing north and west, above the 301 bypass, Chili's, and the Statesboro Crossing shopping center across the street. (4) The complimentary coffee in the lobby was usually hot and comforting. (5) In general, the staff was courteous and polite. (6) There was ample, easy parking. (7) While not great, the Wi-Fi was usable and reliable enough.

We'd booked another hotel but decided to come into town a day early, and the other hotel was booked, so we stayed here for a night. I'm so glad we did. The other hotel (Hampton Inn Statesboro) was a nightmare & the only rest we got was the night at this hotel. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were great--they supported my neck and left me feeling great in the morning despite the herniated disc I currently have. My only complaint is that the people in the room above us stomped around until very late at night and kept us up with them. Well, that and the TV was very small and didn't have any streaming channels we could log our account into. Otherwise, the room was great and so were the people who worked there. Excellent customer service.

That's about it! The description online said "unpretentious hotel"; that's one way to put it! We decided the best way to put it was "Road Hard and Put Away Wet"! 1) It smelled really weird, like chemicals maybe? 2). When we opened our room the TV was on. ‍ 3). There was a hair on the bed by the pillow. 4). Phone didn't work (not that we'd use it, it was filthy, (I only wanted to ask front desk for towels) 6). There was spackle over large areas on the wall. 7}. The chair was absolutely disgusting!!! We put towels over it! Stains all over it! 8). The desk chair looked like someone ate the arm. 9). I went to open the package of clear cups and the inside of the cups were wet. 10}. There was dirt/dust on corners of the bathroom. We didn't walk through the room without shoes and socks on) 11). Rust and corrosion on fixtures. 12). We did not use the iron but there was a hole in the ironing board cover. 13). Black trim throughout the room was covered in dust. Obviously, housekeeping just did bare minimum and paid little attention to detail.

Built in 1914, the grandson of original house builder, still cooks in the restaurant. We especially loved the baked mac-n-cheese, lima beans, ham and fried chicken. Very reasonably priced all-you-can-eat at $12,50 family style, we loved eeverything. We were there right at the 11 AM opening, so I took lots of pics the dining areas, so beautiful. The waittress was very attentive and took excellent care of us. If the owners would scrape and paint the exterior I would gladly have given it 5 stars.

We were the first party in there for dinner and were seated in one of the many dining rooms in front of a window overlooking the porch. Shortly after being seated and getting our drinks we were served our dinner family style. We had dishes with fried chicken and barbecue chicken, black eyed peas, cabbage, mashed potatoes, gravy and biscuits. Everything was good, but nothing was particularly special. It was a good meal and a good price. Our service was excellent and we were quickly offered refills on anything we finished. The star was definitely the ambiance, it was such a beautiful old building!! I will definitely visit on my next visit!!!
