A friend and I were driving to Charlotte for a concert last night and stopped at Steve's Market &…read moreSmokehouse for our dinner. My buddy had been here before and insisted we eat there. It was a great suggestion as my food was very good. We ate on the Smokehouse side (there is a deli side as well that share the space and a unique speciality market as well). I ordered their "2-Meat and 2-Sides" meal, and chose the smoked Prime Beef brisket and pulled pork with scalloped potatoes and baked beans. Many other meats were available. The portions were good but the price was rather high but to be expected for this kind of restaurant. It was all excellent. The brisket was smoked and cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. It was not too fatty. The pulled pork was great too as were both my sides. It came with three hush puppies about the size of golf balls or slightly larger. There was plenty of seating despite it being very busy. They have a selection of adult beverages and several unique hard liquor drinks that looked interesting but I just had water. I'll eat here again. I would have liked to have explored the market area further but we did not have time.

Four bucks extra gets you chips and a drink for a combo (pro tip, the drink can be one of the bottles from the coolers as well) While you're waiting for that beautiful sandwich, browse the butchery for some prime meat cuts, the coolers are stuffed with local NC cheeses, smoked meats, prepared items like pimiento cheese, feta, hoop cheese, dips, eggs, etc... The back end of the store has a wide selection of craft beers, wines, hot sauces, frozen meats, and frozen appetizers. There's often specials from the butchery that will give you deals on chicken wings, legs, thighs, and some beef cuts. You owe it to yourself to stop in, grab a sandwich, chill, and treat yourself to a piece of cheesecake for dessert.

And if…read morethere's anything I can't find here, I can just go next door to Whole Foods and grab it there :) After they (and many others in this shopping mall) closed briefly for flooding a few months back, they reorganized and updated this site to be better than ever! Although it's a relatively small store, they pack a lot into it, and the set-up encourages the flow of traffic to proceed in a predictable manner, which makes the shopping experience much more pleasant. They are very well-staffed, and even when its quite busy, the lines for check-out move quickly (and they have a lot of lanes). The music is at an appropriate level, too, which is always appreciated. My only complaint is that they seem to have stopping carrying the meatless meatballs, which as your local vegan is rather devastating (imo, TJs meatless meatballs are some of the best in class). I'm holding out hope it will return as they cycle goods through, however! Bonus: The employees do a yearly christmas dance? A delight. Video attached!

This is one of the few places where you can buy frozen meals and actually feel like you're eating something good. They have options from just about every cuisine you can think of, and the food always hits. Is it the healthiest? Probably not. Can you do a full grocery run here? Maybe, but you'll likely need to swing by Wegmans or Harris Teeter for fresh produce. Still, when it comes to frozen meals, snacks, and quick bites, Trader Joe's is unmatched. You can fill your freezer for weeks and spend less than $100.

In Durham, our go-to Harris Teeter is on the one on 54, but we happened to be on Ninth Street…read moreeating at Juju so we stopped by this location to pick up a couple groceries before heading home. Based on my single visit to this location, it seems bigger and a little bit nicer than the Harris Teeter we normally go to. It also seems better stocked. We picked up a 10-oz box of Fresh Express 50/50 Mix of spring mix and spinach ($4.99) and a 48-oz container of Harris-Teeter-cut watermelon chunks ($5.00). It rang up to $10.19 after tax and using my wife's Kroger Plus membership (VIC customer), she got double fuel points for the month. The store was clean and on a Wednesday evening around 7:30pm, most of the clientele appeared to be Duke students. Not surprising considering Duke East Campus is just two blocks away. This Harris Teeter has both a Starbucks and a pharmacy inside. This is Harris Teeter store #394 and you can find it at the Shops at Erwin Mill at the corner of Hillsborough Rd and 9th St in Old West Durham. This is a relatively busy area.

What I recommend: Avoid ordering cakes from this location…read more We ordered a sheet cake from the Harris Teeter bakery for a veterans dinner this past weekend to celebrate and honor those who served. Unfortunately, what we received was extremely disappointing. The cake was poorly decorated and looked like very little effort or care went into it. When we brought it up to the baker, she brushed us off and said we could request a refund if we wanted, but that she wouldn't do anything to fix it. The event was only two hours away, and thankfully, the amazing staff at the Whole Foods bakery stepped in and helped us get cakes for 67 people with just an hour's notice. Based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend this Harris Teeter location for cakes, especially if you need something that looks even halfway presentable.
