Dr. Hargove is not a friend of mine but she is my gyn…read more The first time we met I felt some consternation because her communication style is not the standard fake nice that you often get with doctors. (I was there because I had had vertigo for 3 years and after trying everything else, someone suggested HRT) I was referred by my primary care doctor who had not given me a bad referral in 15 years. So when the first encounter was... maybe a bit ...stilted?... I gave the process more time. One thing she did that I very much appreciated was to explain the science behind HRT - which was more complicated than I had previously realized. She told me why she uses the bioidentical and what that means and how she actually administers the dosage. As for the medical part of this story, I got blood tests, I got HRT, we made adjustments - vertigo fixed after 3 years. Now to the personal bit which seems to be the cause of the low reviews. (if you can stand it, please read to the end because it has taken me a lot of words to say why I gave her 4 stars instead of fewer) A gyno relationship doesn't have to be friendly but it had better be comfortable... at least mentally. ;-) When I first met Dr. Hargrove she seemed a bit cold and I think I got at least one head shake or facial expression that made me feel like she thought I didn't know what I was talking about. It turned out that in fact I did NOT know what I was talking about - but the point here is the feeling. Normally that head shake/facial thing would make me REALLY angry and cause me to walk away, but I was pretty desperate for some help and most significantly, my GP sent me to her and he had never sent me to someone who didn't turn out to be great. So I went got the blood tests and went back for treatment - which worked. So now I was kind of "stuck" with this odd doctor whom I was not sure I liked very much... because I was NOT willing to risk going back to vertigo. So then what happened? I have now been seeing Dr. Hargrove for 3 years and though we are not "friends," I really like her. I originally went there for HRT only, but now she does all my gyno stuff. Why? Eventually I realized that she is being real. She's a scientist and a serious person. She keeps a serious face most of the time and doesn't nod and smile like a bobble head. She doesn't pat you on the head and treat you like a cute animal. She's like that person you know who only laughs at your jokes when she actually finds them funny, while most people will laugh just to make you feel good. Neither of these things is right or wrong, but you may enjoy telling jokes to one kind of person more than the other. Want to feel smart and funny, tell the people who always laugh. Want to know if your joke is actually funny, tell it to Dr. Hargrove. Eventually I had an actual scary gyn problem that involved scary instruments and flashbacks to bad things that happened to me in college and fear fear fear. Dr. Hargrove was, in fact, kind and patient. She listened to why I was afraid and she put me at ease and got everything over as quickly as possible while still doing what we were there to do. She didn't treat me like a little kid. She treated me like an adult who was afraid. If I had not *needed* help that first visit or if I had not been sent there by a doctor I trust (who actually IS a friend) and who knows me well, I might not have gone back. I went there expecting: ***Doctor In a Can!! See the doctor who acts just like every other doctor!!!*** What I found was a serious, real human being who is great at her job and who treats me like a fellow adult. She is compassionate but not sugary. When you leave you will not say, "I wonder what she REALLY thinks." You'll know. This may not be for everyone - but I'm glad I was "stuck" with her long enough to find out what she's about. I'll be moving away soon and I'll be sorry to have to replace Dr. Hargrove. (by the way **and don't like this scare you off** - if you're interested nutrition or are focused on avoiding GMO foods and/or artificial additives etc - Dr. Hargrove is a respected expert in those areas. She is the nutrition editor for multiple magazines and writes scholarly articles on these issues. HOWEVER, she has never pushed that stuff on me, and it's not 'cause I'm skinny!!!! Regardless of the other symptoms I was complaining of - horrible cramps, spotting for days, intense bloating and all of these being changes that were new to me. She ACTUALLY suggested that I might have an STD lol which was absurd after explaining I have been with only my husband for X amount of time - she tested me anyways and I did not. With absolutely no grounds for testing me for this or even suggesting I might have them based on my symptoms. The way Partners works when you are pregnant is that you see a different doctor every time you go in so that when you deliver, you are familiar with most of the doctors and the doctor on call will deliver you. I dealt with many nurses and techs and everyone was fabulous. I didn't have a "normal" pregnancy. At 16 weeks, I had an issue that landed me in the hospital. Dr. Minton was on call that day and he really eased my concerns and talked me through how to get past my issue. At 29 weeks, I went into pre-term labor. Dr. Brown was on call that day and she admitted me to the hospital. She was extremely caring to my situation and was explanatory about how the process would go. Dr. Jaeger ended up delivering my baby. He was excellent. He was able to lighten my mood by joking with me and he made some very important decisions that gave my little preemie the best outcome possible.
