The Stern Center for Language and Learning is an educated-focused nonprofit dedicated to expanding the power of learning. We’re a team of dedicated and caring professionals motivated to make a positive difference through our work for students, families, teachers, schools, education leaders, and communities. For learners of all ages, we offer expert tutoring and intervention to support success in reading, writing, math, organization, time management, and more in one-to-one sessions tailored to a learner’s needs; social learning and speech therapy to help people communicate effectively, build relationships, and understand thoughts and actions; evaluations to help people understand their strengths and challenges with learning, including any disabilities and differences; professional learning opportunities for teachers with the latest research and effective practices to improve learning outcomes for all students; collaborative partnerships with schools, including job-embedded professional development, schoolwide literacy initiatives, and consultations for student success.

Established in 1983.

1983 Center for Language and Cerebral Function established 1988 Renamed the Stern Center for Language and Learning 1994 Developed T-I-M-E for Teachers™ and offered one million dollars in grant funded training to Vermont educators 1996 Relocated to Williston, Vermont 1997 Building Blocks for Litearcy® launched and disseminated at no cost to over 2,750 early care and education providers 2005 Promoting Early Literacy Through Professional Development for Childcare Providers published 2007 Established the Cynthia K. Hoehl Institute for Excellence demonstrating best practices and underwriting instructional services 2009 Published Professional Development in Scientifically Based Reading Instruction article on effectiveness of TsIsMsE for Teachers™ in the Journal of Learning Disabilities 2012 Relocated to Cynthia K. Meet the Manager: Laurie Q.

As President, Dr. Laurie Quinn brings her expertise in nonprofit strategy, educational leadership, and innovative programs as well as her dedication to supporting an accomplished team of experts. She is a proud champion of the Stern Center’s mission of helping every learner to succeed. Dr. Quinn earned her Ph.D. in English Literature at the University of New Hampshire and her master’s and undergraduate degrees at Boston College. She currently serves on the Generator Board of Directors. A former nonprofit program officer and senior higher education leader, Laurie is devoted to excellence in learning and to serving with those who transform the world by nurturing learners.
