If I was any better at skating, I'd come here all the time - free admission, rentals only $5 (CASH ONLY), a pretty view of the harbor, and an absolutely banging playlist, what's not to love? Plus, indoors, a massive boon for when being outside for any amount of time is miserable, which beats Frog Pond. As it were, I spent the first half hour practically clinging to the thin ledge, just trying to stay upright, but still had so much fun. Some tips: 1. Get here early on weekends, right when it opens for public skating - 4pm. You get to be one of the first to get your skates; you can stake out a convenient spot to get on/off the ice; you can have more of an empty rink to play; AND you get dibs on the stacks of crates. 2. Speaking of, the crates are such a genius, low-cost way of helping people get the hang of balancing without having to edge around slowly. As with many things, the stability that comes with skating comes with some amount of speed, which you can't really achieve by pulling yourself along the ledge. 3. Watch out for when it gets crowded, as you have not-so-good skaters like moi, the people practicing spins and jumps in the center, and the speed demons swooshing around. Then you have some random citizen police (who are not the actual rink security keeping an eye on things) trying to convince you to let go of your stack of crates and to practice being out on the open, in the form of an older lady barking orders at me. It was super bizarre. Let me do my thing! 4. The surface got very chipped in a short amount of time, and it was murder on my ankles after a while. 5. Parking is very tricky in this part of the North End. SpotHero or the T are your friend. 6. Whoever was in charge of the playlist, I doff my hat to you. Have been here several times for open skate the last few years, with my most recent visit last Sunday. It's a popular rink that can get quite busy, especially if there's a birthday party or two! The rink is very affordable and welcoming, with skating being FREE and ice skate rental only $5. However, there is usually a very long line for the skate booth, both picking up and returning skates, so it might be good if they were able to hire another person to help out there. Also the skate quality varied, I've rented skates that were great and others that were old with no ankle support, so it can be hit or miss if you're doing the skate rental. I've gone here twice during open skate hours and have had a great experience both times. It's so nice that this place is totally free! I have my own skates so I didn't have to pay anything to come skate here. My boyfriend had to rent skates but it was only $5 (cash only though). Awesome rink with great hours. Staff here are always friendly and ready to help when needed. They have a rental station for skates if you wish but you'll have to provide them with your government issued id or license so they know you'll be back to return them. Not a bad idea. You can pretty much skate until you can't skate anymore. No admissions free which is awesome! free for people who bring their own skates. The rink is full of skaters but there are never enough to exacerbate your claustrophobia. Better still, the skating is free. Yes, that's right FREE. It's $5 to rent ice skates, but the actual skating part is free. And they have some of the nicest rentals I've ever seen. If this week's snow and ice storms left you wanting more ice, Steriti is the place for you - The ice is nice, the skates are great, and the price won't make you blink twice. read more

Being in Boston for 6 years already, I often feel that I am running out of options of cool new activities to do in the city. But after coming here for the first time and having a great time, I am really excited I found a cool new thing to do in Boston, especially in the winter time!! AND the best part is it's a very inexpensive activity. There is no charge to use the rink and skate rental is only $5. Plus there is no limit to how long you can use the rink--which makes for a great place to hang out if you ask me~ If you're afraid ice skating isn't your thing, I cannot urge you enough to come here anyway to give it a try. Don't let your inexperience deter you from trying something new!! As a noob skater myself, I was afraid things would be a disaster since I don't know how to ice skate. But here, you have the option to use stacks of crates to support you as you skate on the ice. I found them to be extremely helpful in learning the motions of skating without having to worry about balance. After a few laps around, I was able to skate without using any supports-- which was definitely an accomplishment for me! Plus, the staff here are so incredibly kind. The ice guards make sure everyone is safe on the ice and they will come up to you and offer skating tips to people if they look like they need help or want lessons on learning new tricks. It also made me happy to see them play and joke around the many kids who were on the ice. You could really tell they enjoy their job! Definitely recommend DCR Steriti memorial rink if you are looking for a fun and unique activity to do in Boston. This is a terrible rink. It looked large, well maintained, and the what they charge was fair. However, I did not get to experience any of the good qualities of this rink because they never publish up-to-date opening/closing information on their website! The schedule can change last minute, and the only way to find out is to call (if anyone ever picks up) or to go to the rink and read a handwritten note on the door that they put on. The night I went, public skating started at 6pm as their website said. However, the hours had been changed to 3-6pm, and the rink was closing at 6p. There was a hockey game, but that was canceled--yet they still didn't let us skate. There were a group of around 30 people who stood in the rink extremely disappointed that they had not known that the rink hours changed the day of. My group of friends and I actually called them to confirm their hours, but they never picked up. The only consolation I got is that I can write a letter to their "headquarters" which is not even in the same building. The management is completely useless. The rink has terrible policies, and who doesn't think to update the website when there is a change in the public skating hours?! Don't go here. You may never know when you'll be screwed over by staff who don't care. read more

I am currently learning how to skate here, and I don't think I could have chosen a better place, for a number of reasons: 1 - Free. Well, save for the $5 rentals, but free if you have your own skates, and even the $5 rental fee isn't bad. 2 - Not too crowded during public skates. Only a couple times have I thought I might run over a small child. Also minimizes the embarrassment factor, though I got over that pretty quickly my first time on the ice anyway. 3 - Five minutes from my apartment. Love this place. There are also beautiful views of the harbor, but I spend most of my time focusing on not falling, so....I haven't been able to enjoy that quite yet. read more

It's places like this that make New England great! Last year, I met up with some people to head to Steriti Rink. They said it was free and I thought it was a promotional thing but indeed skating there is free during public skating hours if you bring your own skates. Even if you don't bring your own skates, it's free; you just have to pay for your skate rental which I'm sure is pretty cheap. During weekend days, you have all these kids skating around but it's not unbearably crowded nor at any point do you ever feel like you'll ice skate over a kid if you're a sucky skater. Since there aren't a heck of a lot of people, the ice stays pretty smooth. Far longer than the Frog Pond. Oh, and bonus for those extra cold days is that this place is indoors! So it's warm. Well, as warm as an ice skating rink can be. And you can bring your own food and non-alcholic drinks if you want. read more

This is a fantastic place to go ice skating, the best that I have found in the Boston area. A short walking distance from North Station, it is close to transportation and great restaurants in the North End. There are floor to ceiling windows that look out onto the water, Bunker Hill Monument, and the Zakim Bridge. The price is right (free when you bring your own skates, $5 skate rentals) The man that rents out skates is very friendly and seems to really enjoy working there. Weekend evenings can get crowded but not nearly as bad as the frog pond. There are plenty of places to sit and leaving your things- I think that there is also a locker room but I have never felt uncomfortable leaving my things out on a table here. The best day to go if you can is Tuesday afternoons, they have open skate from 1:30pm to 4:50pm and there are very few people there. The only negative thing that I can say about this place is that one of the skate guards is always texting on his phone but there are usually two of them on duty during busy nights and I can overlook this since this place is so perfect! read more

How I didn't know of this place all these years is crazy! As mentioned by other reviewers, Steriti is a well-maintained and inexpensive skating rink. It's owned and operated by the state's Dept. of Conservation and Recreation. Skate rentals are $5, and it's free to get out on the ice. Note: If you wear a large size shoe, you might want to call them before-hand and ask if they have your size skate. There was a member of our group who wears size 15, and he was out of luck! I was there on a Saturday afternoon, and it got pretty busy, but not crowded. It's also a short walk to the restaurants in the North End. Open November through March, Steriti Memorial Rink is my absolute favorite place to skate in Boston - it's a close walk from the North End T station. Free admission, and $5 for skate rentals (CASH ONLY). Their skates certainly are far from the best, and for anyone who plans of skating regularly, investing in your own pair of skates is definitely worthwhile. Steriti Rink is brightly lit and large enough for a great skating experience, especially for intermediate+ skaters. The ice is not resurfaced as much as it could be, getting quite rough. Like others have said, I perhaps would have loved this rink but did not get to experience it - due to false information posted about their hours - and instead wasted an entire afternoon attempting to go skating. The advertised hours on the DCR website for public skating includes 3-10pm on Saturday. However, a separate pdf document there notes that on certain days, including today, the hours are only 6-10pm. After finding this second document, we changed our plans and waited until 6pm before making the trek all the way across the city. When we arrived, the rink was closed and there was a handwritten sign advertising a change in hours from 3-6pm for the next two months. This complete mismanagement and disregard for patrons is totally unacceptable. It would be incredibly easy to update online documents with the correct hours, or post this information on the group's Facebook page, Twitter feed, or even on their voicemail (which instead is full, and no one ever picks up the phone). What a waste of taxpayer dollars, and my time, to just make up hours on the fly and expect people to somehow find them out. read more

Hands down, the best indoor place to go skating around Boston. Gorgeous rink with huge windows looking out onto Boston Harbor and the North End, not overly crowded during public skate, and the perimeter is HEATED! Luxury! And you can get cappuccino and cannoli in the North End afterward. And conveniently located near MGH, which came in handy when my friend fell down and broke her arm. Well-maintained public rink -- indoor and friendly people. It's great that it's free if you bring your own skates and rentals were reasonable (around $5). I didn't see any lessons being offered the few times I've gone. The only downside is that because it's in the North End, it's really hard to find parking especially free parking. Your best options are either to come on a Sunday (parking a bit further) or use public transportation (T stations are a bit far). We went a few times during the winters and it was less chilly in the rink than outside (believe it or not). I don't think it was really that full when we went (maybe like 60 people max). There are places to change from shoes into skates and I didn't have to worry about my socks getting dirty or soaked, which means it was reasonably clean. read more

Such a great find! Steriti offers free skating during public hours, and it's only $5 for rentals. So cheap! A large group of us went on Saturday between 7 and 10 pm, right after a huge delicious meal, and right before going out to bars (is that not a great night out or what?!). It was so much fun, and the rink is beautiful.. surrounded by these huge floor to ceiling windows. There was hardly a crowd, so my party of 15 was really able to take advantage of the place!! Had a great time here. You do have to download a PDF to find out what the hours are. My friend wanted to skate, and I thought of Frog Pond -- central, touristy Boston. Well, that would have cost $14, and this only cost $5 (skate rental-- and the rental guy was nice!). Plus on Frog Pond we would have frozen, and this was inside, but still had nice harbor views. This was pretty easy to get to, Green Line to North Station. Seemed like a good mix of people -- all ages and levels and nationalities. Some guys showing off, but nothing out of control. I see another review said something about the rink guards, and I am wondering, there are rink guards? Anyway I enjoyed my hour here -- I really enjoyed the '70s music! They play fun music, the snack bar serves hot and cold food and drinks, and there is a bocce room where you can hang out to keep warm. Bathrooms and clean. Great rink and had a great time with friends here, and I've been here more than once and each time it's the same (which is good!). However the other night I overheard the most ridiculous conversation with a skate guard (yeah yeah I'm nosy...). This small girl had thrown an iceball into a figure skater's face, and when he went to the skate guard about it, the guard said something along the lines of "well she's my cousin, and the reason she did that is because you and your friends told her to stop cutting you off while you figure skate. she can skate wherever she wants. you wanna call a lawyer to sue her? go ahead but you were mean to her so she's allowed to throw ice at you. a wrong cancels out a wrong, it's all washed away." i was literally falling over laughing at the guard's argument. he actually then tried to kick the figure skaters off the ice! but they didn't leave as far as I remembered. so I take off one star because skate guards condoning throwing ice at people and using such hilariously immature logic is certainly worrisome, but it didn't impede on my own enjoyment of the rink. read more

I found this rink by accident when I was visiting Boston several winters ago. I was a native of the Boston Area so that I have ice hockey in my blood. I enjoyed skating in the public sessions while I was there. The staff were very friendly and when I found out that I did not have to pay to skate, since I had my own skates it made my days there. I also got into quite a conversation with the coach of the Revere High School Ice Hockey Team after the session. I even talked about my experience of living in Canada with the staff. Treachery at the rink. I came here to skate during business hours. This season the rink is supposed to be open until 10pm on Sundays, the hours are even posted at the entrance. Shortly before 9pm a strange thing happened with the lights over the ice: they turned off row by row but not all at the same time, and not in a flickering way either. It was as if someone had gone to the fuse box and was manually turning each row on and off quickly in succession. A minute later the younger of the two employees went out onto the ice and told everyone to clear the ice. I asked if they were just going to smooth the ice, but he said they were closing. I pointed out the time and asked why. He said he didn't know. I then found the other employee--a weather-beaten guy--and asked him why they were closing. He said they'd been having problems with the lights all day and they couldn't let people skate in the dark. At no point was the rink dangerously dark.This was clearly a total lie. He just didn't feel like finishing his shift, that's all. This company doesn't have the least respect for its customers and they need to find some staff with integrity. read more

Last weekend I went ice skating at the Steriti Memorial Rink. It's a great indoor rink, low key, not very crowded, with a nice view of Boston Harbor. I hadn't been skating in a while so it took 10 minutes or so to find my rhythm and balance again. Once I did, it was very relaxing. And then Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets" came on the speakers. There are rare moments in life where everything clicks and the universe feels, even briefly, at a perfect balance. This was one of those moments, and I savored every second of it. While Bennie and the Jets is a great pop song, it holds no personal significance to me, and it's not a piece of music I've spent too much time thinking about. But something about hearing it reverberate off the ice and the walls of the rink, something about the lilting piano and Elton's terrific falsetto... everything felt right. I believed very strongly that I was flying, invincible, pure, one piece of a larger and more complex tapestry. There is so much violence and fear in this world. You see it every time you turn on the news. But there's also a lot of beauty and harmony. In spite of our impulses to divide and drive apart, our desire to separate and be left alone, we're all here together. We're all responsible. There's something so affirming and magical about that, if you allow yourself to acknowledge that this is true, if you give yourself into a moment so completely, as I did last weekend. I feel compassion for all people. I feel a great responsibility to alleviate suffering and contribute positive energy to this planet and our brief time on it. I strive every day to be better, to do better. It's worth it. You're worth it, too. Deep down, some part of you understands this.
