We have 3 daughters (ages 12, 10 & 5) and this is our 8th year dancing at CTD. Over the years, we have seen significant improvements in their technique, stage presence, performance abilities, and self-confidence. In addition to their regular ballet training, they are also on a Competition Team performing various genres in front of a panel of judges. Being part of the team has been an educational, rewarding and a fun experience. This year Michelle has introduced Connecticut theater Ballet for those interested in developing their skill for performing arts which is very exciting! Each student plays a part in the annual Nutcracker to get us all into the holiday spirit. This studio specializes in ballet, an art of precision and exactness per the American Academy Ballet, Michelle invests many hours to ensure the curriculum supports just that. While I personally don't interact with them directly, her distress caught my attention. Despite her typically social nature, she felt ignored when trying to greet the instructors before class. The only warm welcome seemed to happen at the start of the class, which, in my opinion, doesn't feel very welcoming. I've also received some nit-picky comments about my daughter's behavior, like 'she doesn't like to share' or 'she didn't listen in class,' and given her age, I expect some of these behaviors. Moreover, in instances where my daughter was crying during class, the teachers didn't address or try to soothe her. I had to physically remove her to calm her down. There was even a class where a girl pulled my daughter's hair, and the teacher scolded her for pushing back, which seemed unfair. After my daughter started yelling, I decided it was the last straw and chose to withdraw her from the course.

My daughter took dance with the owner of TPDA for 13 years and unfortunately we felt forced to quit…read moredue to her lack of professionalism when it came to her students. Tried to meet with her and discuss my concerns of feeling forced to sign my daughter up for several mandatory ballet classes to remain on the comp team and spending in excess of $5000 a year along with mandatory fees associated with the annual Nutcracker performance, plus a minimum of SIX summer classes which could only be taken at this studio even tho my 16 year old had a summer job and vacation which means she would be missing most of these classes yet I was expected to pay for them!! The comp teams were amazing and won several first place awards and yet none of the girls were allowed to keep the prizes or trophies so this, along with all the mandatory classes we were expected to pay caused several girls to quit along with my daughter. I was told my first payment for summer classes was non refundable even tho summer classes hadn't even started yet. I will say the hip hop/jazz and tap/ballet teachers are amazing and could easily start their own studio!! But after 13 years I would have expected more from the owner who claims to be committed to what's best for her dancers yet basically ignored the concerns of several dancers and their moms!!
