She told me we'd be going to a park, but instead drove us to a muddy tree farm. Not only was this not to my taste, my younger daughter has a muscular disorder and CAN'T EVEN WALK on uneven ground. She kept falling down and was hysterical most of the time. At one point Jerrah said to her in a sing-songy voice, "oh, come on now, you can get up, it's so easy!" WHO SAYS THAT TO A DISABLED CHILD??? My younger daughter's hysterical, my older daughter's distraught that her beloved little sister is upset, I'm stressed, pissed off AND wearing high heels in the middle of a farm field and we're rushed through the entire shoot She mentioned the lighting would be really good in about 15 minutes (the "golden light" that's so pretty), then said she didn't want to wait that long and had to get home. She only took about 30 shots total, most of which were us seated on a filthy blanket in a dirty field. Owing to all this, our pictures were absolutely terrible and a compete waste of $350.

Very natural and very 'us'. I hadn't had any professional photos since then though, because #1, I'm terrible at planning and prioritizing things like that (esp without a major reason/event, like a wedding), and 2, it didn't seem like it was really within my budget right now. However, being on her mailing list all this time I saw that she sometimes offers mini sessions and I finally took the plunge over the holidays with my 4 year old. It was great- it was super quick and easy, AND affordable. She's great with kids, keeping them talking and smiling and posing all while taking photos rapid-fire. Since it was a mini session, I was just hoping for a couple of good shots to use for our Christmas cards. Instead we got so many good ones it was really hard to choose which ones to use! She is warm, easy to connect with and feel relaxed around. She has a very contagious laugh which I believe is a necessary asset in a photographer. She is great with kids and creative at keeping toddler's attentions. At a newborn session with my week old son, I wanted some bare bottomed pictures. As soon as his diaper came off he unloaded all over her. She didn't even bat an eye. Just chuckled, whipped out her own wipes and went right along with our session. She comes to each session with her own ideas but always asks us what our vision is. She is creative with her shots and editing but not so out there that it seems unrealistic. She captures moments that are unexpected. My little tot was not thrilled for one of our sessions. Older sister sat down next to him with a look on her face that could only be described as a preschooler eye roll at little brother's tantrum. Kari captured that moment and knew it would be a picture that would make us smile. She has sent us walking to our next shot location and stood behind to sneak photos of us walking and hand holding. Some of these informal pictures of our family are what we cherish the most. Kari actually cares deeply about her clients, which is why she has so many repeat clients who come back to her at their next phase of life. They looked like lovely pictures of real, happy people - not overly-processed and cinematic. This is exactly the type of style I wanted for our micro-wedding. I generally dislike having my photo taken, and I'm notorious among my friends and family for refusing to be photographed during events. In spite of that, naturally I expected to endure many pictures on my wedding day. Even with my reservations, it all passed so quickly and easily! No feelings of overwhelm, exhaustion, frustration, or impatience. To begin with, we had a Zoom call to serve as our introduction. My distaste for being seen digitally extends to video chats, but Joanna immediately helped put me at ease. She is an expert in her field and specializes in people who are less comfortable with having their photo taken. She offered logistical support in planning our day, as well as the emotional support that comes with having an ally who can understand your position and work with you. She is so kind and personable, which is perfect for those of us who are a little more on the timid side. In terms of the day of, she was already at the venue well before the rest of us arrived. In between taking some get-ready shots, she even helped my family member get into a very tight-fitting dress. I genuinely don't know if we could have wrangled that zipper up without Joanna's help! After that, she gave a brief lesson to my person-of-honor, showing how to properly fluff out my dress's long train behind me. Additionally, I noticed she was skilled with remembering the names of our close family and wedding-party members. Joanna is so organized and swift with her camera. Despite beginning our ceremony a little later than scheduled, she managed to shoot every photo we wanted within our tight timeframe of just two hours - with a few minutes to spare, too! She's also great at giving clear direction to help improve positioning and posing. And it all flew by so fast. She had our photos ready with astonishing speed (just one week later!), and they were just as wonderful as I had hoped! These are exactly what I wished our wedding pictures would look like. I'm so happy with the variety of different shots Joanna managed to capture, and I'm in disbelief of how well they turned out.
