My son is 6 years old and has a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy called Friedreich's Ataxia. He…read morewears AFO's to help him keep his balance while walking and help prevent Pes Cavus, a possible foot deformity/side effect of FA. We have been going to Scott-Larson for approximately a year. Two and a half months ago we took him in to Scott- Larson to have him fitted for new braces because his were too small. The doctor extended the bottom and said they were fine. Four weeks ago his Physical Therapist said his feet were deforming in the opposite direction of what is expected with his condition and that his braces were actually causing scarring on the inside of one of his feet. I called the FA specialist and he said TAKE THE BRACES OFF and leave them off until the braces are corrected. The braces could be over-correcting his feet. Keep in mind, this mistake could cause my 6 year old surgery, after which he may never walk again. :(( When I called to get an EMERGENCY appointment they booked us 3 weeks out. So my son has had no braces to help him walk for the past month and it takes two weeks to get new braces in. We have had two major falls without them. He busted his glasses in two and cut his head open on one fall and shoved a stick in his hand on the second. It is awful to watch your child struggle especially when they could of done something to help him (BRACES.) Today we went for our appointment. We were 22 minutes late when the assistant came out and helped someone else who came in after us. (AFTER we sat in an unattended office for 10 minutes!) Even the patient who came in after us had to go through the door to the offices to find someone to come out and help. Of course we were "too late" after all of this. They refused to see us because of THEIR mistake. They refused to see us but the lady who had to go track them down apologized because she knew what had just happened. To top it off, we were the ONLY people in the office for the 30 minutes we were there! They said we would have to reschedule a month out!! Seriously? I asked for a release form and said we would be switching doctors. When I called the Doctor to explain what had just happened, she passed me back to the receptionist. I called another provider, Ozarks Prosthetic and Orthotics, and they were able to fit us in the very next day! I am a single mother of three children. One with a horrible disease. I do EVERYTHING I can to make sure he has what he needs. This kind of treatment from a health professional that has my sons well being in their hands in unacceptable. Some Doctors care and others clearly don't. I would not suggest anyone go to Scott-Larson Orthotics. They are apparently too busy to care for their patients properly. I am not a person to complain but this shouldn't happen to anyone. Thank God their was another Doctor willing to see us so my son can get new braces that actually fit. Then he can get back to being as normal of a kid with the least amount of obstacles possible. Today, I created a yelp account. :)
