I always look forward to seeing her, and having regular lessons provides the structure and accountability I need to make progress every week. It's been great having a professional on my side to make sense of the endless drum content on the internet these days. In the past few months, I've learned to read and write drumming notation to dissect and understand rhythms on a deeper level. We've transcribed many different songs together, and then for each groove, I write eight to ten variations to build a catalog of my own beats so I'm not just stuck playing other people's music. Every week, we work on foundational drumming techniques, patterns, and rudiments to keep my hands and feet in shape. On top of all that, Carrie is always open to whatever new thing I happen to be interested in and generously provides expert tips and resources for further exploration.
