This place is legendary. If you haven't been to Steitz on the lake, you are missing a local favorite! The Steitz resort has been a love of mine since I can remember. Their homemade German cuisine has been a fan favorite to all those needing that Oktoberfest fix! Their schnitzel is to die for, and let's not forget their occasional Bloody Mary bar to please the Sunday morning crowd for those who beg for the needed support to kill what ails them. In town or out, stop in to this longtime residential neighborhood family go to for gatherings of all sorts! BROST! read more

I've always wanted to try Steitz's after hearing excellent things about their fish fry. We were cruising through the chain and found ourselves on the north part of it and hungry, so we decided to finally stop in. When you come by boat it can be slightly confusing on which docks to use, but we eventually figured it out. The restaurant is on top of a hill so you have to climb stairs to get to it. They have a cute patio with a few tables, but unfortunately they were full outside so we sat inside. The decor is really interesting and the restaurant has a cozy feel that makes me want to visit in winter. They have a selection of bottled beer and a bar if you want a cocktail instead. The drinks were good. Our group ordered a few appetizers - the jumbo pretzel, German meatballs, and onion rings. The jumbo pretzel was HUGE. They serve it with mustard, cheese, and honey mustard. The honey mustard looked homemade and was so good. The German meatballs were served over spaetzle and was also good. We enjoyed the onion rings too, and although they didn't come with any sauce the waitress offered to grab some for us. I ordered the perch basket as my entree. I had to after hearing so many things about their fish fry! Others in my group ordered the blue gill basket, BBQ chicken breast, jaeger schnitzel sandwich, veal brat, and chicken schnitzel sandwich. Most of the portions are huge and some of us probably could have shared. My perch was awesome and definitely on par with what I had heard about it. It was lightly breaded, nicely seasoned, and the breading didn't fall off. Perfect! Everyone else really enjoyed their meals as well. My boyfriend who ordered the jaeger schnitzel's only complaint was that it could have been a bigger portion, which is surprising considering how big some of the other portions were. They are cash only so make sure you bring cash! They do have an ATM to use if you find yourself in a situation without it. Our server, I believe her name was Allie, was great! The busboys kind of hovered over us and made me feel rushed to give them my plate, but we were the only table on that side of the restaurant so maybe they were trying to stay busy. My only wishes is that they'd exercise proper heath and safety precautions during this pandemic (most of the staff weren't wearing masks and social distancing wasn't encouraged) and that they'd offer some beer on tap. read more

The Hitler quote at the bar. This is a hard pass. Not to mention their bathroom was DISGUSTING. I can only imagine how dirty their kitchen is. read more

Well, this place is in serious need of an overhaul. Went there this evening with three German food aficionados. All 3 gave it a big fat thumbs down. Schnitzel should be easy to make and have taste great. Right? Not here. Each ordered one of the Schnitzel dinners. All failed the test Our table had been wiped down at some point before we got there, but there was some sort of residue still on the surface. Service was great, though. Oh, btw, bring cash or an ATM card. This is the ONLY place on the ENTIRE Chain O'Lakes that does not except ANY credit cards. Cash only. Evidently since Covid, they got rid of their credit card machine. Funny, I bet the owner(s) still use their credit cards all over town including at restaurants. What a stupid decision they made. They need to pay better attention to their food quality. read more

I feel without hesitation that this is the place in Northern Illinois for German and Central European style comfort food. Nothing particularly fancy, just very solid, satisfying and tasty dishes (please see photos). I visited Steitz's recently with a group of friends- everyone on the staff that I came in contact with was very helpful, welcoming and more than eager to assure that everyone in our group was pleased. It was this warm and friendly atmosphere that elevated my rating from 4-star to 5-star. Trust me that it makes a big difference to enjoyment of a meal if it is served with a smile and a welcoming attitude. I felt that for the money, we all got very good meals- with a decent amount of choices for both entrees and side dishes. Extras such as a trip to the salad bar with your meal were ala carte and also inexpensive. The Thursday special is stuffed roast pork roll served with red cabbage and mashed potatoes and gravy; add a dinner roll and a bowl of cabbage soup and you have quite a meal for $9.95! I should also mention that Thursday is $3 bottle imported German Beer special night. They offer a very frosty mug with your beverage which is quite nice. I thought it was very cool that the chef came out and asked us how we were enjoying our meals. That was fun and added a personal touch. I was also impressed that his uniform was very clean- I am sure that the kitchen is similarly spotless. I'd like to go back some time and try the Friday fish fry which looks to be one of the better bargains in the area. read more

Food is okay but overpriced. Waitress was friendly. They have a salad bar with crabmeat salad, cottage cheese, bean salad, potato salad, beets, lettuce and toppings such as eggs, pineapple, peas, cheese, crackers, and croutons also rolls, dark bread and a cheese pate, and soup. They give you a small "cake" plate and you can only go up to the salad ONCE and they charge $10.95. Their sandwiches are around $10 and if you want to add a salad bar it's an extra $5. The average dinner is about $18 and up and that includes the salad bar. The Wienerschnitzel was very good and a generous portion. Average price for three people one dinner, two salad bars, and one soda costs $50. I want to be fair but there are other restaurants in the area with better food more to offer on the salad bar and much less expensive. read more

I would rate this "joint" a negative star if I could. I can't believe the place is still in biz. I don't know what place those of you that rated the place with 3 and 4 stars. Couldn't have been Steitz. Maybe you all were at Bootleggers down the road. The place is overpriced, dirty, insect infested in the warmer months and even long before social distancing wayyyyy too crowded. Of course there were excuses, every one in the book, for all of those issues. I would hate to have come from Aurora or Chicago to end up trying to eat here. That would be a huge disappointment read more

We went to Steitz's for German food and the views. We sat on the deck for dinner but we're saddened by lack of maintenance. The deck shook every time someone walked by. The food was tasteless and not fresh. Our salads were wilted and brown, steak came with canned mushrooms on top, weinerschnitzel was too thin and over cooked, it seemed to be deep fried. I don't think I could call it spaetzl. We wanted something besides bar food and should have good to Captains Quarters instead! read more

If you want to try a different fish fry you have to try the perch... Canadian perch, I think that is the difference. OMG it melts in your mouth, it's very light battered and tender. Not your greasy deep fried cod dripping in oil. My buddy had never tried it and thought it was great. Try the home made soup! Most of the time soups seem to have too much salt in them for me. This beef soup with curly pasta was really good. You get a lot for your money as well. read more

Wife's nephew wanted to try it out. He really enjoyed the German plate including the red cabbage. Perch dinner was okay but wife did not like the preparation. Wiener schnitzel was pretty good. The spatzle was strange. Looked like macaroni and cheese...not a true spatzle. Salad bar was a nice touch but the lettuce was all the white inner core. Little green leafy outer shell. Soup was tasty. Surprised a German restaurant would not have a German beer on tap. Can't be that hard to obtain. A nice stein of Dab/HB would overcome some of the restaurant's shortcomings. Probably one and done for us. read more

Generous portion of perch for fish fry. Waitress was on cellphone constantly. Never came back to refresh my beer, not happy about that. Hope Mr. Steitz pays attention to his personnel . This is a great little lakefront supper club! When you walk in the door on a weekend night, your first thought will probably be, "how are we going to fit into this place?" The restaurant is tiny, and the tables are very close together. Their fish fry is good, but still not as good as in Wisconsin. The batter on the perch is seasoned and fresh. The salad bar has some good choices (not just green salad). The veggies that came with the fish were frozen. I'm not okay with that. The mashed potatoes are served with a tasty hunter-style gravy. All-in-all it's the closest thing to a Wisconsin "supper club" fish fry you'll get in Lake or McHenry County. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to try the Friday fish fry out as we like to support local businesses. The dining room was full so we were seated at the end of the salad bar. The first thing I noticed was the salad toppings were across from us and anyone who wanted toppings on their salad stood there next to us, giving us an unpleasant view of their rear ends about a foot away from the end of our table. No beer on tap, but the bottled beer was nice and cold. With the dinner we got the free soup and salad bar. That was pretty generic. We both ordered the garlic baked haddock from the specials menu because baked fish is healthier than fried, right? Wrong!!! He got the spaetzle and gravy as his side and I got the potato pancakes. The haddock was SWIMMING in garlic butter. Corn was served with the meal and it must have come straight from a can. The spaetzle was unimpressive. I will say that my potato pancakes were good and the only item I ate completely. We both tried to scrape off the top layer of seasoning on the fish but neither one of us could eat much at all. It was just too much. Too much seasoning, too much garlic butter. It was disgusting. Our bill came to $44 - 2 Beck's beer, 1 Mike's cranberry, and 2 garlic baked haddock. We will NOT be going back again. Extremely disappointed in this establishment. read more

Stopped coming here over 10 years ago but it seems old age has taken hold and forgot how bad this place is. My wife and I went last night for the fish fry and after our food was brought to our table we both remembered why we stopped coming here. You get a huge portion of fried fish. What it was couldn't guess. They said it was lake perch but it wasn't. The batter was the worst I've ever had on any thing fried even compared to frozen fried food., that's not saying much at all. Huge portion of bad food is just as bad as no food at all. You now also apparently get only one trip to the salad bar so fill your mini tea plate up as high as you can. The soup they said was broccoli cheddar. No broccoli to be found in it and definitely wasn't a cheddar base, couldn't taste anything past the tarragon in it. Service, while your seated the service was friendly and helpful but after your main course is brought and your salad plates are taken they don't come back to see how everything is until they bring you your bill. And the place wasn't that busy. The fish was absolutely terrible and I would have liked another trip to the salad bar but that was not possible so my wife and I left still hungry with a $40 bill to boot. Won't be back. Don't see why so many like this place. Experience we had over ten years ago was exactly the same now our memories were jarred, not to mention the owner was a complete dick at that time. Would have had a more enjoyable dinner at McDonald's. Next time we will do exactly that. Had to give one star so I could post a review. Otherwise wouldn't give them any. read more

Place is original and has this very historical past. You can just feel all the ghosts of the past. Their spirits are still there and visit with you as you drink and eat the wonderful food. Ribs are amazing as well as the boiled haddock. Beautiful view of the lake. Very laid back atmosphere. Heading there tonight. Miss the salad bar though. Hope one day that'll come back. Disappointed the no longer have the salad bar for 2016. The menu is smaller as well. Food still good, just not as much fun.

Three of us had dinner here tonight and Thursday night is German night and all German entrees and beer 20% off! Boys had Zwiebelfleisch...delicious and generous portions. I had fried shrimp...delicious. Prices very reasonable. Salad bar with soup excellent!! Service with Kelli excellent. Right on Bluff Lake with lovely view. Terrific german food. Great atmosphere in a historical building. Best liver dumpling soup ever!

Worst fish fry I've ever had. I've never once had fried fish that had zero crunch on the batter. It was like baked fish. Nothing was seasoned. No drink refills on little glasses, and our waitress never told me I'd be charged for refills. Terrible fried fish and WAY over priced. Will never return. Potato pancakes were bland and formed. Spetzal was ok, not great. Salad bar and soup bar were not even appetizing to look at. read more

I was looking for an economical place to slip my boat and decided to call Steitz; I was surprised to see just how economical they are. Tony runs the marina and is very professional and always helping customers. The restaurant has great food; the atmosphere is pretty laid back but they are always busy. Their food is always good and very economical for what you get. It's been around a very long time and shows it but it's clean and always fun to hang out and meet new people. Good food, reasonable prices, very low key atmosphere. Steitz's has been around a long time and is still a very popular place. The restaurant itself has a pretty small eating area, the tables are quite close together. The food is excellent! On a recent trip, I ordered the prime rib which was done to perfection. Another of our party ordered the Zweibelfleisch, which was pretty authentic, with excellent spaetzle. Our two teens went for the steak sandwiches, which were really a great deal for the portion and quality of the meat. Vegetables were just ok, and I'd like to see more green on the salad bar, as opposed to all the creamy stuff. Also, the up-charge for the salad bar is too high, in my opinion. Lastly, I'd suggest avoiding fountain drinks as they are on well water and you can taste it. But, all these are small side bars - the food itself is wonderful as are the soups and we'll be back again and again. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this establishment. Not built for looks but wow the food was good. That's all that really matters. This off the lake/up the hill joint was not one where I'd usually drive 20 min for but my dad wanted to go to a German place for his birthday. 2 things weren't that great but one wasn't their fault. Loud group who sat in the corner - not so great. Appetizers were forgotten but our waitress was so sweet and funny. Everyone got fish but me. I got chicken and loved it. Everything potato related was fantastic. First time tasting Spaetzle and it was soooo good! What have I been missing?! They all loved their fish and boy was there a lot of it. Salad bar was adequate. And they sang to my dad (he was kind of embarrassed until it turned out ol' loud corner was celebrating a birthday too.) It involved chocolate so you can't complain ;) read more

Went to Steitz's on 28 October 2012, and was disappointed. This is billed as a German restaurant but the decor is more in keeping with a Cracker Barrel style decor. Antiques everywhere, not much German decor. The food was so-so at best. We had the German Sampler and everything but the Red Cabbage was covered with gravy. The Wiener Schnitzel was NOT homemade. It was a commercially available pre-breaded product, The Roulade was bland. The Sauerbraten was tough. The Spatzle was cold under the gravy. The wait staff spent more time at the bar surfing the internet than waiting on the customers. Also they argued about what was included with the dinners that evening while standing in the dining area in hearing of all the customers. Very unprofessional. If asked would we go back, I must say NO. read more

We loved this place mainly for the view. This is a warm weather place. We sat out on the deck in the back and looked out over the lake. It was wonderful. The food is fine. Nothing spectacular. Food was good but not sure if we just had a bad server or what. The service was the slowest I have seen in a very long time. Took about 20 minutes for us to receive a menu in the first place.
