The tavern is located within the Seaworks precinct, where the Sea Sepherd ships are docked, and it can be a little daunting to find your way the first time. Basically, you take a left on Ann St from Nelson Pl and head toward the water. There's some parking along Ann St. Check out the creepy historic bluestone morgue and head through the adjacent gates into the industrial-looking port area. Follow the sign to the Pirates Tavern, take a left, and you'll see it. Inside, it's warm and cozy in a rough-and-tumble kind of way. The bar's to your left and the stage is straight ahead. They have live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and once a month on Sundays too. Usually music that appeals to an older crowd. The crowd here mostly IS on the older side, but children and families are welcome too. Zero dress code here -- if you're dressed elegantly, this is the wrong place for you. Drinks are reasonably priced and they have a wide range on offer. Service is genuinely friendly. Note that Pirates Tavern is only open on the weekends -- Friday night through Sunday night. If you come on a Sunday afternoon, you can also tour the Sea Shepherd ship docked outside for free. Win!

I had gnocchi with a cream basil sauce, that was nice, and our friends had Lamb Pie and Wrapped Chicken Breast. All meals were nice enough, but fairly pricey, around the $30 mark for mains. The whole place is decorated in red, black and some garish orange. There are two televisions; both are muted but one has the subtitles. Various pop music plays in the background. A game of billiards is 2AUD per round. The booth seating is comfortable. The (weekday) lunch hour is pretty depressing. Just a few people coming in from the cold and even a lady changing her babies diaper right at the booth! The antipasto changed daily and a plate with a glass of wine was just the ticket for lunch. I wish I could say that transporting this concept, along with Rosa, to a bigger kitchen and premises at the Hobson's Bay Hotel resulted in the same satisfaction that I used to have at Journal Canteen. Unfortunately, something along the way has gone wrong. The night I ventured there looking for a meal of loved-up food and good wine, I left sad and disappointed. Granted it wasn't peak season (when this whole town will be full of tourists) but the ambience of this place was...well... non existent. A big cavernous room with just a few tables filled and muzak playing in the background was soulless. The food was okay, but it lacked the zing and freshness that Rosa is known for. Then again, who knows if she was in the kitchen that night or not. The open kitchen at Journal Canteen used to connect the diners with the cooks and increased diners' appreciation of the food. This time the food's rustic charm in a more "fancy" location just didn't really work. The antipasto seemed tired and I desperately wanted the remaining dishes to save the day, but they just weren't that amazing. The service was woeful - a comedy of errors caused us to repeat our order three times to two staff members. An incorrect glass of wine (not poured at the table) was served and one of the floor staff serving us spent more time flirting with women on another table rather than taking care of the small collection of guests. We eventually left, skipping dessert, and walked to the til to pay - by this stage he had settled in at their table to chat! I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately left sad and disappointed not only for my dining companion and I, but for Rosa and her once gorgeous nourishing food which really hasn't found a home in this location.
