Now just called The Tea House (I guess after all these years here, they're no longer a mystery?…read more:)). Cozy spot with an extensive tea menu! I was impressed to see Chinese teas I don't typically find in tea houses (outside of China). Food menu is also impressive as well. I went with a group of five and we couldn't have ordered more different items. Seemed like everyone enjoyed their meal. They have both a cafe menu (salads, sandwiches, etc). They also have a traditional polish menu. I tried the golabki (stuffed cabbage with rice and pork in a tomato sauce) which came with a choice of potato (I chose dumplings) and salads/slaws. Very nice! Huge portion and could easily feed 2. Tasty hot stuffed cabbage paired nicely with the bright crunchy herbaceous slaws.

Really can't say enough good things about this place. I sorely miss it since moving away from…read morePreston. The range of teas is astounding and the quality (of the many I tried on my many visits) is amazing. Each tea is served in it's proper manner in beautiful teapots and cups. If you're not into weird and wonderful teas, they also have coffee and 'regular' tea on the menu aswell as juices, smoothies and other soft drinks. There is no need for you to be afraid of a new tea drinking experience though, as the staff are extremely knowledgeable (seriously, they know EVERYTHING about tea!) pleasant and very accomodating. They agreed to host my vegan society meetings and even made an effort to make the menu a little more vegan. I only tried one of the food items on the menu, this was tomato stew/soup with vegetables. I forget the name but recall it was Hungarian. Either way, it was delicious, just as I hear that all their food is from my friends. This ranges from toasties and sandwiches to more substantial dishes hailing from the owner's native Poland and other places around Europe. Other than the great drinks, food and service the place is nicely decorated and makes you feel a million miles away from the Preston high street. There is always some background music on but you would only really notice it if you listened out for it. All in all it makes for a very relaxing atmosphere, especially if you get some Yerba maté! If you're local to Preston and haven't sampled the delights of the Mystery Tea House then you ought to, right now. You'll soon be a regular. If you're just in Preston for a short time, you need to check it out before you leave.

Plau Gin & Beer House - Best kept secret of the restaurant - the well

Alright so WHO KNEW Preston has one of the best kept secrets of the North West. This bar and…read morerestaurant is the renovated and refurbished 350-year-old Plough Inn, which sat beside one of the main medieval routes of the north. Numerous historical figures have walked the halls of PLOU since then, and the building has been used for everything from a gin distillery to battle barracks. The new owners have carefully preserved the building and even showcase artefacts discovered in the cellar, where they also happened to excavate the old well which dives 43 feet deep. There are several levels to the building - each with a different function. The top floors house the restaurant, with wonderful dishes from all over the world (HUGE props to the chef). The bottom cellar is where the well is located (right next to a gorgeous bar). And then the floors in between are a cocktail bar and beer/bar stall area. You can rent out different locations of the restaurant for business meetings, workshops, celebrations and more. Okay now onto the restaurant. What a treat! PLAU offers brunch, lunch, and dinner. We went for a late dinner and were blown away. The beer bread butter, king prawns, and duck & squash were my personal favourites, but honestly every dish was lovely. So happy we chose to dine here and can't wait to return!

This…read morewas one of the only restaurants open after 8:00 PM on a Friday night, aside from takeaway places. We had to wait a bit to get seated as it was fairly crowded, which is understandable if this is the only place that was still open at this time of night. Service was kind of spotty. For the duration of our meal, we had 2 different servers, it seemed. Once the food did arrive, though, it was plentiful and quite tasty. The kitchen staff actually delivered our entrees to our table, which was a nice touch, though unnecessary as they wheeled the food out in carts that had to be lifted up stairs in order to reach certain parts of the restaurant. We had papadums to start as well as an order of the garlic mushrooms. Both items were good and they had quite a nice spread of various sauces and chutneys. For our mains, I had the chili paneer and the bf got the lamb balti. We shared an order of the steamed rice and a garlic and coriander naan. The bf also got a mojito, which was pretty good. The food was all quite good and we were more than satisfied by the meal. However, service kind of grinded to a halt by the time we were ready to leave. We waited a good 20 minutes or so before our server brought us our bill and then we ended up leaving without ever getting our change. Yes, it was just a few pounds that were never returned to us, but the U.K. isn't exactly known to have a tipping culture and we didn't really feel that the service was deserving of a tip.
