My family and I visited this location a few days ago. No one was there to greet us or take us to our seat. We had to make our own order using their machine. Once our order was ready, we had to pick it up ourselves. We were given a ticket to fix our own drinks and get refills. The food was subpar. The restaurant wasn't clean. The ladies restroom did not have any paper towels and one of the sinks wasn't working. The guys working were decent and professional. I have no problem with them. I just don't like this new AI thing. AI cannot cleanup, fix the sink, restock the bathroom with tissue, and provide superb customer service. Just being greedy to eliminate jobs. I will never go back to a Steak N Shake like this again. By the way, when we ordered, the machine asked us to give a tip. We did! I am trying to figure out why should be give a tip if our food wasn't even brought to us. Epic fail! read more

Stopped in for lunch last week with a colleague while on break from doing work at a nearby warehouse. The site where we were doing our work that day is not located in an area that affords us many lunch options, but after having heard countless radio ads touting Steak 'n Shake's Prime Steakburger, I decided that we must stop in to give it a try. The restaurant was pretty busy when we came in but a server quickly stopped by and seated us near the rear of the dining room. She promptly took our orders, brought us our drinks, and we were left to converse while we waited for our food - for 45 minutes. Mind you, it was right around noon and the place was jam-packed with various contractors on break, manual labor employees, and of course the regular business casual 9-5ers. It appeared that only 2 servers were assigned the entire dining room. We never even got a drink refill because our server was running around taking care of so many diners. Being on a work schedule, by the time we got our food, we basically needed our checks, and so did every other table in the restaurant. As for the food, our Prime Steakburgers were pretty good -- although our server totally botched our requests for various additions/subtractions since she was relying on memory rather than writing the orders down. We were starving so we downed our burgers and fries anyway, then began hunting for our server in search of our bill since we were due back to work any minute. With no sign of her, we decided to head to the front and see if we could get someone to print the bill for us. My colleague spotted our server at another table and noticed that she was making her rounds with everyone's check at the same time. Which meant, we were all due to wait in line and cash out together. It took us about 10 total minutes to pay out and everyone in the line seemed about as frustrated as we did. In sum, if you're planning on coming to this location during the work week lunch rush, either go before 11:30 a.m. or after 1 p.m. OR prepare to wait for very average service. read more

So... this was kind of a weird experience. I've been to many Steak 'n Shakes. I pretty much know what to expect. I expect the service to be a bit slow. I'm not expecting a 5-star experience. But this was... something else. We showed up after leaving Howl-o-Scream, arriving around 11:45--prime Steak 'n Shake time in my opinion and experience. We were hungry and wanted to hang out and get a simple meal and milkshakes. When we parked out front in the empty parking lot, we noticed that the chairs were put up on the tables in the center of the restaurant, as you would normally see when a restaurant is closed. We questioned ourselves for a second, wondering if Steak 'n Shake, famed for being open 24/7, could be closed at 11:45 at night. We decided it had to be open and went inside. After about a minute a server came up and asked us if we were eating in or dining out. We told her we were eating in and she didn't seem to like that answer very much but led us to a table... I should point out that there was only one other table sat at this point and no other customers in the establishment. I decided to just be super thankful and polite and our server seemed to warm up to us, acting more friendly to us as the night went on. That and the fact that the food was consistent to that at other Steak 'n Shakes that I've visited (other than the peanut butter in my milkshake being a little clumpy) were the only positive things, unfortunately. The thing that was the biggest deal breaker for me, though, was the cleanliness issue. Attached I have two pictures that I took, one of the crumbs littered all over the bench from the moment I sat down, and one of some mysterious substance staining the napkins our server brought us... I rarely give bad reviews but I have no choice. I have been eating at the Steak and Shake on Hillsborough Ave for 30 years. Ever since Covid the restaurant has steadily gone from bad to worse. The food is terrible, the burger I just bought was cold and the service is slow. It is very disappointing that the restaurant is so bad because they used to have great food. Wow, so I called this location and asked if we can place a to go order. I was informed I could do it online, so I did. Only to find out that we STILL have to wait in the drive thru line to pick up our food that was placed 20 minutes prior to getting there. So not only will my food be cold by the time the 10 cars in front of me get their food. I've wasted a lot of time and honestly I would have just placed my order in the drive thru had I known this. After this experience I'll take my business else where that actually takes their customers time into consideration. Get a better system because this one isn't working. We were coming back from Tampa on 30 December 2021 and were tired and hungry, so we stopped in to grab a quick bite to eat. We should have turned around and left but there was not much left in this part of town. We ordered our food and sat down, that's when we noticed how dirty the place was. The floor was filthy and most of the tables had not been wiped down. The manager who greeted us was wearing shorts and walked by several tables that needed to be cleaned. The food was ok but not up to standard of the Steak and Shakes we have eaten at before. I noticed that there were 5 people in the kitchen but, no one came out to clean the area. I sat to wait for my hot dog and hamburger. 25 minutes later I still did not have it. I went up to the counter and asked about it, gave them my receipt and they said "where is your order receipt" I told them this was all I had. They then made my order and handed it to me. Order was not correct. They fixed it and handed it to me again. I was hungry! couldn't wait to try the hot dog. Well, the bun was yucky, the dog was good. Later I ate the hamburger, and the bun was yucky as well. Long story, I would't order food here again. Maybe a shake, but I thought the food was pretty awful. What a fun, delicious-looking restaurant. And as long as you don't go through the drive-through, you'll be able to enjoy their food. My group of four stopped by to try their food for the first time. We were handed our shakes and a large sack of food. Time to hit the open road and enjoy some Steak & Shake. As we passed out booty the harsh reality set in of our predicament began to set. The driver was missing his burger. His wingman was missing his fries. My backseat cohort had the wrong sandwich and was missing all the dipping sauce to boot. And then there was me. The guy paying for the meal who decided to eat healthy. I stared at my salad trough the plastic lid. It was covered in sour cream and looked somewhat appealing, but since I was not given a fork I was left with two options. Option 1. Attempt to eat the salad and get sour cream, grease, etc all over my fingers (and probably on my clothes and iPad). Option 2. Pick up my iPad and write a yelp review as I stare at the steam from the fresh cooked hamburger on the salad rise against the plastic cover; tempting me to risk going 'caveman' on my food, but I resist. Why didn't we turn around and go back to complain? Traffic, no time. I wish I could have so I could do a fair review. As for the sparse items we did receive here is the report: Shakes - Good Burgers - OK Sandwich that was missing the dipping sauce - the bread was good, the rest was lacking. Probably better with dipping sauce. Fries - average, but far from great. No comparisons against McDonalds. Thanks for the experience - makes me appreciate the consistency of Mcdonalds. read more

Seriously the worst run restaurant I've ever encountered. Having worked in various quick serve places myself, I would have been fired immediately if I ever ran a shift as poorly as any one of the dozens I have witnessed here. Lines of people waiting to pay, waiting to be seated, waiting for anyone to even acknowledge they exist... All while management either ignores them completely to keep working on the line (aren't managers not supposed to be stuck in one spot?) or are outside on a smoke break. The phone rings incessantly because they ignore that too. It always seems fully staffed but no one focuses any attention whatsoever on the customers unless they are in the drive thru - and even they wait a lot longer than I would expect them to. I'm sitting here right now and can see the order screen and drive thru camera. Both empty. Five or six people behind the counter. Yet a line of folks still had to wait ten minutes to pay while one manager went to get a drink and the other ignored them completely. I wouldn't wait that long to pay, I'd just leave. No one would even notice! I have a high tolerance for BS and this place is really close by, plus I like the food... Otherwise I would never come here. Today while coming for a milkshake Jeff at Steak and a shake on Hillsborough Ave in Tampa, Florida denied access to my husband, myself and my service dog. My service dog is well trained, well behaved and was at my side and the broken door of the establishment flew back and crushed his tail. In his pain, he made an error and let out a bark but immediately settled. This caused the manager to come from the kitchen and yell at us, in front of customers, telling us to get out and demanding a 'receipt' for him being a service dog. My husband and I tried to calmly explain that by Ada and DOJ law a service dog does not need any documentation and tried to explain why he cried out in pain and the manager then became loud, belligerent and accused my service dog of trying to bite someone. This is a heinous and dangerous allegation, as service dogs are the lifeline of the handler and medical equipment. As such they can not be aggressive in any manner and such an allegation could cause issues not only for my service dog and I but future handlers and their service dogs. I'm shocked and disappointed in how we were treated and discriminated against and it my sincere hope this is not a reflection of the company. Please hold Jeff and all of your employees accountable and provide them education. Disabled handlers and their dogs deserve the same respect as any other patron. read more
