There is a wide selection of most gift related genres here, so if you're in a rush to buy someone a present and this shop is nearby, I'd definitely recommend having a peep inside, because you're sure to find something. There are some quirkier items to choose from, like a cheese door wedge (who wouldn't laugh if they saw that in someone's house...no...just me?) and other novelty gifts like a clock, bottle stopper or lip gloss complete with crazy design of some kind. If novelty doesn't do it for you, then there are also plenty of play it safe, people pleasing options, with some pretty trendsome accessories for the home and some awesome women's Irregular Choice bags. There are also office accessories and other manly items like cufflinks, Top Gear and Superman merchandise, plus the eternally can't go wrong option of a good old scented candle for the ladies.

I am an absolute sucker for gift shops, even if the purchase I end up buying is a gift for myself rather than someone else. Out Of The Blue stocks what you would expect from such a store; handmade cards, gift wrap, candles, cuddly toys, home accessories, toiletries and other quirky little keepsakes that make perfect presents and are also good fun to browse. As an avid gardener I was immediately drawn to the cute gardening tools on offer and had to resist temptation as I was actually on a mission to get a gift for a friend. I ended up leaving with a little set of cupcake shaped lip glosses that I'm sure my friend will love, they were very reasonably priced and the staff were really friendly and helpful too.

It also has a fine greetings card selection at the back of the shop. Ranging from funny, to arty to romantic this is a pretty extensive and impressive assortment. My Aunt, a previous occassional shopper here, was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour. Post her operation she enjoys nothing more than visiting nearby Morningside to purchase gifts, visit coffee shops etc etc...The kind of thing many a pensioner enjoys doing. On entering this shop (during one of her days where perhaps she wasn't looking her smartest), she was told there was nothing in the shop that would interest her and was asked to leave. Taken aback she tried to fight her case but was too offended and tired to take it further, she left. A couple of weeks later, feeling a bit perkier and feeling she was perhaps a bit more presentable than her previous appearance, she decided to return to allow the staff the chance to apologise. No such apology was forthcoming and she was again asked to leave. Perhaps, on her 1st appearance, she did look like a patient of the Royal Ed but, even if she did, no-one deserves to be treated in this way. Despicable behaviour by some very rude and stuck up staff. Don't give them your money; they are terrible people who don't deserve it.

This range, teamed with with dainty, ornate stationary, gives the shop an air of innocence, like the days of Winnie the Pooh and friends. It's got that twee vibe, but in a good way. Classic would be the best way to describe it. With the little yellow tags which the bears have in their ears, it is easy to recognise a Steiff bear, and although they are a rather pricey, they are absolutely gorgeous and this store sells a huge range of different bear designs including Winnie the Pooh, Rupert the Bear and Panda's. My dad bought me a Steiff bear from Hatches, Matches and Dispatches a few years which is gorgeous and currently sits on my desk! Hatches, Matches and Dispatches is the perfect little shop to pop into to buy cards, stationary or gifts for someone which are of excellent quality. They frequently have sales of their stock which is a great chance to grab a bargain gift.

Tucked in among these, and (currently) surrounded by scaffolding is a gem of a card shop - The Bay Tree Company. Cards are either too cheesy, full of unnecessary poems, or guaranteed to be the same as everyone else gets. We're always looking for that something that bit different. This is where this shop comes in. Whilst it is not a large shop, it succeeds in cramming a large array of cards into a small area. All cards are of a superb quality and cover a variety of styles as well as all the standard occasions. A bright interior and cheerful shop assistant ensures that you are always going to find the card you require. I have been more than satisfied each time I have used them. Cards, of course, range in price and the prices are perhaps slightly more than in a high street store. However, you are paying a bit more for a much better quality of card, and so this should be no barrier to using this great little shop!

However, I did get the impression that in the huge big room of stalls and stands there were only about 3 or 4 different categories of things being sold. If you're the kind of person who loves browsing stall after stall of almost identical-looking glass jewellery or silver-plated chokers with semi-precious stones on them then you'll be in heaven here.
