My pen leaked all over my bag, notebook and camera when I was out scouting today. It's enough to totally ruin your day (and camera). Irritated but undeterred, I needed a new pen, and notebook. The camera survived, thankfully. As it happened, I was standing outside Stationary Express at the bottom of Morningside Road just at I discovered the aforementioned unfortunate incident. Result, I thought. Well, in a way it was a result. Let's call it a 0-0 draw against a mediocre team. The sort of result that leaves you a bit disappointed but, hey, you didn't lose. There's a good selection here, and the woman who runs the places is very friendly. But, my goodness, it's expensive. £6 for a packet of Bic pens?! 35p for a single biro (you know, the 10p sort). I know independent businesses need to charge a bit more, but this just seemed a bit excessive. So I suppose I did lose. On penalties. read more

Why do you delete the posts with positive reviews yelp?? This is a fantastic shop, great prices, amazing selection of stationery, wonderful customer service and offer student discount!! My main review is in filtered please read it there. Disappointed they filtered my review but display poorer ones. Yelp you should be ashamed! This is a fantastic shop. I stumbled on it while waiting for a friend. Has everything you would expect a stationery shop to have and more! I even managed to buy my dads birthday present as they had Ferrari pens! I had never seen them before and the lovely man who works here spent time telling me about them and how they were the only stockists in edinburgh. That leads me on to my second point. The customer service here is fantastic. They seem like a traditional shop with traditional values that's the customer is always right and should be helped. I'm almost entirely sure that this is the only stationery shop on Morningside Road. It's a traditional independent stationery shop, meaning you won't find any Paperchase style designs here. - Everything is very minimal and plain. And, I get it, if stationery is for work, that's kind of what people want. Although, if I had it my way, it'd be rainbow and unicorn adorned petty cash slips... I recently popped in for a stationery replenishment for work and got just what I was after. I'm quite money conscious because we're a charity so I made the jaunt up and down Morningside road and got what I could from the supermarkets. I struggled with finding duplicate books there so I popped in here. I was also looking for a roomy fold-out folder with adequate space. I bought one and it was a tad prices at £4.69! It wasn't especially sturdy, and when I took it back I realised it wasn't quite fit for the job I'd bought it for. So, I popped back over to see if a refund would be possible. Ordinarily, it would have been a credit slip but since we're a charity, the man was kind enough to refund the full amount. I think it should be their policy to offer refunds, especially in instances like today, where the packaging was still intact and the product had clearly not been used. Sometimes you get home and see that, on second thoughts, what you bought is just not what you were after. I was humming and hawing in the shop whilst I weighed up the options in the shop. The man in the shop was helpful but not overwhelmingly friendly. I'd pop back in here for work since it's the only shop of its kind in the area. But for my personal stationery needs, I need a dose of brightness that can be found in various stationery shops across town. read more

In theory I like the idea of supporting smaller, local businesses. My experience here make me regret trying to follow through on that. When I tried to pay with a swipe & sign Visa (instead of a chip & pin) the nice lady checking me out ran the transaction successfully only to have her co-worker (manager I suppose) stop her abruptly and then turn on me to complain about the "walloping" charge they incur when they accept swipe & sign cards. There are two things about this that are loathsome. First, I was buying 4 standard, mass-produced, not-at-all special writing pens for £10. No charge could be more "walloping" than that - such over-pricing! Second, according to my credit card company, when a business agrees to accept Visa, part of their contract is to accept all types of Visa's. Any associated charges are simply part of the overhead of running a business that chooses to accept credit cards. It's tacky to shunt that responsiblity and complain about it to your customer who is trying to do you the favor of patronizing your store. And therein lies the problem, I got the sense this particular business thought it was doing *me* a favor by selling overpriced pens. You've got it backwards, Stationary Express, but thanks for rescuing me from some truly *walloping* charges. read more

Popped into this shop to buy stationery for my son going back to school. Was great to be able to get the triangle pencils that were asked for by the school yet very hard to find. There was a good selection of stock and my son really enjoyed looking and buying stationery. The prices were fair and i felt the quality was better than in tesco. I hate cheap stationery. I was particularly taken by the design of the Lammie pens they had in this shop. So couldn't help but treat myself. The man who was working was very helpful and took time to show me the pen range and listen to what i needed it for. Will definitely be back to this wee shop. What a fantastic shop. It was so refreshing to come across a really good stationer. (they just dont seem to be around anymore). This shop has almost everything you could need and if they don't have it they get it in for you the next day. I could'nt beleive my luck. I had been after type writter ribbon for months and although they didnt have it in stock the man who worked there ordered it in for me and i had it the very next day. I was so pleased with my service here that i always buy my stationery here. It trully is a wonderful shop which provides products great quality products at really good prices. I do not understand how the review above can complain about 35p for a bic pen i mean come on its a branded pen.. This shop is not expensive. I love this shop. It trully is wonderful to have a shop dedicated to selling great stationery on my door step! Would definately reccommend a visit!! read more
