summer of 2020, outside of the theater

Spent so many years walking past this theater planning on one day seeing a movie. So come Valentine's day of 2019, we got tickets to see Dirty Dancing! We were not disappointed in the slightest. We had an "I carried a watermelon" drink and it was delicious. Unfortunately, the covid shutdown happened weeks after visiting and we have been unable to visit since then. We remember the one night that we spent here very fondly and cannot wait to return!!

The State Theatre is a must to add to your local adventures. They have a gorgeously renovated theater with lots of seats and a balcony. Not a bad seat in the house!! It is volunteer run and they are always so positive and upbeat. We just went and saw the Mary Poppins movie and the foyer was adorably decorated on theme. Concessions don't have s took of options but what they do have is good. Popcorn is great and not crazy expensive like AMC. We paid $4 for s generously sized medium and couldn't finish it between the two of us. Make sure you look up and check out the ceiling when you're there.

Against all odds, the State Theater has flourished... Before: 1. 92 year old, ailing movie house. Outdated, unloved. Falling apart. 2. Deed restriction that only allows it to show movies that are released in less than 200 theaters nationwide (read: indie films, etc) 3. Little interest in restoring it to its former glory. Now: With a little (lot) of work by the Traverse City Film Festival...this place is absolutely one of the hottest, most-loved destinations in Traverse City. It has reincarnated downtown. The bright, shiny marquee is an homage to all that worked so hard to bring it back to life, and all that attend to keep it thriving... Hands down the best movie theater I've ever encountered. Yes, just one screen...but no detail was overlooked. Plush red seats, red velvet curtain, a starry night (real lights) on the ceiling above, beautiful paint and columns, an impressive balcony...it's just world class, and I am not one to gush about the nightlife/entertainment in TC, obviously. Inexpensive (even relative to the other big box movie places in town). We saw It's a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve for $5 each, and it was just a sweet, simple, awesome experience.... Vintage, passionate, artsy, entertaining... Make it a point to visit on your next trip...it will indeed be worth it.

We're visiting Traverse City for Spring Break and stumbled upon free movie week! It's a cute theater with all volunteers working. There are stars on the ceiling and the seats are plush and comfortable! Also the concessions are super cheap! Nothing like what we pay in Chicago. We saw two movies and had a great time. We would definitely come here again when we're in town.

Quintessential Traverse City landmark directly in the middle of Main Street. Old time theater with good prices. Special movies for kids Saturday morning for next to nothing prices. Special events for Spring Break wonderful.

This is by far the best movie theater I have ever been to. My BF loves movies so we frequent theaters fairly often. I have never been to a cleaner, cooler theater than the State though. Honestly, we want to move to Traverse and one of the pros (high on the list I might add) is the State Theater...no joke. I am sorry that we didn't see a movie here last year. I don't know the full history but I do know that the State Theater is a one screen, bi level theater. We sat up in the balcony for our movie (The Kings of Summer, which was great by the way). I absolutely loved the twinkling stars on the ceiling and the seats are the most comfortable movie theater seat my butt has ever sat in. On our 6+ hour drive home I wish I had one of those seats to sit in! The theater is meticulously clean. There was a show before ours and they were vacuuming and cleaning up to the point where I saw one guy actually pick up a piece of popcorn that his broom missed. No sticky floors here!! I am not sure if the State has paid employees but they did mention that there are volunteers which I think is so cool. The opening montage and all of the opening "trailers" were seriously awesome... I wish I would have snuck and made a Vine but I was too focused on not missing anything. Oh, and the concessions are super cheap...the way it should be!!! There are also tons of specials such as free popcorn day, 25 cent specials, free teen movies and the regular admission is also super cheap ($6 students, $8 adults). I guess they can keep prices down as they aren't showing big blockbuster new releases. If you are in Traverse City, you NEED to see a movie at the State Theater. You won't be disappointed.

What a pleasant surprise. It was matinee pricing so tickets are EXTRA cheap. I didn't believe the guy when he told us what we owed and I had to confirm with him that yes, it was indeed the price for 3D. Even further discounts given if you're a student, in the military, a senior (60+), or a child (3-12). Concessions are also priced very reasonably. Theater is very cute and charming looking, both inside and out. It's right off the main street. Our ticket seller was very friendly and chatted us up a bit. They're forced to wear black formal attire so that kind of snazzes up the place. Comfortable seating, no complaints about our movie experience. Perk about seeing movies here are there a ton of commercials for local businesses shown some of which are wow, just no words. Pretty amazing to watch though. You get the impression this is a tight knit community. It was cute though because I walked by a candy shop just minutes before and recognized the owner after seeing him in the commercial for his shop. Pretty nifty!

A great concession stand that isn't over priced or ridiculous like modern movie theaters (seriously--a bucket of popcorn for $3? A jumbo soda for $2? Insane) and they carry more than just popcorn. Candy, caramel apples, ice cream, milk shakes, a variety of fried foods including funnel cake. The place just smells awesome. Old neon signs adorn the walls as well as photos of classic Hollywood stars. Neato! Each night your entrance fee buys you into a double feature. Usually it's a kid's movie first followed by a grown up feature. This past weekend it was two adult films-- Salt and Grown Ups. You pull your car into the slot and you have the old fashioned speakers hanging next to your car should you choose them. I'm a mosquito magnet so leaving the windows open would just not do so we opted to listen to the radio feed that runs over a local FM station. Right in front of the screen are swings and a few playground pieces for kids to play around in. Some folks choose to sit on blankets outside of their cars. However you feel most comfortable you can go for it at the Cherry Bowl. The show begins after dusk and before the first film they make special occasion announcements and everyone lays down on the horn in congratulations of birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, etc. So cute! Then they play an old cartoon short (e.g. an old Disney Mickey Mouse short) and then the first feature film. Following that is a classic intermission with old "let's all go to the lobby" reels, commercials for mosquito repellant and pickles. Really awesome old timey stuff. Then the second feature beings. We were exhausted and not particularly interested in seeing Grown Ups so we made sure to stick out for the awesome intermission and took off after. If you're up in the Leelanau area I highly recommend this wonderful blast from the past. The films never go over pg-13 so it's usually kid friendly faire and fun for all ages!
