My experience at State Street Tony's was a very good one. I enjoy restaurants that take on an older ambiance. The food portion were really good size and the service was spot on wonderful. I ordered the grilled cheese with Italian bread, and a large french fries with ranch on the side. The Italian bread on the grilled cheese had a good flavor but the cheese was very thin and made with processed cheese. The bread to "cheese" ratio made the sandwich super dry and unsatisfying. My french fries were placed in a paper bag without a takeout container, making it a solid lump of greasy soggy mess. The amount of fries and how it was served made it inedible and was ridiculously wasteful for the restaurant and the customer. One takeout container of fries would've solved that problem. And finally, the 2 ranches I ordered were missing from the order. It's not likely I will be back or recommend this place to anyone. Sorry, but this was a very simple order and it takes an incredible lack of care to screw it up. read more

We were staying at a local hotel and their Continental breakfast was inedible, so we looked online to find some place else to go. My sister found Tony's, I remembered passing it, so we decided to go. They do quite the business. LOTS of carryout orders -- perhaps more than dine in. But, the problem with this is that they seemed to prioritize the orders being picked up. We must have waited a half hour for our meals. But...the servers were friendly, and one would occasionally burst into whatever song was playing on the radio. I ordered the eggs and sausage biscuit with gravy. It was pretty good and very reasonably priced. The iced tea did not taste freshly made, though; I'm guessing it was probably a mix. Still, this is a great little neighborhood diner and I'm sure that, if I lived near here, I'd be back. read more

I patronized this lactation a couple weeks before and cancelled the order, because I waited over an hour and the food was still not prepared. I will never go to this location again. We both ordered the western omelette add jalapeno. Food came out and I said oh we wanted jalapeno because they put banana peppers on them instead. The waitress said oh I think he out of jalapeno. So you just assumed we wanted banana peppers? just irritated she didn't ask us first. Had she, I would have said no. One of the OG Tony's locations in Saginaw. My go to is a steak and cheese with mozz and mushrooms, grilled, with an order of onion rings. Absolutely nothing healthy or low calorie, it has to be a day of hard work or not giving a single eff and just enjoying it for what it is. Dad recommended a late breakfast/early lunch here for our first day visiting michigan. He used to eat here while growing up in the 70s. I can see why. Call it nostalgia, solid choices (for breakfast at least), or overall good value, but whenever I am back in town, my father and I make a point to stop by for breakfast. What other restaurant can you still get a coffee for around $1 or 3 eggs and toast for $3? The cook will even poach the eggs! Overall, the place has the food you would expect for the price. If you want something fancier, there are plenty of other restaurants to go to, but if you're looking for a great value, superb service, and dependable food, I'd recommend this place to start your day. read more

Decided to try Tony's again after 2 years. Realized why I stopped visiting this location. A Door Dash employee was waiting for food. She asked for an update and the food prep staff started going off on her...while she was standing there and more after she left. One of the waitresses mentioned they were unprofessional and loud. One prep staff person mentioned he didn't give a %#*% and she should stop coming here. Very classy prep staff. The last time we were here, it took 1 1/2 hours to get food and there was only two other customers here. Used to be good food but the employees do not care about anyone but themselves. Stepped in the door, saw an open table and was going to sit down when the worker standing in the kitchen doorway said, " We are an hour out for food orders! - an hour out!" He just stood there looking at us and waiting for us to leave. We turn around and walk out and another table got up and did the same. The whole back area was closed off and no seating was allowed which left very few tables to wait on. There was an open table, why would they not want to feed you? He could have said they were short staffed, overwhelmed with take out or anything else. I have eaten there many times over the past 30+ years and will never go back. read more

I was in Saginaw for a wedding and had a couple of hours to kill, so I decided to try out whatever restaurant had some good reviews on Yelp. Stumbling upon Tony's was great since downtown Saginaw is a little more barren than most downtowns. The place has that family owned, no muss no fuss charm to it. Everyone looks like a regular, and they all know just what to order: Great Steak with pizza cheese and Mushrooms Sandwich. It was a monstrous sandwich (mostly thanks to the large slices of thick Italian Bread, which i would have liked buttered and toasted, and if not that, at least toasted... it doesn't seem right to put cold bread on a hot sandwich, but that's how they eat it there!) The steak patties was delicious with marinara and mushrooms piled high... although i do have a gripe about the mushrooms too: they definitely weren't freshly sauteed, more like sliced canned mushrooms. The sandwich was still good overall, but I would have liked 1) The bread toasted and 2) fresh sauteed mushrooms, those two things would have made the sandwich EVEN better! The fried mushrooms were perfect though! I saw some other people around us ordering their pizza's and breakfast items....they all looked delicious. This shit was trash. Let me start by saying I typically have eaten from a lot of good and bad places and my stomach can typically hold anything down. Anyways, my boo went to go get us breakfast as a carry out. I had scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon, and American fries with toast. Immediately when she got here we could both tell something was burnt in the bag. When we opened up everything, turned out it was the American fries with the string burnt smell. One side was pure black, while the other side was clearly undercooked. The bacon was hard yet under cooked on the edges and the eggs with cheese were soooo runny. It was absolutely rough to eat. How you still melt cheese but undercook eggs is beyond me. The crazy part is as soon as I finished, I immediately threw it all up. I felt fine before I ate the food and felt fine after I threw it up. I don't know how people typically feel about their food but don't buy breakfast from an Italian restaurant. I'll never get anything from there again. Even if it's free. read more

This is a good, local and authentic Italian-inspired diner with an old middle American working class charm to it. There's breakfast, some pasta dishes, VERY yummy looking NY-Style pizza, burgers, sandwiches and some nice dessert treats on the menu (among other stuff). As it was my first time here, I made sure to order what the place is best known for, their "Great Steak w/pizza cheese & mushrooms Sandwich." It had big soft authentic Italian bread on it - very big, thick sliced, fresh and hard outer rim crust. The bread is not toasted or buttered - which some may complain about, but I think it's more authentic this way. Personally the main drawback to the huge Italian bread on the sandwich is that you need more meat in the sandwich to make up for it. If you don't wanna cough up the extra money, then you can request smaller sliced bread. The sandwich has "pizza cheese" (mozzarella?), tons of mushrooms, and a decent sized juicy ground steak patty on it. It was all brought together in the sandwich with their house "red sauce" which seems to be nothing more special than some mediocre marinara sauce. The sandwich was pretty good but with the bread being sliced so thick - the patty was kind of undermined in it, so coughing up the $3 extra would probably be worth it to improve the meat to bread ratio. You could always take the cheaper/healthier route and just ask them for thinner sliced bread too, but I would rather have the big bread with more meat. The mushrooms were from the can - fresh sliced and sautéed to order would be much tastier. Double the steak in the sandwich, and I would say a side to the sandwich is not even necessary, as you will leave full as hell! Anyhow, if you're in Saginaw for a couple hours like I was and want to try the best local eats on a budget - there's no contest that Tony's Original Restaurant is your bet. It's a cozy, hometown diner with an appealing menu. While their famous Great Steak sandwich can be broken down into mediocre ingredients - the sum of its parts are greater as a whole. The "Intermission Deli" right next to it looks like it'd be a great 2nd choice though! Check it out! read more

You don't have to drive far to find a Tony's in Saginaw. They're everywhere. We wanted breakfast before we got the day started...even if that wasn't until 1130. We weren't feeling the normal place so a quick search on yelp showed that this place was right on the path on the way out of town. While you can park in front of the restaurant, there is also parking around back. Be mindful of what way your headed since this place is nestled between 2 one ways. This place is right next door to Napolitano's bakery and they sell some of their goods right by the register. You walk in and seat yourself and the server will come by with menus. I will say that because of how popular this place is, you need to plan. You can either call ahead and get takeout or know that you'll be sitting for a bit. A lady at the table next to us wanted to order an additional side of bacon when their food came out and the server had to warn them that there was a 30 min lead time on food. I ordered the basic meat, potatoes, eggs and toast. You can't split the meat down the middle, but you do get your normal healthy portions of breakfast. I grew up on this mid Michigan staple. Any time I am back in the area I make sure one of my stops is for a GIANT steak sandwich. I like them with pizza cheese and mushrooms like Tom. I also agree with tom on the chocolate shake, but if you could get a wop salad and fudge Sunday down next to sammy and shake without barfing... that's talent! Here's a good tip- order the sauce on the side. I used to get it regular, but if I was getting take out it was totally soggy by the time I got to my destination. This solves that. Had my first steak sandwich with grilled onions and mushrooms here decades ago. A brick of mystery meat topped old school Saginaw way, onions and mushrooms is the way to go. People nowadays may opt for it with cheese as well. Don't be mistaken, this is no "steak meat" sandwich. Rather it's a meatloaf of some sort. Not the greatest thing ever created, but a hometown favorite that has stood the test of time. A Tony's steak sandwich or their nachos are the only ways to go and never lightly. The Wop salad, to me, is what their steak sandwich is to most people: utterly irresistible. Anyway, I do not understand the bad reviews this place gets, but you can be the best and there are those that go for the Jackwess.
