Benefit Street is a nice little walk and The Shunned House is a sweet little surprise. What I like…read moreabout The Shunned House is that you would have NO CLUE that this house was significant amongst the others in the surrounding areas. The armory down the street stands out a lot more than the lil house that HPLovecraft wrote about. Still it's a great side trip that will only take seconds out of your day if you are in or around the colleges in the area. This is obviously a residence and they have since named the house after someone but you can see the wall that used to be used as the front of the house and the descriptions stand strong in Lovecraft's writing. No big deal but I liked being there and seeing it.

I was going to write about this curiousity, but I realized I couldn't do any better than what…read morebrought me in the first place: "The house was--and for that matter still is--of a kind to attract the attention of the curious. Originally a farm or semi-farm building, it followed the average New England colonial lines of the middle eighteenth century--the prosperous peaked-roof sort, with two stories and dormerless attic, and with the Georgian doorway and interior panelling dictated by the progress of taste at that time. It faced south, with one gable end buried to the lower windows in the eastward rising hill, and the other exposed to the foundations toward the street. Its construction, over a century and a half ago, had followed the grading and straightening of the road in that especial vicinity; for Benefit Street--at first called Back Street--was laid out as a lane winding amongst the graveyards of the first settlers, and straightened only when the removal of the bodies to the North Burial Ground made it decently possible to cut through the old family plots. "At the start, the western wall had lain some twenty feet up a precipitous lawn from the roadway; but a widening of the street at about the time of the Revolution sheared off most of the intervening space, exposing the foundations so that a brick basement wall had to be made, giving the deep cellar a street frontage with door and two windows above ground, close to the new line of public travel. When the sidewalk was laid out a century ago the last of the intervening space was removed; and Poe in his walks must have seen only a sheer ascent of dull grey brick flush with the sidewalk and surmounted at a height of ten feet by the antique shingled bulk of the house proper. "The farm-like grounds extended back very deeply up the hill, almost to Wheaton Street. The space south of the house, abutting on Benefit Street, was of course greatly above the existing sidewalk level, forming a terrace bounded by a high bank wall of damp, mossy stone pierced by a steep flight of narrow steps which led inward between canyon-like surfaces to the upper region of mangy lawn, rheumy brick walls, and neglected gardens whose dismantled cement urns, rusted kettles fallen from tripods of knotty sticks, and similar paraphernalia set off the weather-beaten front door with its broken fanlight, rotting Ionic pilasters, and wormy triangular pediment. "What I heard in my youth about the shunned house was merely that people died there in alarmingly great numbers. That, I was told, was why the original owners had moved out some twenty years after building the place. It was plainly unhealthy, perhaps because of the dampness and fungous growth in the cellar, the general sickish smell, the draughts of the hallways, or the quality of the well and pump water. These things were bad enough, and these were all that gained belief among the persons whom I knew. Only the notebooks of my antiquarian uncle, Dr. Elihu Whipple, revealed to me at length the darker, vaguer surmises which formed an undercurrent of folklore among old-time servants and humble folk; surmises which never travelled far, and which were largely forgotten when Providence grew to be a metropolis with a shifting modern population." I was asked to leave because i asked a simple question and the unprofessional employees of course stuck up for each other. I was humiliated in front of a whole waiting room because they said i got an attitude, I'm the patient at this point, I am the one in pain, my insurance and I are paying for this and now i am having a full blown panic attack while everyone is staring at me. Even the nurse on duty was rude, took out my iv while telling me how rude i am when she should have talked to me to have me stay. Since I was triaged they should have done a better job making sure I was ok instead of getting upset that i was upset, people need to learn how to be professional again. I am afraid for people who cant speak or understand, if this is the way they treat me what about them. Both DOH and Kent are negligent in patient care. They work together to make you feel that you are in the wrong and then they refuse to do an actual investigation.

After recertifying for one of the programs that I've been on for a few years now because I need it…read morefor my son. After recertifying for the year 2021, I received a letter over the weekend which was Saturday February 20, 2021. The letter stated that my benefits are ending as of March 1st of this year so in return I called and mailed an appeal form in doing so I found out from the department of Health call center people that a workman's comp claim from 2005 has now thrown out my benefits. They instructed me to incall the company that has the unemployment benefit being reported, and wish I did. The first company New Hampshire insurance company, looked up my maiden name my married name my social security number; there's no file for you for unemployment with us; but if you call her subcontractor Essex and talk with them. so I called them right after I get off the phone with the other the New Hampshire insurance company. Well that associate wasn't very nice for Mass six, I stated that the same information gave her my social security number mine married name my current name and there is a file for workman's comp, here's the juicy part; the count for the workman's comp claim has been closed since 2005. Yeah we cannot provide you with the letter stating that the case has been closed until you sign some more paperwork. so I go back and I call back the department of Health and human resources speak with them again this time I spoke with two different people at the same time told them exactly what I just stated that each insurance company the first one don't have a file for me the second insurance company does but it's been closed since 2005 and neither one of them understand why you guys are withholding my benefits. The department of Health and human services response; I am sorry there's nothing we can do for you we need you to provide the proof that you are not getting unemployment benefits we need you to correct our error not us we need you to correct it but meanwhile why you are running around correcting our era we are going to withhold your benefits, and also sit there and tell you to relax calm down it's going to work out just send us the information and soon as we get it we'll reopen your case and you'll be reinstated. so you're telling me an hour that has been caused by something out of my control and something that is so old from 2005, but yet you guys are going to sit there and hold me accountable for this because it's an arrow and now that's an error and I'm bringing it up that's an hour is incorrect I have to suffer the consequences of your era and you guys don't want to go and fix error on your behalf because it will mean you guys are admitting you guys were wrong but yet like always that's not the state of Rhode Island we're going to make you jump through all the hoops to fix this era we're going to make you get all stressed out and pray to God that you don't land in the hospital but other than that there's nothing we can do for you and just relax

They were about 100 of us just sitting around waiting. All of a sudden they called my number and said "juror 172! Please come to the front." Once I approached they said there's a three year time allowed before you can do jury duty and you were here 2 1/2 years ago. I then asked why they sent me the notice to appear??? The gentleman sitting at the desk said well it was a mistake, but it's your responsibility to keep track of when you were here last. Wow! I was then excused without compensation. Took a day out of work to perform my civil duty, only to be excused because of their lack of attention to detail. If I am ever asked to be a juror again, I am going to make every effort to get out of it.

Nothing on the news about problems with the building, either. (we'd had a big rainstorm the day before, with flooding in some places, and it's at the bottom of a hill). I took time off work for this, plus canceled/had to reschedule a medical appointment and a piano lesson. I was told they would call again on another occasion (no idea when that will be). They could call me again any time between now and next July, I'm still on the hook. I'm just hoping and praying it won't be during a very important trip I have in May of 2024, that I'll have to cancel last minute and lose my money. I hate to be stuck having to pay for travel insurance that will add hundreds more dollars to the trip, due to this uncertainty I'm now stuck living with. I wish I could get lucky and maybe they will forget about me, but I doubt it. They seem to forget that people have lives. I'm semiretired, but I'm not sitting home bored in a rocking chair, waiting for them to call, that's for sure!

I was gifted a preferred plate and needed to make a trip to transfer them to my vehicle. I may have been able to do this via the mail, but since I had a narrow timeframe, I opted to go in person. Reservations for the main location in Cranston generally book 2-3 weeks out. I made 2 appointments for the same day, one for the morning and the other for the afternoon in case I needed to gather additional information and didn't want to wait another 2-3 week for an appointment. One good thing about COVID is that it forced a restructuring of the DMV, which ended up being better for customers and employees, so many of the updates are still in place today. Step 1: make your reservation online for the day, time, and location you want to visit Step 2: arrive during your scheduled time Step 3: security will ask to see your confirmation before allowing you access to the building Step 4: wait in the check in line and hope that you have all of the forms and documents you need to get whatever you came for done Step 5: get called to the check in window (there are 4 of them) Show the employee behind the plexiglass your confirmation number, hand over your paperwork and forms for them to review and validate. If you have everything that you need, you receive a deli style ticket with a number on it and get to proceed to the upstairs waiting area. If you don't have all the paperwork and forms you need, you'll need to straighten that out before you go any further Step 6: wait in the second floor waiting area. The seats are so worn out that the faux leather is completely work off, leaving a spongy foam cushion to sit on. Even with an appointment, I waited 40 min for my number to be called Step 7: when your number is called, proceed to the numbered booth/window the automated system told you to enter and hand your paperwork over to the employee sitting behind that plexiglass. This person may or many not be friendly, but as long as they can take care of what you went to the DMV for, that doesn't matter. Pay your fee, collect your receipt, and leave.
