Warning: Do Not Buy from Starwest Botanicals, RAT POOP! I am extremely disappointed in both the product quality and the complete lack of customer care I received. I purchased milk thistle seeds from Starwest and discovered a RAT DROPPING in the bag! Unfortunately, I didn't notice it until after I had already poured the seeds into a blend with other herbs, resulting in over $300 in lost product. I immediately documented the contamination and sent Starwest the lot number and a photo of the dropping. Despite following up several times, their response was dismissive and uncaring. They asked for more photos and videos--when I had already explained there was only one dropping, which I scooped out and photographed. After that, I never heard back again. No accountability, no refund, no replacement, not even a genuine apology. On top of that, the seeds themselves were low grade--pale and poor in quality, not the dark, almost black color that fresh, high-quality milk thistle should be. This is not just a product issue--it's a serious health and safety concern combined with terrible customer service. Starwest failed me tremendously, and I can't in good conscience recommend them to anyone. Starwest Botanicals customer service is truly shocking. I placed an order one month ago that they couldn't see in their system. I called them and they said to re-place the order. Two orders end up being charged and shipped. After contacting them they said once both arrive I would just return one box. Instead on their end they somehow return box boxes to Starwest. They said i would have to replace the order again which of course there is no way I will do. one month later i have still not received the refund and int he last week no one answers me about it. Their quality control I noticed has gotten worse and I see a number of items sourced from China. I purchased their marshmallow root. It has so much mud in it! I had been drinking it for a week and noticed something odd in the bottom of the cup. MUD! I examined the dry root and much had mud still on the root as well as clumps in the mix. No wonder I've been feeling a bit sick. I've contacted them and waiting for a reply. read more

I have been shopping with Starwest Botanicals for more than a decade. Their herbs and spices are the freshest and most potent I have found. My body reacts poorly to most pharmaceuticals-so my doctors encourage me to use herbs. It started with the organic turmeric, then Devil's claw, lavender for my closets and drawers, lavender laundry sheets, cinnamon bark, etc. it is all good and fresh and potent. Last week I received an auto-generated letter in my mailbox, informing me that Starwest Botanicals' website was hacked, and the hackers were able to get every customer's credit card number and other information. I went through the process of going to my bank to cancel my card and get a temporary one to use in the meantime to survive and function with. I have been ordering tea from Starwest Botanicals for many months now, and loving the quality and prices of the tea -- and even though I was greatly concerned about my card information being compromised by their situation, I was still interested in ordering their products, but not through their website -- so I phoned them today to find out if they could process my order for me using my temporary bank card and was told flatly 'no'. I asked them for other alternatives, asking if it was possible to have them ship me the order with an invoice and I would gladly put a check in the mail, and was told 'no'. I then explained my situation that I did not have any other means of payment and this temporary debit card should work perfectly fine to order with --- since I'd already used it at Trader Joe's, Safeway, and several nearby cafe's and restaurants. The customer service rep on the phone then asked me "Well, I show two other card numbers in our system, couldn't you use one of these?" I was shocked. I asked her WHY if their website was just HACKED did they still keep customers' credit card numbers in their system?! She explained "Well, this is on our local system, there's no way they can access this information." I told her to immediately remove my information, and she then added "The customer is responsible to tell us after each transaction if they want their credit card number removed from our system-- otherwise we do keep this information on all of our computers." I was just blown away by this--- mostly considering their company's system was just compromised and all of the customer database/personal information was taken by the criminals -- and it could very well happen again. I asked to speak to a manager, who also began to argue with me and was quite rude. I went into the question again about other forms of payment, and she refused to compromise and offer me any solution. I again asked for her supervisor and was transferred to leave a message in the owner of the company's voicemail, which I did, telling her that I was going to proceed with a negative Yelp review, a negative review on Facebook, Twitter and to the 7 other friends who I referred to use their products (one of which is a wholesaler and makes very large bulk orders, and will no longer be using them after hearing about this from me today). Do not use Starwest Botanicals--- they follow BAD business practices and do not treat customers with any respect-- and most importantly -- they KEEP YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBERS and PERSONAL INFORMATION in their computers even after their system was hacked and customer's private information and credit card numbers stolen. They may have a great product line but believe me, there are plenty of other fish in the sea--- don't waste your time (or money) with them. read more

I don't recommend this place for anyone and especially not business owners unless they improve customer service. I have been asking for a tracking number since last week and come to find out, it was never placed. Oh I was so distressed to see negative feedback about this company because I have always had great experiences with them, I love their customer service, and their products have AMAZING quality.. like really! I love the herbs from this company, they are by far the most richest in flavor, in color, and in fragrance. I've taste tested herbs from all over... 10 chamomiles, 7 peppermints, 9 lavenders... etc... the list is long... and each time I'd say 9 times out of 10, Starwest's herb was the deepest in flavor, color and aroma hands down. They have really fast and on time shipping, great sales ladies, and a wonderful customer service attitude. I don't know why anyone would speak ill about this company... just because they had a credit card fraud incident doesn't mean they are terrible... in their defense... everybody who sells online has those problems happen... get real. and lady who the heck takes a debit card over the phone unless it acts like a credit card with the visa/mastercard logo on it, nobody takes debit cards... how unreasonable to expect them to do that... your crazy. I have been buying tea and spices for my restaurant from Starwest for 2 years. The product quality is exceptional. There has never been an error in filling an order and the turn around time is excellent. I am located on the east coast and tend to prefer quality local suppliers, but Starwest has earned my trust. As far as the credit card fraud issue, there have been no issues with the credit card I use with Starwest. Speaking from the point of view of a business owner with some knowledge of these issues, it seems apparent to me that the people who posted the scathing reviews have very little knowledge of how credit card security works! Products are ok. But my experience was not pleasant. I ordered some tea to be delivered to Toronto. The original order was $60, I ended up paying $71 for customs fee. This never happens when I buy something from Amazon.com, or ebay, etc. .. not sure what they are doing differently, or if it was their carrier .. but doesn't matter, they are not handling their international sales properly. I've been ordering from star west botanicals for years and not had any issues .l always get the ginseng root American powder . I placed an order about 10 days ago and received it pretty quickly like usual but this time there was an issue with the product itself. The ginseng was very clumpy and moist usually the product is dry like powdered sugar. Not sure if it was sent to me like that or was overheated during the process of shipping. Anyways looking at their return policy online looked like they took a lot of honor in their product. As I called today and talk to the receptionist who said I needed to speak with Adria who wasn't there she told me to call back which I did their customer service is basically leaving a message UHG nobody got back with me I called again talked with the receptionist Courtney who told me before she hung up on me to complain to Adria's machine. I thought I was going to have to order from amazon and wait forever for shipping. Starwest botanicals popped up on my google search, so I did some review reading and other research. The reviews were mixed, and I like to see things for myself anyway. I got the address and drive over. I was skeptical when I pulled up the warehouse, because it nobody was inside. So I called to make sure they were legit. They are!!!! The rep on the phone told me to come right in. The staff was upset super nice, they took my order right there. Shipping was fast and speaking with customer service was easy; however, my review is based on the fact that I find some of their policies to be quite deceptive. Due to California's Prop 65 they now have to start labeling their products with a warning saying, "This product contains a chemical known to the State of CA to cause cancer...etc." They do not clearly list this in the product description - so I was quite surprised after ordering to find this information. I called requesting a refund and customer service was understanding and tried to explain to me, "It's not a big deal". The rep actually said, "You get more lead exposure from eating a carrot". First off, they don't know the dosage I will be using, what I will be mixing it with that may change the efficacy, or my mode of exposure so it is OUTRAGEOUS that they could even say this!! I asked for the certificate of analysis to see what "chemicals" it had in it, but they couldn't supply that information. So, I said I'd like to process the return. Then, they won't even pay for return shipping. There is NO WAY I would have ordered these products had they been upfront with this information. I could understand not paying shipping if I did not like the product or some other reason that was my fault. But this product was not as described and shipping should therefore be on their tab not mine. Not only were they not forthright with this information, but I asked, if I decide to order from your company again will I have to inquire about every product beforehand to see if it has the health concern label and the response was yes.
